July 8th, and asking for week one best picks...crazy but maybe not .

Name your BEST two picks against the spread for week one at this early date.

Ok, I'll go. Texas hammers Maryland and Alabama hammers Louisville.

Assuming that you are talking about teams to cover the spread, mine are these. Washington over Auburn. Washinigton wears down Auburn in the 2nd half. I would take Army +14 over Duke that they are giving at C.G. Tech shops. I am sure this will change many times before the games start, which is why I have not gone down on any of these games as of yet.

Alabama opened at 28.5 and has been bet down to -25 / -25.5 against Louisville.
Saban has proven to be really good in these opening games neutral site games.

Texas opened at 10.5 and has remained steady at -10 to -10.5 vs. Maryland.
After being embarrassed at home by the Terps last year...they will be ready.

Louisville could easily have the worst defense in the nation. Only two starters return, and they are both Sophs. The biggest problem Saban is going to have is keeping his team injury free.

There is something about Texas that has me seeing Red Flags. I do not know if it is the general toughness of that team or what, but Texas has a habit of making things harder on themselves than necessary. Last season three of their games went into OT and they lost two of those. I will pass for now.

Texas had ZERO help from the offense last year. At times, the offense fielded a true freshman
quarterback, a true freshman running back, a true freshman right tackle and a true freshman
tight end. The offense sucked on the way to a 7-6 season. For a bettor they were 9-4 against
the spread.

This team scares me but the Horns will beat the hell out of Maryland opening week.

A Line Alert. Texas is now up to -11 in many shops in Vegas. Maryland +11 is worth thinking about, especially if you think the line will fall back to its -9 opening. 10 is a pretty good middle.

I’ve been eyeing up northwestern +3 against Purdue
That could be a very interesting game between two middle-of-the-road teams. Northwestern needs QB Thorson to return healthy. He is officially listed as "questionable" against Purdue. Purdue needs to find a QB and replace 8 starters on defense. Was Purdue a "Fluke" last season?
