Looks like Urban Meyer has some "splane-ing" to do. He said at Big Ten Media Days that he had absolutley no knowledge of the 2015 Zach Smith abusing his wife incident or reports. Now a story comes out that Smith's wife has revealed texts that Shelly Meyer, wife of Urban, knew of the incident and texted she was going to tell Urban. How could he not have known?
Really think there much more here than meets the eye.

Need to keep an eye on this one!

It is hard to believe that Urban could be such a dumb arse in this day and age. Then again, we are talking Ohio State here. The same Ohio State that Woody Hays and Jim Tressel coached at. My guess is that Meyer survives the year and then comes up with another "Florida" type excuse and retires.

Ohio State belongs in the SEC, where all the other gypsies, tramps and thieves hang.

Things just keep getting worse and worse for Ohio State. It is getting more and more difficult to believe that Meyer did not know about this guy, especially since he knew about the guy's past history of spousal abuse back in 2009. Both Meyer and Ohio State have a long history of turning their backs on obvious illegal activities. Meyer's history at Florida is well documented. Recently, Ohio State has Maurice Clarette and Jim Tressell incidents that they tried to sweep under the carpet. What I do not understand is how their AD, Gene Smith, has not been fired yet.

The entire truth will probably never come out in this matter, but I do not see how Ohio State can keep Meyer employed. The backlash will be huge. The Big 10 will take another direct hit, something they do not need after the Penn State fiasaco. Then there is the price Ohio State will pay when it comes to potential playoffs. Assume that Alabama and Clemson both run the table. If Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Washington all finish with 12-1 records and win their Conference Championships, only two can go to the playoffs. If Meyer is still coaching at Ohio State, guess who the odd man out will be.

The cost to Ohio State and the Big 10 is way too high to keep Meyer. I thought he could B.S. his way through this season and then retire, but this incident is moving faster than a California Wildfire. Ohio State loses a lot of talent this season. They are not the "Lock" that they used to be in the Big 10 East, especially with games against Penn State and Michigan State on the road. Everyone is jumping on the Anti-Meyer band wagon. I do not see how he survives. If Ohio State is going to make a move, now is the time to do it.

There are certain elements in our society who have been trying to undermine "big time" college football for decades and when they see an opening such as the ambiguous allegations involving Urban Meyer they can't believe their good luck....College football is fundamentally sound, it's the politics of correctness that surrounds football and most high profile athletics (the envious and the haters) that keep attacking. All this might be just the beginning...........Sad indeed.

Sad? Quite possibly. But what IS a fact is that this is the way things are going to be, like it or not. Is there enough evidence to convict Meyer in a court of law? Not even close. Did he know about this problem? Oh hell yes. If you think he did not know, then I have beach front property in Kansas to sell you. Just look at his record at Florida. Unfortunately for Meyer, this is NOT a court of law. This is all about public perception, and he fails that test miserably. Notice that no one is questioning the lady's story. Even though I am a lady, I dislike all of this political correctness as much as the next person, but the fact is that this is the way things are. By this time next week, Meyer will be convicted in the court of public perception and that is the killer. What I do not understand is why Meyer tried to bury this. One of the dumbest moves he has ever made.

I can't agree with you on this one, nor the thread title. This was ONE reporter that broke this story on facebook of all places. Meyer stood up at B10 media days and said it was made up. So, like anybody that takes any pride in their work and sees somebody calling them a liar, the reporter got on a plane and dug deeper. This is all on Meyer. He could have said a million things on that podium in Chicago, and this all may have blown over. He could have said he was mentoring the guy or made a mistake and should have canned him a long time ago, anything other than it was a made up story. His comments are troubling.

I agree that Meyer blew it in Chicago. Big Time.

But I look at this, and listen, and I hear a (ex)wife say; I called my husband's bosses wife for help. I wanted her to tell my husband's boss. Now if your wife gets abused by you why would she call your boss? TO GET REVENGE. TO GET YOU FIRED. She did call police, no charges, no arrests. Hmmmm, why??? Why didn't the police arrest him???
MORE TO THIS STORY THAN MEETS THE EYE.

Oh look, she has text messages from three years ago. How many people keep text messages for three years?? I don't.

I wrote that thread title before the news broke that she said he busted her car window, came home drunk with a woman coworker who was to spend the night. Swung at her with golf clubs, etc.

Having Ohio State University investigate this is like the fox guarding the hen house. Should be independent investigating. Let's here both sides before convicting.

Just read the Powell police records story from Cleveland.com. One of the records was a report to police from Courtney Smith that neighbors say they saw Zach Smith peeking in her windows and vehicle at 1am.

This is the report that either gives Courtney Smith credibility or takes it away.
Who are the neighbors and what do they say? Did they actually see Zach peeking in windows? Why didn't they call police? Some reporter needs to get their story now!
IF, they say yes, we saw him and we notified Courtney, then I say I believe her and he is guilty along with Meyer. If this guy is window peeking in the middle of the night he has a problem!
IF, the neighbors can't be found, or say no, we saw nothing of the sort, Courtney's credibility is gone because she obviously would have lied.

Right now I'm on the fence. On one side Meyer could have swept this under the rug OR Meyer and other coaches knew she was a liar and lacked any credibility. Which is it?

