I don't know anything about New Mexico State, but this seems unusual enough that there must be a play here somewhere:

They open on Thursday, Aug. 25 at home against Wyoming and then travel to Minnesota to play the Gophers on the road on Aug. 30.

That seems like an insane way to start the season. Wyoming is a legit opening opponent and then having to travel to a Big 10 opponent on a short week sounds like a rough start.

Good observation Scott. I can't stand Minnesota's 'circus act' coach but the Gophers
should cover the 17 easily. I have this game at -27.

Thanks Bud.

not something all that abnormal....

What is abnormal is Minnesota starting a true freshman, walk-on QB. Believe Baker Mayfield is the only other walk-on, freshman QB to ever start his first collegiate game for a P5 team.

He was a walk on by choice, he had a bunch of offers but wanted to go to Minnesota because that’s where his dad played, it’s not like he wasn’t on the recruitment radar

very true. kid was IMG's starter and brought two of their OL with him to Minn ... and not like he had any big competition to win the job as all 4 Minn QB are freshman with 0 combined pass attempts

You and RT are both correct. I knew he had several offers (4 according to Rivals) including one from a P5 program (Pitt). Didn't know two OL's from IMG followed him to Minnesota.

It is still strange a walk-on (2 star) freshman was able to win the starting job at a P5 school. Not a ringing endorsement for Minnesota's QB situation.

Yeah I figured you knew, just wanted to put that out there for those who didn’t and yeah you’re right it’s still weird, especially at a P5 school

Let's see, we have a Sun Belt (Independent 2018) playing a Big 10 team. Forget recruiting, not important
which team has the better players. ESPN FPI has Minny at 59th and NM St. at 119th...no big deal.

Anyone mention NM St. lost their leading passer, leading rusher and leading receiver. Yep, NM St. will have
a new starter at QB after 3-year starter Tyler Rogers ran out of eligibility. No big deal, he only passed for
more than 10,000 yards during his career. By the way, the projected new starter, a redshirt senior, is ranked
114th out of 130 starting QBs by Athlon.

Hells Belles, the Gophers have a new starter at QB...ain't that something...………...

New Mexico state's offensive line will have a former starter at every position so there is experience there in the young football season.

NMST will also have a game under its belt (yes short turnaround) but having an experienced O-line with a game under their belt favors NMST.

The line is 17.5 and should go down a little if NMST looks good this weekend and should go up if NMST looks like crap this weekend as this game should receive a lot of action this weekend.

This is a crap game. It means nothing in the long run or in the scheme of things nationally. The only people who will wager on this game are the ones who are desperate to wager on ANY game, AKA the LOSERS.

So you "only" wager on games that "mean" something?

Those crap games are actually the games bettors should be betting.

I like Wyoming against NMS. Wyoming's defense held opponents to 17.5 points per game last season. They return several defensive starters from last year’s squad and they are up against a subpar offense. New Mexico State does not have a proven quarterback, and their running game ranked down at 118th in the country last season. New Mexico State will be playing without Cedric Wilcots II who led the team in sacks last season, and safety Ron LaForce is questionable with a foot injury. Plus the additional info above about playing Minn on Aug 30. BTW I thought this game is Saturday Aug 25th. Was it changed to Thursday?

Beside the OL, that improved (from 100' to 60') defense returning 9 starters.
Frank Spaziani is a very good DC. I see Gophers struggling to put away this team

Loling at NMSt 1H vs Minn. it’s a short turnaround, but they should have some of the kinks worked out vs Minn.
