Seems to be a lot of talk around here lately about living longer, so I decided to do a little reading on the topic, and here are many of the characteristics practiced or found in the demographics of people that live longer.

1) Diet, avoiding processed foods. Many of them eat a mostly plant based diet, although none of them can be called vegan or vegetarians. None of them eat processed foods, although it's literally impossible for everyone to practice this in western civilizations. Some of them eat mostly fish, like Eskimo tribes. Other's eat a lot of red meat, like African tribes.

2) Tranquility, they all live tranquil and stress free lives. They stay young at heart (they obviously avoid gambling and politics)

3) Exercise, they don't have to go out of their way to exercise, it's part of their daily lives from the day they were born. Stated differently, they move more

4) Obesity, because they avoid processed foods and benefit from continuous physical activity, they're not obese.

5) They drink natural juices and water, unprocessed and no chemicals. They don't consume alcohol

6) Environment, they live in remote areas of the world. Untouched by pollution and chemicals

If you want to have a life expectancy of 100 to 140 years, you'll need to move to remote areas like Northern Alaska / Siberia, or join some East African tribe in Tanzania, or maybe move to the Himalayas where they're giving birth at age 80.

But if you prefer to live in the States, furgetaboutit. Just do your best to avoid excesses and MOVE MORE

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Zone

There's a goody in there if you get to the link fast enough.

The people inhabiting Blue Zones share common lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their longevity. The Venn diagram at the right highlights the following six shared characteristics among the people of Okinawa, Sardinia, and Loma Linda Blue Zones:[SUP][11][/SUP]

  • Family – put ahead of other concerns
  • Less smoking
  • Semi-vegetarianism – the majority of food consumed is derived from plants
  • Constant moderate physical activity – an inseparable part of life
  • Social engagement – people of all ages are socially active and integrated into their communities
  • Legumes – commonly consumed
In his book, Buettner provides a list of nine lessons, covering the lifestyle of blue zones people:[SUP][12][/SUP]

  1. Moderate, regular physical activity.
  2. Life purpose.
  3. Stress reduction.
  4. Moderate caloric intake.
  5. Plant-based diet.
  6. Moderate alcohol intake, especially wine.
  7. Engagement in spirituality or religion.
  8. Engagement in family life.
  9. Engagement in social life.
  10. Betting on football every single Sunday for 10 hours straight. This includes fantasy teams, straight bets, survivor pools and futures/win totals.

From the link provided

Look at the common characteristics

We tend to underestimate the importance of "family" or "life's purpose" or "tranquility", the stuff I tend to value more

Yawn......slow morning, eh, Willie

Raining, won't do any gardening or landscaping in the rain, can't use the pool or work on my Guinea tan, waiting for the World Cup and then an afternoon fantasy baseball midseason party

Willie, where are we betting the over/under on who dies this year?

I've got Cincinatti Bengals' coach death by brain explosion as they go for 40 losses in a row. Odds are good.

My Dad will be 81 in 12 days. Looks and feels great. He's still very active playing golf 3 times a week. My Mom is 77 doing great has arthritis though.

I play golf with a number of guys in their 80’s and most of them play almost every day. I know one guy who turned 88 this year and he plays at least 9 holes every day. He used to be an Indiana State Trooper and you would think he is about 75 if you saw him. I asked him once what his secret was and he said playing golf but mainly just staying active. That seems to be the common ingredient for most.

I played golf with a guy in his 80's. Other two guys were in their 70's. The guy in his 80's died on the 15th hole. The guys in their 70's were serious (like myself) so we left him dead on the 15th and finish the round.

After the 18th we walked back to the 15th and called it in.
