I was at the sportbook at the Cosmopolitan yesterday and placed some wagers. The clerk gave me some drink coupons. When the cocktail waitress stopped by, I asked for a margarita. She said the coupons weren't good for any mixed drinks. Only beer, juices, sodas, and an alcohol with water or soda (i.e. Scotch and soda). Man, talk about nickel and diming people. What's next? A surcharge for a room key?!

And they leave the gambling for last. Would love to see a place open with good odds, cheap food and comped rooms. It would be interesting to see how packed the place would be.

Have you seen a hotel bill now compared to the 50's.

1950's:

Room: $10.00
Tax: $1.00
Total: $11.00

You can watch an old movie and it will literally show that in a movie. Look at a receipt now from a hotel.... and it's gone 10 line items. 10 line items for fucking what? It's absurd.

it is important to know that vegas is dominated by MBAs and corporate types.
their concern is mainly for their bottom line with very little regard to the
customer experience unless that cost is minimal or determined to be
cost effective. every department now is supposed to be revenue generating
as compared to the attitude of decades ago where the casino's purpose
was to give value to the player with the hope of enticing them to gamble
there and with them. once competition started in the casino industry along
with different alternative gambling options, the exclusivity of vegas and to
a lesser extent AC, was weakened. decades ago, junkets bringing in large
numbers of well heeled crazed gamblers were quite common and lucrative.
now the casinos must find different ways to replace that revenue and differentiate
themselves from the plethora of competitors fighting for every gambling
dollar. certainly things were better for the player decades ago, but one's
gambling options were quite limited. one had to go to the race track to
bet a horse (unless one had a bookie). it was a big deal 50 years ago when
new Hampshire got a lottery. playing poker or betting sports was either
done in vegas or in/with a private game or with a private individual.
but has options for the gambler has increased, the casinos have been
forced to evolve to remain competitive and alive. we are paying
that price for their survival and ability to thrive.

Vegas is overcharging for many things these days..eventually it will come back to haunt them as wagering will soon be in all states. The luster of Vegas was cool in the past but with these add on charges it will hurt business going forward.

Eventually they will piss enough people off with multiple issues people will stay away from certain properties or stay home and go to local or indian based casinos. Personally I find myself rarely going to the strip properties for any reason unless i'm visiting with friends/family or going to a show.

My Grandfather was a Building Contractor who did Sub-contract work in Vegas in the 50's and 60's. My dad starter wagering in Vegas in the mid 60's. I have been going there since I was a little girl and my parents took me to the Circus Circus to win prizes in the kids arcade. All of that is gone now. My dad only goes to Vegas when it is necessary for sports book reasons. Once California legalizes sports wagering, we will not go back to Vegas.

Howard Hughes was the beginning of the end of the Vegas I grew up to love. Now all the corporations that own the hotels work 24/7 to try and figure out ways of screwing the public out of their money without having to depend on a casino. The yuppies who go to Vegas now, obviously do not have a clue. They will spend all that they have just to say that they were there. Vegas is dead. What ever took it's place is just terrible.

This is not new news. Throw in meters on video poker at the bar to get a drink, 3:2 blackjack, discontinuation of shuttle service, etc, etc. The big outcry used to be resort fees...see how long it took in this thread to bring that up?

On the other hand, Wynn just discontinued their parking fees probably because of the money they save from not paying off Steve Wynn's happy endings. I live in Vegas and we only visit the strip when friends are in town.

That's Cantor for you. You must've bet thousands, they're about the stingiest of all the books for drink tickets.

Vegas was better when the mob was running things

A whole lot better. Prices were much, much, lower; they treated you much better, and there was little or no crime. Even in the 70's I was getting into shows for free, etc. Yep, organized crime's were it's at.
