Auburn -3 vs Wahington - Quality of Play

Washington is a paper champion Washington < Ohio State < Top Tier teams of the SEC ( Bama, Georgia )

You have auburn who beat both Georgia in the regular season. Early in the season is all about raw talent although because teams have not practiced all that much even wit those heavy returning starters. Auburn recruits better than Washington and you will see this early on. Plan on betting 2nd Half Auburn as well as these beefy line on both sides will wear down Washington.

I agree on this being a pseudo-elimination game for both teams. I totally disagree that Auburn recruits better than Washington. Recruiting numbers mean nothing until these players actually play in a college game. Udub has a top 5 offensive line. They are big, experienced, and physical. They also have a Top 5 defensive secondary (ranked #1) and a coaching staff (ranked #4) far superior to Auburn's staff. Washington also has 3 players on various lst string All American Teams. Auburn has none. Auburn also lost their last two games of last season, both of which were played in Atlanta. Washington will make it 3 losses in a row for Auburn in Atlanta. Washington +3 is the play.

Gonna lay off this one but even though I think Browning is overrated I think he will have some success against Auburn's pass defense.
Gun to my head I would take U Dub, maybe a 21 20 type of game

Like W in this spot first game of season...if it's later in the year then different story.
Great coach with great team almost intact... Auburn not so much especially on the OL which Auburn offense predicated on with the running game. This is a huge factor in first game vs a top 5 team

Auburn also lost their O-line coach to Texas. Many considered Herb Hand the best line coach in the SEC. He will definitely
be missed early in the season.

If you read the ENTIRE sentence, you will see that I am absolutely correct. I said that "recruiting numbers mean nothing until these players ACTUALLY PLAY IN A GAME". That is an indisputable, unquestionable fact. All the "star" rankings are is someones opinion about how the kid played in High School. A recruit is not worth a thing if he spends his carreer sitting on the bench.

Recruits you say,well they will be introduced to college football right into a playing a title contender in Washington.Washington don't have to replace people as they have 17 starters back.The game is also being played at a neutral site so home field is not a factor even though the game is closer to Auburn.Washington will relish the roll of (underdog)and will be totally ready for anything Auburn will throw at them,....i'll take the 3 points on opening week.

You obviously believe in the old adage - post it enough and it becomes true.

Washington has some talent on their O-line but they have little quality depth behind the starters. They are also moving kids around to new positions. If you would have done a little homework before posting, you would know who starts the first game is very iffy at this time.

Adams (LT) and McGary (RT) are by far their best two linemen. Adams is one of the best in the country. But unfortunately for him, he is coming off an acl injury. If reports coming out of Seattle are true he has not resumed practicing yet and his return for the Auburn game is questionable. If he does not return or is less than 100 percent, Washington's advantage on the OL takes a huge hit. It also means they will most likely move their LG (Wattenberg) to LT or start a redshirt freshman at the position (Henry Bainivalua). Wattenberg was moved out last year after Adams was injured but Bainivalua has been receiving most of the snaps there during camp. Neither of these kids have the talent or experience to replace Adams.

Then there is Nick Harris. You probably remember him from the bama game. He was the right guard who was abused over and over and over again. He is being moved to center this year. Hopefully he is a better center than guard or his nightmare has just begun.

Who replaces Harris at right guard is up in the air. It will be either Bainivalua if he is not moved to LT or Henry Roberts. Roberts has been a major disappointment up to now and Bainivalua (as mentioned previously) is a redshirt frosh. Can’t imagine either of these guys holding their own against one of the best D-lines in the country.

Bottom line, if Adams is 100 percent and Wattenberg remains at LG, Washington will have 3 solid OL starters returning from last years team. Only new starters will be center and RG.

Everything changes however if Adams does not play and Wattenberg is forced outside. Washington will end up starting a backup LT, a backup LG, a new center and new RG. McGary will be the only returning starter who started at his position last year. The experience factor you keep harping on goes right out the door along with any advantage Washington has across the front.

Not many teams do when they face a Nick Saban led Alabama. Guess what though, UW held their own in the game.

Clover, you are right about Hand’s reputation as an O-line coach, but I have no idea why that is. He failed miserably at his last two stops - Penn State and AU. Auburn’s O-line was very average last year despite being one of the most experienced units in the country and Penn State gave up over 3 sacks per game Hand’s final two seasons (ranked 122 and 111).

Malzahn’s relationship with Hand go back to their coaching days at Tulsa. Look up BFF in the dictionary and their picture will be there. Despite their friendship and despite Malzahn’s loyalty (to a fault), Hand was told to pound sand and find employment elsewhere. That would not have happened if he was doing a good job.

Bringing Grimes back was not a sexy hire - he can’t recruit a lick. He is, however, a damn good position coach. Despite AU’s lack of talent this year, look for them to improve fundamentally and be more physical than the previous two years.

Who was evaluating the second string line? I commented on who would replace the starter if he was to miss the game and what outcome that had on the unit as a whole.
