Preview: Rangers at Yankees
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

Texas Rangers rookie first baseman Ronald Guzman quickly is developing a reputation as a Yankee killer, even though his sample size is small. Guzman belted three home runs as the Rangers halted the New York Yankees' four-game winning streak, leveling the series at one game apiece entering Saturday afternoon's matchup at Yankee Stadium.

Guzman became the first rookie in major-league history to homer in his first four career games against the Yankees and the first rookie with a three-homer game against them. Adrian Beltre homered and drove in four runs and Elvis Andrus had four hits and three RBIs for Texas, which has scored 37 runs in winning three of four. Catcher Austin Romine went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs for New York, which lost despite scoring at least five runs for the 12th consecutive home game -- its longest streak since 1938. Didi Gregorius collected three hits and is 14-for-40 in the last 10 games for the Yankees, who trail first-place Boston by nine games.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Southwest (Texas), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Drew Hutchison (1-2, 6.29 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Lance Lynn (8-8, 4.58)

Hutchinson made his first appearance with Texas, and first start of the season, versus Baltimore on Sunday and was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on six hits over just three innings. He made 11 relief appearances with Philadelphia before he was released at the end of May, going 0-1 with a 4.64 ERA. Brett Gardner is 5-for-23 against Hutchison but three of the hits were homers.

Lynn turned in a masterpiece in his first start with New York on Monday, striking out nine and blanking the Chicago White Sox on two hits over a season-high 7 1/3 innings. He also did not allow a run in his Yankees debut, coming out of the bullpen to pitch 4 1/3 scoreless innings versus Baltimore. Shin-Soo Choo is the only Texas player to face Lynn, going 4-for-14 with a homer and double.

WALK-OFFS

1. Guzman is 8-for-15 with six homers and eight RBIs in four games versus New York this season.

2. New York 2B Gleyber Torres is mired in a 3-for-29 slump over the past eight games.

3. Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre hit his 469th homer and tied Tris Speaker for 15th place with 1,134 career extra-base hits.

Preview: Red Sox at Orioles (Game 1)
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

The Boston Red Sox have saved some of their best offensive efforts for their American League East rivals, although none of them quite compared to their last performance. The Red Sox hope to put their major league-best offense on display two more times Saturday when they visit the Baltimore Orioles for a day-night doubleheader between the best and worst teams in baseball.

Boston (82-35) overcame an early five-run deficit by piling on 14 runs after the fifth inning in Friday's 19-12 series-opening victory - the club's highest offensive output on the road since a 22-run outburst on April 12, 1994. The Red Sox, who own a nine-game lead over the New York Yankees in the East and boast a 40-15 division record, have scored at least 10 runs in a game 15 times this season - eight of which have come against division rivals. While Boston won for the 11th time in 13 contests, Baltimore (35-81) fell to 3-6 in August and lost a game in which it scored at least 12 runs for the first time since July 26, 2006. The Orioles are 2-11 versus the Red Sox this season and have dropped 14 of their last 16 meetings overall against them.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), MASN 2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (11-6, 3.93 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Jimmy Yacabonis (0-0, 7.15)

Price extended his unbeaten streak to five outings and recorded his fourth straight quality start in Sunday’s no-decision against the Yankees, yielding two runs over six innings. The former Cy Young Award winner has been particularly sharp in his last three turns, winning once while giving up a total of three runs across 20 1/3 innings. Price logged a complete-game victory against Baltimore on May 17 and has been dominant in his 11 career starts in Camden Yards, going 7-0 with a 2.96 ERA.

Yacabonis has yet to lose in 18 career appearances (two starts) and is set to pitch in his first major-league game since July 9 when he permitted three runs over five frames against the Yankees. The New Jersey native hasn't fared very well at Triple-A Norfolk in four turns since, going 0-2 with an 11.33 ERA. Yacabonis made two of his 14 relief appearances last year against Boston, giving up a run on two hits over 1 1/3 combined innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The 31 combined runs in the opener were the most total runs scored in a major-league game this season.

