I don't live far from the site of the former Garden State Park. It is now a huge shopping center with Wegman's Supermarket, Home Depot, Best Buy and several other restaurants and stores. There are only 5 locations in NJ where sports betting is allowed other than casinos. Meadowlands, Monmouth, Freehold, Atlantic City racetrack in Mays Landing and the former grounds of Garden State Park. The only remnant of Garden State Park is an arched gatehouse from 1942. I never even knew that legislature grandfathered in the grounds of the former racetrack. Apparently at one time there was a thought to place an OTB facility there. Garden State Park which originally opened in 1942 was one of the top tracks on the East Coast with big purses. Whirlaway, Citation and even Secretariat raced over the oval. The developer is being opposed by Greenwood racing which has an interest in the Parx casino and racetrack in Pennsylvania. If they were allowed to build a sports betting facility in Cherry Hill, NJ it would do huge business. Great location with a high density of people who would flock there rather than drive down to Atlantic City.