He should have been convicted years ago when he started pulling this caca at Florida. Take it from someone who has investigated cases with this same theme. She was totally dependent upon him, until the "Me Too" movement and others came to surface. Now she knows what she will get, which is half of what he is worth for the rest of his life. I see it many times when the cases I am working on involve this. Ohio State should be put on probation for 5 years and their AD, who is as dirty as Meyer is, should be forced to resign. We are talking the same AD that tried to cover for Jim Tressell, another Ohio State HC who was crooked. Move over Penn State, you have company.

You come across as a guy that believes she made this story up.

In 2009 when the first assault happened, Meyer and his wife helped counsel the family personally. That's a fact, not made up. Why would they do that if it was a made up story?

The journalist, Brett McMurphy, told Clay Travis today he has so much evidence from Courtney it would've taken years for her to come up with this evidence and make this up.

He beat his wife.

I'm not ready to say she made it up. No doubt something happened in 2009. Her story is he brought home a female coworker and he was drunk. She drove the coworker home and when see got back they had a fight and he assaulted her. Need to hear his story.
She made police reports that a black SUV was following her. She made police reports that neighbors saw him peeking in her windows. These can be made up. He denies it all. His lawyer says we are not talking until court.

I would want to hear third party testimony so I could know who to believe.

What bothers me is she has called police and he was not arrested. Maybe because he was OSU coach? Maybe because of lack of evidence.
What also bothers me is she calls his bosses wife and says yes, tell his boss. This tells me she wants him fired. Now Pooh, if she is getting half of what he is worth, how much is he worth unemployed? Which is where she put him. She claims he was draining her financially. Maybe she already has money? I don't know.

Anyways, I am in wait and see mode. Right now I see two possibilities;

1. He has been assaulting her and abusing her. He is a nut job that stalks her. Local Ohio police won't arrest him. Urban has been sweeping this issue under the rug. OSU University has been sweeping this under the rug. And they all will fall. Of course, OSU is now investigating, that should be changed.

2. She is woman who hates her husband. Makes exaggerated claims. Urban sees this, knows his assistant coach is getting hosed as says get help, get her straightened out. It gets worse, they split up. She calls police to report window peekings, SUV following, gets restraining order. What do you think she tells the 5 year old son? Daddy is bad, he will hurt you, maybe? Could explain why he violated restraining order and drove his son right to her door. She nails him again.

As I said before, need to hear third party testimony. Has to be other witnesses. Then I'll decide who to believe.

not sure why the OP is so confused about this. has really nothing to do with who you believe this all has to do with Urban's reporting obligations related to Title IX statutes.

you need to reframe your narrative around what the real case is....

1) if he knew and 2) if he did not follow proper protocol and 3) coach's wives are covered by Title IX = he is done

the confusion is whether Title IX extends to a 3rd party like the coach's wife or whether ALL reports of violations that are learned by authorities (like coach of football team) are supposed to be reported.

stick with what the actual discussion is about which has nothing to do with who is peeping through a window at 1am

Meyer's wife is an employee of The Ohio State University.

Doesnt she need to report this?

Knowing Urban, he'll file for divorce just so he can keep his job

I think what will happen here is rather obvious. First, you have this 6 person "Committee" to investigate these accusations. How long will that take? I cannot see it taking less than two months. Now Ohio State's first game is 9/1 against the worst team in the Pac 12 at home. Then they host the worst team in the Big 10 the following week. You and I would be 2-0 after those two games. Then they go to Arlington Texas to play a TCU team that returns 3 starters on offense. After that comes another patsy, Tulane, at home. Now anyone with any coaching skill at all should be able to go 4-0 with that patsy schedule. Now comes the real test.

After those 4 easy games, Ohio State goes to Penn State. 9/29 is the date. It is very questionable if this "Committee" investigation Meyer's fate will have reached any conclusions by then. Knowing what a liar and a cheat Ohio State AD Gene Smith is, he makes sure that Meyer does NOT return for the Penn State game. The reasons are simple. If Acting HC Ryan Day manages to defeat Penn State, then Meyer becomes expendable, and Smith can worry about potential NCAA penalties knowing that his school fired Meyer as soon as they found out about him. Now if Day loses to Penn State, then Smith knows that he must get Meyer back to work before the entire season is lost. I do not expect to see the Meyer situation resolved before October.

they may drag their feet but the results are obvious to me. i dont think once the police are involved and no charges are filed anyone has any further obligation but thats not how title IX works and it seem clear he knew. Gene Smith may need to work fast since the longer it goes on the more people will question his job with the university. he belongs in the discussion of shady people as well.

Gene Smith was the AD when Jim Tressell was finally let go after numerous violations. Smith is as crooked as they come.

Purely speculation on my part but ...

I don’t believe anything about this ordeal is obvious and find it hard to believe OSU’s record the first 5 games will have a bearing on the outcome.

OSU is more than likely doing one of two things at this moment.

One (most likely), build a case for termination with cause. If they deem this a Title IX violation (which it most likely is) termination with cause should easily stand up. Even if it is not perceived/ruled a Title IX violation it could still be a violation of his current contract. That would still provide justification to terminate with cause but would probably result is some type of buyout to Meyer from the university.

Second would be finding ways to defend Meyer to the end - much as Ole Miss did with Freeze. I can’t see the university being this dumb or the end justifying the means.

While AD Smith may be everything you say he is, it is not relevant to this situation. Future actions taken by OSU will not be made at the AD level. These decisions will come from the BOT/President/ Power Brokers. Matter of fact, I would be shocked if Smith and most of Meyer’s staff don’t end up collateral damage if Meyer is terminated.

If they go the termination route, I think this ends quickly. If they elect to defend Meyer, I agree with you - this could be months or longer being settled.