2. Red Sox OF Mookie Betts is 11-for-20 with seven extra-base hits, six walks and 11 runs scored over his last five contests.

3. Baltimore OF Cedric Mullins was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday afternoon and finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored in his big-league debut.

Preview: Nationals at Cubs
Gracenote
Aug 10, 2018

The Chicago Cubs have not lost a series at home in nearly three months and they can clinch another win at Wrigley Field when they continue a three-game set with the Washington Nationals on Saturday. The Cubs eked out a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon in the series opener to improve to 36-21 in "The Friendly Confines" while bumping their lead in the National League Central to three games over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jason Heyward had a two-run single, Anthony Rizzo drew a go-ahead bases-loaded walk and six pitchers combined to work around nine hits for Chicago, which is 8-0-2 in its last 10 Wrigley series since being swept in a two-gamer against Cleveland on May 22-23. Coming off a 7-3 homestand, Washington went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base in dropping the opener of a seven-game road trip. The Nationals have been held to three runs or fewer in each loss of a 1-3 stretch and they sit six games out in the NL East entering Friday night action. Tanner Roark has been on an impressive roll for Washington and he'll try to keep it going Saturday when he starts opposite All-Star Jon Lester on Saturday.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, MASN (Washington), ABC 7 (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Tanner Roark (6-12, 4.21 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (12-4, 3.44)

Roark is 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA over his last three starts, striking out 20 batters and walking one in 22 innings. The 31-year-old owns a 3.47 ERA on the road, compared to 5.00 at home. Roark has also found some success in his career at Wrigley Field, where he is 3-1 with a 3.24 ERA in five games (four starts).

While Roark is surging, Lester has been scuffling and owns an 8.53 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break. He has twice produced just one strikeout in that span and allowed six home runs during the rocky stretch. The 34-year-old allowed two runs over 9 2/3 innings in two appearances against the Nationals in the ALDS last October and has a 2.79 ERA in six career regular-season matchups.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals OF Bryce Harper went 1-for-3 with a walk after missing Thursday's game against Atlanta due to knee pain.

2. Rizzo has reached safely in 14 straight games and needs one hit for 1,000 in his career.

3. The Cubs signed LHP Jorge De La Rosa and optioned LHP Randy Rosario to Triple-A Iowa.

Preview: Rays at Blue Jays
Gracenote
Aug 10, 2018

The Tampa Bay Rays finally were able to enjoy a breather following six consecutive one-run decisions, opening a nine-game road trip by blitzing the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 in Friday night's series opener. The Rays have dominated the season series against the Blue Jays, winning six of seven entering Saturday's matinee at Rogers Centre.

Michael Perez clubbed his first career homer and Ji-Man Choi went deep for the second time in as many days for Tampa Bay. The Rays also received three RBIs from Joey Wendle and three hits from rookie Willy Adames to win for the third time in four games. Randal Grichuk has hit safely in four straight games and nine of 10 for the Blue Jays, who have lost six of their last seven at home. Toronto, which has allowed 38 runs during a 1-4 stretch, sends Sam Gaviglio to the mound to oppose Ryne Stanek.

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), Sportsnet-1 (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Ryne Stanek (1-3, 2.56 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH RH Sam Gaviglio (2-4, 5.08)

Stanek surrendered a pair of solo homers in two innings while serving as the opener versus Baltimore on Wednesday, but he fanned four and has nine strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings over his last two outings. Stanek has surrendered only four homers in his last 33 appearances, with all coming against the Orioles in an 11-day span. Stanek struck out three in two scoreless innings versus Toronto on June 12.

