Talk about speed dating.

A California man is facing 10 felony counts for allegedly sneaking out on dates just before the waiter brings the check, authorities said Monday.

Paul Guadalupe Gonzalez, 45, set up dates across southern California and would enjoy the meals before he'd disappear, the L.A. County District Attorney said, according to a news release.

“Eight women purportedly ended up paying the bill themselves, one in the belief that the defendant was going to pay her back, while in two other instances the restaurants picked up the check,” the prosecutor said in a statement.

ABC News reported that it tried repeatedly to contact Gonzales, but could not reach him. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.

He was reportedly taken into custody on Saturday. If convicted, he faces up to 13 years in state prison, KTLA.com reported. He pleaded not guilty to extortion, grand theft and other charges. Gonzales is accused of defrauding the women of nearly $1,000.

CBS Los Angeles spoke to an alleged victim. She said he was “good looking” and she thought: Why did he choose me?

“He ordered a salad with shrimp, a filet mignon, yes, he went all out” she told the station.

“All of a sudden he’s all, oh, my phone’s dying and I’m waiting on the call from my mom about my aunt. I’m going to go to the car to get my charger and then my first comment to him when he got up was oh what, you’re not coming back?”

She was stuck with the $130 bill, she said.

“I didn’t mention it to the restaurant, nothing. I think I was more embarrassed, my pride was just like, you know, I felt dumb.”

I bet he did this a ton more times, with the vast majority of his dates too proud or too busy to come forward

I didn't even know that's a crime, he thought his dates were paying for the meal :)

Fine, restitution, community service..., if it's his first offense(s), don't waste more money and put him in jail. Butt I suspect the warped state of CA will do just that. Allow criminals to defecate public property, destroy private property, break immigration laws, riot............ butt walking out on a dinner tab? furgetaboutit

as usual the idea is to overstate the punishment and consequences for these
actions to get some free publicity to discourage others from dining and dashing.
now if he stole or improperly used some plastic straws during this crime,
then he might end up on death row (if lucky life without parole).

Well, how do you actually prove he was to be held liable for the meals? Was there an arrangement with the women that he was picking up the bill before going out? Was there an arrangement that the women were going to? If neither of those can be proven, he can easily walk on reasonable doubt... otherwise the feminist movement will take a hit with men being forced to pay for womens meals no matter what.

Does this setup women who go on dates, and assume men are paying for it? What about those women who are "Serial Daters" who just go on dates to get a free meal or a night out, then never call or speak to the man again? Would that be a felony in California, or are women part of their protected class of victims?

He deserves prison. Also, a Browns player was indicted on insider trading today...made 1.2 million and admitted that he knew it was wrong. Probably won't do a day in jail.

they caught the guy. the DA's office released all sorts of negative info on the guy.
they charged him with four felonies and threatened jail time. they love to
humiliate violators and publicize their work to scare off copy cats. he will
probably get a fine, pay restitution, probation, and community service
(picking up plastic straws).

Should have said he is an illegal and he needed to eat to survive in this horrible country. They would throw him a parade and donate thousands to him

[h=1]Grand Theft[/h]Orange County Grand Theft Defense AttorneyTheft is the unlawful taking of another’s property, without their consent, with the intent to steal that property. The laws in California make a distinction between petty theft and grand theft. The law on grand theft is codified in California Penal Code Section 487.
What is California Grand Theft?
Under Section 487 of the California Penal Code, grand theft is an unlawful taking in any of the following, with the intent to steal:

  • Money, labor, or property with a value of over $950
  • Farm products including domestic fowl and crops with a value of over $250
  • Ocean and agricultural products taken from a research facility with a value of over $250
  • Money, labor, or property taken by an employee from their direct employer over a 12 month period with an aggregate value of over $950
  • Property taken from the person of another
  • When the property taken is a car, firearm, horse, or any other farm animal, regardless of value
There are several ways that a person can commit grand theft. These include larceny, embezzlement, trick, and false pretenses. Larceny is the physical taking and carrying away of another’s property with the intent to steal it, like shoplifting or stealing something from someone’s front yard. Embezzlement the unlawful taking of something entrusted to a defendant, like using company money for personal expenses. Trick occurs when one person tricks someone into giving them possession, but not ownership of their property. For example, trick occurs when a person rents a car and then sells it. Finally, false pretenses occurs when someone tricks another into turning over both possession and ownership of property. There is theft by false pretenses when an art dealer tells a customer that the vase in her living room is a cheap reproduction and buys it from her for $10 when in fact the vase is a rare antique that is worth millions.
