Report: Aaron Donald won’t ‘play another down’ without new contract

All offseason, the Los Angeles Rams have downplayed the ongoing contract dispute with Aaron Donald. Les Snead has said repeatedly that they're working to get a deal done and that none of the contracts they doled out the past five months have had any impact on Donald's situation.
Well, it sounds like it's officially time to worry.
According to Adam Schefter, some around the league believe Donald will hold out as long as he doesn't have a new deal. In other words, he's willing to sit out the entire season, regardless of the fines he'll face.

There is a belief from some around the league that, no matter the fines or the effect on his free agency, Aaron Donald will not play another down on his existing contract. In other words, his holdout is likely to last until a new deal comes along.

This is pretty clearly bad news for the Rams if Schefter's report is true. Donald was willing to miss Week 1 last season, so imagine how he feels this year after seeing Brandin Cooks, Todd Gurley and Ndamukong Suh get paid.</twitterwidget>Donald has already begun his holdout after he didn't report to training camp by Wednesday's deadline, most likely remaining back home in Pittsburgh. One would think he'll report by Aug. 7, which is the last day for him to avoid restricted free agency in 2019, but it sounds like that date doesn't matter, either.

On #Rams DT Aaron Donald: If he doesn’t report by Aug 7, he doesn’t get an accrued season for free agency and he’d be restricted in 2019. I’m told that date is not considered relevant by those involved — in part because they may just franchise him, anyway. This should be lengthy.

</twitterwidget>Needless to say, he believes he's worth more than the $6.9 million salary he'll earn this season.

So he is under contract. He just doesn't want to honour the contract he signed.

Aaron Donald shines the brightest on the 10-1 Los Angeles Rams.
Since debuting as an NFL player in 2014, Aaron Donald has been nothing short of a beast. Think about it: he won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award by posting 9 sacks, then followed that up with an 11-sack campaign, and a string of All-Pro designations leading into this year. You could argue, he's never once regressed throughout his career. The record for the richest contract in NFL history by a "Defensive Player" was his until it was eclipsed by Khalil Mack this season. Life is undeniably good for Aaron Donald.
After securing his mega-deal in the offseason, Donald celebrated by purchasing what is quite possibly the most ostentatious piece of jewelry in circulation, at least within the NFL. TMZ has obtained visuals of Donald's $250,000 (appraisal) 14 karats diamond-encrusted chain, a small expenditure if you consider the magnitude of the aforementioned $135 million deal he signed in August.
TMZ has learned that Donald's chain took 2 months to complete. Although the chain is being appraised at $250,000 there's a chance he received a coupon discount on the piece, reports indicate it was purchased for an "undisclosed amount."
For what it's worth, Aaron Donald is a special player on a team that could be on the cusp of a dynastic run, if they can keep all their players signed under the NFL salary cap. The Los Angeles Rams currently sit in 1st position in the NFC West with a stellar 10-1 record.