Gaviglio's winless drought reached 13 appearances dating to May 30 when he was saddled with a no-decision at Seattle on Sunday after giving up three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. He is 0-4 since winning at Philadelphia on May 25, including a loss at Tampa Bay on June 11, when he gave up five runs over 3 1/3 innings. Rookie Jake Bauers is 2-for-2 with a homer and double versus Gaviglio.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays LH Blake Snell pitched five perfect innings Friday but became the fourth pitcher in the live-ball era to be pulled during a perfect game of at least five frames.

2. Blue Jays DH Kendrys Morales is 1-for-19 over his last five games.

3. Adames is 7-for-15 during a four-game hitting streak.

Preview: Twins at Tigers
Gracenote
Aug 10, 2018

The Detroit Tigers ended a six-game losing streak in the series opener and look to put back-to-back wins together for just the second time in more than a month when they host the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night. Niko Goodrum and Jose Iglesias each belted two-run homers and the Tigers held on for a 5-3 victory on Friday after managing just eight runs during their winless six-game road trip.

Iglesias, who has hit safely in four straight and seven of his last eight games for Detroit, is batting .316 with four homers to go along with 22 RBIs in 53 career games against the Twins. Veteran left-hander Francisco Liriano will try to snap a long winless streak when he toes the rubber for the Tigers in the middle contest of a three-game set and opposes Kyle Gibson, who gave up three runs over six innings in a loss to Detroit on May 23. Minnesota made a run at first-place Cleveland in the American League Central but has dropped four of the last five contests and is only 9-12 since to All-Star break. Infielder Logan Forsythe has proved to be a solid acquisition for the Twins at the trade deadline, going 12-for-28 during an eight-game hitting streak after a 0-for-1 effort in his debut with the team.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (5-9, 3.60 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Francisco Liriano (3-6, 4.37)

Gibson has lost three of his past four starts, including the last two against Cleveland while allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and six walks across 11 innings. The 30-year-old Indiana native, who is 10 strikeouts from his career high of 145 in 2015, is 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 12 road starts - limiting opponents to a .210 batting average. Nicholas Castellanos has two homers versus Gibson, who is 6-8 with a 5.52 ERA in 17 career games against Detroit.

Liriano is winless in his last 13 appearances after taking a tough-luck loss Sunday at Oakland when he permitted two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings to drop to 105-105 in his career. The 34-year-old Dominican was 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts during April but is 0-5 with a 4.84 mark since. Forsythe is 3-for-7 with a double against Liriano, who is 3-1 with a 5.61 ERA in five career outings versus Minnesota.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Twins traded RHP Fernando Rodney to Oakland for a prospect Thursday and recalled INF Tyler Austin and RHP Tyler Duffey.

2. Detroit signed free-agent RHP Zach McAllister, who went 1-2 with a 4.97 ERA with Cleveland, on Friday and added him to the roster.

3. Minnesota manager Paul Molitor needs one victory to move past Frank Quilici (280) for sole possession of fifth place on the club’s all-time list.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Reds
Gracenote
Aug 10, 2018

Five hits usually aren't enough for a team to record a victory, even when it's facing a last-place club. The Arizona Diamondbacks hope for a better offensive effort when they visit the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series.

Arizona, which is tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West, registered four singles and a double while striking out 10 times in a 3-0 loss. Paul Goldschmidt has gone 6-for-19 during his four-game hitting streak after recording two of the Diamondbacks' hits in the opener of their nine-game road trip. Jose Peraza went 2-for-4 and scored a run in the victory for Cincinnati, which resides in the NL Central basement. The 24-year-old Venezuelan shortstop has hit safely in four straight contests and seven of his last eight, going 10-for-36 in that span.

TV: 6:40 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, FS Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (3-2, 4.92 ERA) vs. Reds RH Matt Harvey (5-7, 5.37)

Ray remained winless since June 27 when he settled for a no-decision against San Francisco on Sunday after allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old Tennessean, who has gone 0-2 with a 5.74 ERA in seven turns during his drought, has posted a 2.57 ERA on the road this season but a 7.18 mark at home. Ray has made three career starts against Cincinnati, going 1-2 with a 4.24 ERA.

