Preview: Cardinals at Cubs
Gracenote
Jul 18, 2018

The Chicago Cubs hope three days off didn’t upend the momentum they had established before the All-Star break as they prepare to begin a five-game series against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. The Cardinals, on the other hand, hope the second half brings a fresh start.

The Cubs won 12 of their last 15 before the break, going from 2 1/2 games behind Milwaukee in the National League Central to a 2 1/2-game division lead. St. Louis won its first-half finale - its first game under interim manager Mike Shildt - but begins the second half at a crossroads. The Cardinals are 48-46 and 7 1/2 games behind the Cubs, and this week’s series could go a long way toward determining whether they are buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. St. Louis has won five of eight meetings this season, but the teams have split two games at Wrigley Field.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (6-5, 3.08 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (6-8, 3.92)

Martinez had won three straight starts, posting quality starts in all three, before losing to Cincinnati in his last outing of the first half. The 26-year-old Dominican allowed three runs over five innings in suffering his first loss at home since May 8. Martinez is 4-4 with a 4.58 ERA in 25 games (15 starts) against the Cubs, including a no-decision June 16 in which he gave up three runs over five frames.

Hendricks had a bumpy first half as he battled his fastball command, but he also suffered from a lack of run support. The Cubs scored a single run in eight of the 28-year-old’s 19 starts. Hendricks is 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 11 starts against the Cardinals, including a win June 16 in St. Louis.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs activated RHP Carl Edwards Jr. from paternity leave on Tuesday and expect to have CF Albert Almora Jr. back Thursday.

2. St. Louis SS Yairo Munoz is 8-for-24 with two homers and seven RBIs during a six-game hitting streak.

3. Chicago RF Jason Heyward (8-for-23) and 2B Javier Baez (7-for-24) are both riding five-game hitting streaks entering the second half.

CFL | Saskatchewan vs Hamilton
Play on: OVER 51 -109

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach CFL Game #371 Thursday Free Pick OVER the total in Hamilton Tigercats vs Saskatchewan Roughriders @ 7:30 ET - Two weeks ago the match-up between these teams in Saskatchewan stayed well under the total but the over is 7-2 in Hamilton's games between Games 5 and 9 the past two seasons. Also, despite that under, the Roughriders are still 6-3 to the over in their last 9 July games. In other words, this is a point in a season in which both of these teams have trended strongly toward high-scoring games. Also, as a road dog of 10.5 to 14 points, Saskatchewan is a long-term 15-8 to the over. Overall, look for the over to improve to 4-0 the last 4 times the Riders have been a double digit dog. In their game two weeks ago the Ti-cats somehow managed only 13 points despite 25 first downs in the game plus 322 passing yards in the game. You know they're going to be extra hungry at home after the way that one played out but the Roughriders have averaged 27.3 points per game in their last 3 meetings with the Tigercats. Considering that as well as the double digit line here one can see why it would not be a big surprise to see this game total reach into the 60s on Thursday! Free Pick OVER the total in Hamilton

CARLOS MARTINEZ (R) vs. KYLE HENDRICKS (R)

Hendricks after some surprising early season struggles has pitched well of late and has started to find himself including in his last outing when he allowed a pair of runs and five hits in five innings in an 11-6 victory over the San Diego Padres."That's the Kyle we know and love," Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters after Hendricks' gem in San Francisco. With Hendricks in top form and well rested Im betting the Cubs have an edge over a St.Louis cards group with a 20-43 record in their last 63 games following time off.

Cardinals are also just 1-5 in their starters Martinezs last 6 starts during game 1 of a series.Cardinals are 0-4 in Martinezs last 4 starts vs. National League Central.Cubs are 6-1 in their last 7 home games vs. a right-handed starter

Cubs are 12-3 in their last 15 overall.

Cubs are 5-0 in Hendricks' last 5 starts vs. Cardinals.
