I have an idea about analytics and bunting and shit but seriously...in the bottom of the 16th, the dbacks lead off with a double down by a run. Up steps Jeremy Lamb who blows and is 0-7. Instead of bunting him over and letting someone have a chance to score him with a sac fly or whatever (incidentally the next batter did fly out), fucko Lamb strikes out on 3 pitches and essentially ends the game. Wtf. Are managers just idiots now? Is small ball completely done? Or are these millionaire ego maniacs that can’t hit worth shit anyway too cocky to bunt? I would love to see how many games are lost with this bullshit strategy. Anyway...

I was discussing this today with a buddy of mine.

I’m old school baseball, grew up in 70s. Move the runner over, hit to right side or bunt. Manufacture runs.

Today it’s all about stats, get your HRs and RBIs. Get paid. With the juiced ball HRs are much easier to come by too. I was watching Cubs today, B10 runner on 2nd no outs. Full count and the dude just swings out of his ass and whiffs. Nobody shortens up, nobody just tries to put it in play. Just swing hard regardless of situation.

It’s a different era, plsyers want stats. Situational baseball rarely applies.

You can't blame the players. The manager decides if he swings away or bunts.
The player either gets a bunt down or he doesn't. But he certainly isn't there to pad his stats at that point.

it will matter in october and thats why it sucks to have a manager that doesnt get it. being able to get runs with bunts and sac flys are so important but they are essentially ignored during the regular season. i always liked the managers that understood small ball and always fade the ones that cant once we get to october.

Can’t see running out pitchers when , night before was 20 run win. Reminds me of all star game years ago ended up a tie.Commisioner had to make descion that night. That game they should let position players pitch.Since that game don’t count. Kind glad they loss though.I have big bet with Under Seige AZ homer. My DODGERS & HIS AZ best record. I gave him 3-1 odds for $100. Ok good luck to you all beat the books , not each other.

It has been mentioned above already, and people are correct it is a different game. With that stated Jake Lamb has not one sacrifice bunt in playing 3.5 years in the Majors. Ridiculous, yes. Reality, yes. For all we know the kid has not been asked to even try a sacrifice since he 10 years old. He may not even know what a sacrifice is and surely would not recognize the sign from the third base coach.

I was watching the game live. They had ZERO pitchers in the bullpen left. Like I said, they could have burned another starter but they already did that with Godley.

Its not just about laying down a bunt.

Its about situational hitting. Hit the ball to the right side, shorten up with 2 strikes and try to make contact. Few players care about any of that stuff. I can absolutely blame the player for this.