Harvey has lost his last two decisions, including a setback at Washington last Saturday in which he surrendered five runs and nine hits over four innings. The 29-year-old native of Connecticut has failed to last six frames in any of his last six turns after working at least that many in three of his previous four outings. Harvey is 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA in five career starts against Arizona - all while with the New York Mets.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks OF Steven Souza Jr. went 1-for-3 on Friday in his first game since crashing into the outfield wall against Philadelphia on Tuesday.

2. Cincinnati 3B Eugenio Suarez registered his 88th RBI in the series opener to tie Javier Baez of the Chicago Cubs for the NL lead.

3. Arizona 3B Deven Marrero, who hit .167 with seven RBIs in 49 games this season, was sent outright to Triple-A Reno on Friday after being activated from the disabled list and designated for assignment three days earlier.

Preview: Red Sox at Orioles (Game 2)

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), MASN 2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Hector Velazquez (7-0, 2.64 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Yefry Ramirez (1-4, 5.66)

Velazquez appears to be the favorite to start the nightcap but will only pitch if he's not needed in the opener, according to comments made by manager Alex Cora following Friday's opener. The second-year veteran would make his fourth start of the season and first since July 10 when he allowed one run over three innings against Texas. Adam Jones (3-for-4) and Trey Mancini (2-for-4) have fared well versus Velazquez, who is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA in three games (one start) against Baltimore this season.

Ramirez turned in the worst outing of his seven-start big-league career Sunday in Texas, surrendering five runs on five hits and five walks while throwing 69 pitches over only 1 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old, who owns a 3.86 ERA at home, wasn’t much better in his previous turn - permitting six runs over five frames in New York versus the Yankees. Ramirez notched his most recent victory on July 24 against the Red Sox and has allowed six runs across 9 1/3 innings while splitting a pair of starts versus Boston this year.

WALK-OFFS

Preview: Indians at White Sox
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

The Cleveland Indians look to avoid losing a road series for the first time in almost six weeks when they visit the Chicago White Sox for the middle contest of a three-game set Saturday night. The Indians, who last lost a road series June 29-July 1 at Oakland, were blanked 1-0 on Friday night in the opener against the White Sox but maintained their 11-game lead in the American League Central.

Cleveland’s All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor boasts an eight-game hitting streak (13-for-33) coming into Saturday and owns six hits in nine career at-bats against Chicago’s scheduled starter James Shields. The Indians might be without slugger Edwin Encarnacion, who has launched three career homers against Shields, after he left Friday’s contest with left arm discomfort. Rookie outfielder Daniel Palka belted a solo homer to win it in the ninth inning for the White Sox in the series opener and owns three blasts in his last eight games to push his total to 18 on the season. The victory ended a three-game losing streak for Chicago, which has dropped eight of 11 to Cleveland in 2018 but is 3-2 at home in the season series.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (11-6, 2.25 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (4-13, 4.50)

Bauer has won each of his last three starts, allowing two runs on nine hits and nine walks across 19 1/3 innings with 24 strikeouts combined. The 27-year-old UCLA product has limited opponents to two or fewer runs in nine of his last 10 starts and reached 200 strikeouts (206) for the first time in his career. Avisail Garcia is 8-for-24 with a homer versus Bauer, who is 7-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 16 career appearances (14 starts) against the White Sox.

Shields is winless in his last four starts after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks over six innings in a no-decision Sunday at Tampa Bay. The 36-year-old Californian, who has served up six homers and walked 10 in his last three turns across 17 innings, owns a 3.64 ERA at home as opposed to 5.75 on the road. Shields beat Cleveland with seven innings of one-run ball on June 12, improving to 5-7 in 21 career starts against the Indians.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland CF Leonys Martin was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with an undisclosed medical condition.

