STAMFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut man who was assaulted by three juveniles while at work has been sentenced to serve time in jail for stabbing an attacker.

The Connecticut Post reports 21-year-old Jeffrey Sumpter of Bridgeport was sentenced at a Stamford courthouse on Monday to 18 months in jail.

Sumpter was working at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Norwalk last October when he was jumped by three males. After being assaulted, Sumpter stabbed one of them in the leg.

During the hearing, he said he was defending himself.

Judge John Blawie told Sumpter that he believed his version of events, but had to follow the letter of the law. He was convicted of felony first-degree assault.

Where's Charles Bronson when you need him.......you get attacked, then you fight back & you pay the price. If its true, & he was attacked by these 3 men, then the law doesn't make sense if you get in trouble for fighting back.

Have to review the actual case. With all media you get a snippet... and then jump to a reaction.

They are playing off your sense of justice... and then you run with that emotion. Then a firestorm starts.

Ie, Trayvon. Put pictures of him as a little kid and that he was on his way to collidge to become an astronaut in newly discovered galaxies.... and then you riot.

Although I agree with the initial reaction, I'd have to investigate further. Also, this is California Law 101. Be a citizen, get shafted. Be an illegal, get free licenses, shit, no laws enforced, free ride in the country. Be an illegal in another country, get a free ride in jail... and a shit jail.

Beating happened inside, he followed them outside.

If guy had a real attorney, could have cast some doubt on whether he came outside or was dragged outside/forced outside somehow. Could have given the judge an out.

Judge's hands were tied by the stupid liberal law.

you guys act like judges can ignore clearly defined statutes with no consequence

these are called activist judges, and they are usually liberal cunts who aren't really judges. The judge's job is to enforce the law... the law sucks, so the ruling sucks.

I can't imagine that there's a law that says when you stab somebody in self defense it's a crime

Maybe the knife he was carrying was illegal, but 18 months seems harsh for that

We need more facts. Something isn't right. However, the Judge should have done everything possible to avoid this harsh penalty, unless he is a liberal coward.

Connecticut does not have a stand-your-ground law, but instead requires an individual to retreat when able to do so. Under state law, the use of deadly force that might otherwise have been justifiable is not warranted if someone “knows that he can avoid the necessity of using such force with complete safety...by retreating...” (CGS § 53a-19(b)); State v. Garrison, 203 Conn. 466, 472, (1987)). The state's Castle Doctrine law is an exception to this requirement to retreat. In 2007, a bill was introduced to enact stand-your-ground legislation, but did not pass the Judiciary Committee.

Kid and the kid's lawyer fucked themselves by admitting he ran after them outside it sounds like. Or maybe a video showed it. I don't know, but you can't chase your attackers in Connecticut and he did.

(1) "retreat when able to do so", so we're assuming the victim could have run

(2) citing the "use of deadly force", I'm going to suggest that a stab to the leg is not that. I guess that law is saying you should run and not kill somebody

It's obvious there's a lot of room for subjectivity in your citation. I'm guessing the defense attorney sucked. And, in the absence of other evidence or history, putting this guy in jail is a crime

Sorry but this law is horrible. Liberalism is a mental disease. This guy would have gotten a trophy in Florida for doing this. Homos in Connecticut that allow this crap to remain on the books. When I worked as a law school intern for the Miami Dade state attorney we had a case where a security guard shot a man who pulled a bb gun on him. My job was to find case law that supported self defense. The guy walked and the perpetrator was dead.

"the dude defended himself" was a reference to the fact that he did NOT have an attorney.

After rereading my post, I realize that comment had a double meaning in this thread :)
