There are some well-known names amongst the hordes of operators in the British Isles contending for a foothold in the new legal sportsbook scene in the USA. One of these, it turns out, is the fantasy sports provider FanDuel, which is now majority-owned by Irish betting firm Paddy Power (with an option to fully own over the coming five years) and who have a major presence in the UK and run numerous betting shops in both countries.
The partnership with Paddy Power was struck following the announcement of the Supreme Court’s decision on sports betting in the USA and is the biggest such deal that we’ve yet seen from a European firm.
<strike></strike>FanDuel has announced that it hopes to set up an online casino and sports betting service in New Jersey and to launch it in time for punters to bet on NFL games, which start September 6. The company already has a partnership in place with the Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City, which should help them obtain the required license. Technology for the new services is being provided by International Game Technology (IGT) and GAN.
GAN’s Chief Executive Officer, Dermot Smurfit, has both a fantastic name and a no-nonsense approach to soundbites. He told press in the wake of the announcement, “Online sports betting go-live preparations for FanDuel are well advanced, and we remain confident in launching integrated sports betting alongside our existing internet casino later this year.”.
FanDuel will have some stiff competition, with numerous platforms set to launch around New Jersey, many tied to land-based casinos. The Borgata and Ocean Resort both already have their offerings up and running, Hard Rock and Caesars are hot on their heels, and over $16 million was made in initial investments in the space of two weeks once the floor opened in June<strike></strike>