2. Chicago 1B Jose Abreu is batting .342 since the All-Star break but is just 7-for-43 against the Indians this season.

3. The Indians lead the majors with 93 stolen bases after recording three Friday, while the White Sox are tied for fifth (79).

Preview: Brewers at Braves
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

The Atlanta Braves overcame a mid-July slump to win nine of their last 12 games entering Saturday’s home matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers, and a rejuvenated offense has them rolling as the wild National League playoff race intensifies. The Braves are tied with Philadelphia for the top spot in the NL East and moved percentage points ahead of former wild-card leader Milwaukee by smashing the Brewers 10-1 in the series opener, backed by four RBIs from Ender Inciarte.

Atlanta has scored 58 runs on 111 hits during its past 12 games, sparked by Inciarte’s .300 average and nine RBIs during that span and Nick Markakis, who doubled twice and scored three times Friday while raising his NL-leading average to .326. One of the most impressive parts of Atlanta’s performance Friday – which included Kevin Gausman giving up one run in eight innings in his second start with the team - was second baseman Ozzie Albies drawing three walks after not earning a base on balls since July 2. The Brewers have dropped six of nine games in August and allowed 72 runs in that stretch – giving up six or more runs five times – falling three games behind the Cubs in the NL Central. Third baseman Mike Moustakas finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the series opener and is hitting .289 in 13 games since being traded from Kansas City.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers LH Wade Miley (2-1, 2.10 ERA) vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (8-7, 4.48)
Injuries to his left groin and oblique have scuttled most of the first three months for Miley, but the veteran has been solid for the Brewers since returning to the rotation in mid-July. The 31-year-old has posted a 2.25 ERA in five starts since, limiting opponents to a .212 batting average in 28 innings. Miley drew a no-decision in his last start, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings Sunday against Colorado.
Teheran’s struggles through an inconsistent season have been underpinned by first-inning difficulties, as he owns an 8.18 ERA in the opening frame. The 27-year-old drew a no-decision Sunday against the New York Mets, rebounding from a shaky start to give up three runs on five hits with four walks in 5 2/3 innings – and helped himself with his first career home run. Teheran owns a 4.23 ERA in 11 home starts, striking out 59 in 61 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers OF Christian Yelich is 1-for-16 in his past four games with six strikeouts.

2. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman is hitting .362 during his 12-game hitting streak, the third streak of 10-plus games he’s put together this season.

3. Milwaukee placed RHP Joakim Soria (right thigh sprain) on the disabled list before the game and recalled RHP Adrian Houser from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Preview: Mets at Marlins
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

The New York Mets can clinch a series win on the road for the first time since April when they play the second of three games at the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. Amed Rosario had three hits and two RBIs to back a solid effort by starter Zack Wheeler as the Mets opened the set with a 6-2 win Friday.

Austin Jackson added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI for New York, which has not won a series away from Queens since taking two of three at San Diego from April 27-29. Jackson has back-to-back three-hit efforts and is batting .472 with nine RBIs in 12 games since joining New York late last month. He is hitless in three at-bats in his career against Dan Straily, who starts Saturday for the Marlins. The Mets are 5-2 at Miami this year and will try to stay in control of the season series when they turn to rookie Corey Oswalt.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Corey Oswalt (1-2, 5.13 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (4-5, 4.35)

Oswalt surrendered three runs or fewer in five consecutive starts and lasted six innings for just the second time in a matchup with the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. He has not made an appearance on the road since July 4 and enters with a 7.94 ERA away from home. The Marlins got to the San Diego native for six runs over 2 2/3 frames en route to an 8-2 win over the Mets on June 29 in Miami.

Straily is 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA over his last three starts, although he allowed just one hit across 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision his last time out at Philadelphia. He gave up three runs in seven frames against the New York Mets on July 1 and one run over six innings in another matchup on May 23. The 29-year-old has a 3.21 ERA in six career starts versus the Mets.

WALK-OFFS

2. Mets LF Michael Conforto has reached safely in 24 straight road games.
