The San Antonio Spurs have agreed to trade Kawhi Leonard and Danny Greento the Toronto Raptors for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first-round pick, league sources tell ESPN.

Toronto's first-round pick to San Antonio is a protected 1-20 selection. After one year, it becomes two second-round picks.

A trade call with the teams and the NBA league office is scheduled to begin shortly.

Toronto and San Antonio have been talking about the trade for two weeks, and several incarnations of packages have been discussed, league sources said. Sources close to DeRozan told ESPN's Chris Haynes that DeRozan met with Toronto officials in Las Vegas during summer league and believed that he would not be traded.

In a story posted on his Instagram page Wednesday morning, DeRozan wrote, "Be told one thing & the outcome another. Can't trust em. Ain't no loyalty in this game. Sell you out quick for a little bit of nothing... Soon you'll understand... Don't disturb..."

Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri is taking a significant risk in pursuing the trade. Ujiri will make the deal with a determination that he can sell Leonard on re-signing with the Raptors next summer in free agency, sources said. Toronto would be able to offer Leonard a five-year, $190 million contract next summer. If Leonard left the Raptors, he could sign a four-year, $141 million deal with a team with the available salary-cap space.

Leonard has been clear that he plans to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency.

DeRozan has three years and $83 million left on his contract, including an early-termination option for the 2020-21 season.

ESPN's Chris Haynes contributed to this story.

When he requested his trade, I said in that thread that I thought good chance he would be dealt in 1-3 weeks. This was June 15th or so.

He was dealt 5 weeks later instead, they just waited way too long. Once the Lakers lost out on George and didn't wanna purge their young assets to get a guy that there is a decent chance they can get for nothing in a year, they bowed out. Then other teams didn't want to give much because they didn't know if he would re-sign. So now they had to give him to Toronto for pennies on the dollar.

Even if he might leave after 1 year, pretty big win for the Raps to swap Derozan for him. They definitely got a chance to compete for the finals now and then who knows, maybe he enjoys the city and stays.

Raptors didn't give up OG Anunoby or any unprotected future picks.

Getting taxed as an athlete there is similar to CA/NY I believe. Obviously guys will make that trade-off to play in those cities, but Toronto not as much.

Raptors have thousands of people outside the stadiums for playoff games, perhaps being the best player in franchise history if he can return to his previous levels of play would allow him to sell quite a bit of sneakers there though. It is a big market.

It'll be interesting to see him out of the Spurs system. He has some weaknesses in regards to playmaking/court vision that could make it harder for him to carry an offense. Their system really catered to his game. But his last year there, he made a big leap and we were in the midst of seeing how good he was before the injury vs GS.

Lowry/OG/Kawhi/Siakam/Ibaka is gonna be a sick defensive lineup.

I think it was more about Canada's unfavorable exchange rate back in the day, and those issues have returned after leveling out

As for income tax obligations, I believe they will increase for him if he's a resident of TX. As such, he pays no state income tax for his home games (1/2 of his income) . If his home games are in Canada or CA, that changes

I suppose that is 1 way to look at it but I think the Raps clearly made a great trade. They've had a good team for years, drafted well, found undervalued assets and competed but they just simply don't have the high end talent at the top of the roster to compete with the best teams in the league. Kawhi healthy is that high end blue chip talent. Maybe he won't make it back from injury, maybe he'll leave in 11 months but it is certainly worth the gamble.

Maybe he crushes it like he did in SA and then chooses to stay because he realizes the market is ripe for a big star, maybe he likes the city, his teammates, the fans, Masai Ujiri who is 1 of the best GM's in the league. It's a dog to happen but 1yr ago nobody thought George would stay in OKC and he did.

And if the worst case scenario happens and he isn't himself or bolts, then they just lost Derozan. He's a good player but he is getting older and at 29m a year, you can replace him in FA as that isn't the best contract. Not like losing him is devastating or anything.

$ 190,000,000 vs $ 141,000,000

1 day later and I actually like what the Raptors did....

Derozan is scheduled to make 27mil per year for the next 3 years? Is he worth 27 mil per year?

Raptors have 1 year to convince Kawhi to stay in Toronto (where he can make max money)

If Kawhi leaves in summer of 2019, at least they got Derozan's contract (will have 2 years remaining at 54 mil) off the books for a player who isnt worth the $$

In a league that spends 3.5 billion dollars this year on about 350 players, he's absolutely worth 27 million to someone. He can score and even improved as a playmaker last year. The Spurs aren't exactly known for being dumb and they think he's worth it.

But if you're paying him that, it would probably be tough to build a true contender as he doesn't really profile as a guy that can fit into an elite team. He's not that good defensively and can't really shoot from outside even though he has improved a little. So he mostly profiles as someone that just needs the ball a lot, and any really, really good team isn't going to give him the ball as much as he needs. Toronto was likely his ideal fit unless he can possibly reinvent his game in SA. We'll see.

Understood that 27 million is not a crazy number in a league that spends 3.5 billion dollars.

I'm talking about 27 million on a salary cap that is a projected 101 million for 2019. Is Derozan worth more than 25% of your cap?? If u think he is, then fine. If u dont think he is, then Toronto did well by getting rid of his contract

25% cap is not static as you can go over the cap a good amount before even hitting the luxury tax.

But yes in a 30 team league, he is worth that to someone as of today. The Raptors just won 51-56-59 games the last 3 years with him as their leading scorer and ran into LeBron every single time.
