All good things come to an end, and for Blue Jays rookie Lourdes Gurriel Jr., the end came on Friday at the Rogers Centre.

Gurriel was riding an historic 11-game multi-hit streak. But on Friday, he managed only one hit.
Gurriel was activated from the disabled list Friday night and Richard Urena was optioned to triple-A Buffalo. On July 28, Gurriel became the first rookie in baseball’s modern era to have 10 consecutive multi-hit games. The last rookie to accomplish this feat was Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1911. The next day, Gurriel broke Jackson’s rookie record with his 11th consecutive multi-hit game to set a franchise record and be two games away from the major-league record set byRogers Hornsby in 1923. But in the same game, Gurriel injured his left ankle and knee sliding into second base and was put on the DL. He was the seventh player in MLB since 1900 to record a multi-hit streak of at least 11 games (the last being Tony Perez in 1973). He also has hits in his last 18 starts. Jays manager John Gibbons used Gurriel as the leadoff hitter Friday to give him a better chance for an extra at-bat.

“It might come in handy,” the manager said.
It didn’t. Gurriel grounded out to third in his first at-bat against Philly starter Jake Arrieta. He struck out in the third. The Cuban singled left in the fifth to score Toronto’s fourth run of the game, and then struck out against reliever Hector Nerisin the seventh in his final at-bat.
Gurriel was thrilled that he was able to make it back to the lineup with five weeks left in the season.

“It’s going to help me a lot,” he said. “I’m trying to play as much as I can. It was late a little bit last year, getting hurt, and even this year I missed some games. I think it’s something that’s going to be really important to me, to get as much playing time as I can get.”

Gurriel said he didn’t think about the streak while he was rehabbing prior to his rejoining the Jays.
“I was just trying to do the same thing I was doing before,” he said through team interpreter Josue Peley. “And even while I was rehabbing I was just trying to do my work. And it’s just something that I wasn’t thinking about it too much. If it happened, it happened. If it doesn’t then I’m just going to keep on doing what I’m supposed to do.”
