Bob Costas is a stalwart of sports broadcasting. He’s spent nearly 40 years with NBC, broadcasting everything from basketball to football to baseball, and acting as the host for over 20 years worth of Olympic coverage. But his time with NBC may be coming to an end. According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post,NBC and Costas are discussing his exit from the network.

Costas, 66, is in the middle of a contract with NBC that goes through 2021. These reported discussions would end that contract early and allow Costas to pursue other projects. He’s currently exclusive to NBC, though his work with MLB Network is excepted in that deal. Costas has been with NBC since 1979.

Despite Costas’ long tenure with the Peacock Network, his desire to move on isn’t a huge surprise. He’s been receding from the NBC spotlight for a few years now. In 2017, he announced that he would no longer be the primetime host for the Olympics, a position he held since 1988. He also gave up his duties on “Football Night in America,” though that move made sense in light of Costas’ criticism of football’s CTE issues. Both roles went to Mike Tirico.

Since stepping back from those two hosting gigs, Costas hasn’t been seen on NBC very much. His role at NBC now is an emeritus role, similar to the one that journalist Tom Brokaw has at the network. Rumors of a buyout make it seem like Costas isn’t fulfilled by that position, and his exclusivity to NBC constrains him from pursuing other projects.

Costas wouldn’t confirm or deny the reports when he spoke to Marchand, but he did say that the split isn’t acrimonious, and that it has more to do with his interests than anything else.

“Sometimes you get to a point where it is not a fit anymore,” Costas said. “It doesn’t mean that anyone is angry or upset.”

What could be next for Costas? According to Marchand, he’s interested in something a little more nitty-gritty than studio hosting: A “journalism show that would feature interviews, commentaries and a critical look at the world of sports and perhaps other topics.”

I vote for decades. When he sensed irrelevance, he turned to being political. One of the more laughable efforts among the many sportscasters who still think that people actually care about baseball as much as he does. Hopefully will fade away...oh wait, he already did.

Sportscaster legend Bob Costas has left his post at NBC after 40 years and covering almost every major sporting event.

Sports broadcasting legend Bob Costas is officially done with NBC after 40 years of hosting the network’s coverage of essentially every major sporting event in America.
“It’s all settled quietly and happily for all concerned,” Costas told The New York Post.

NBC Sports confirmed the relationship is over when reached by Fox News.

Costas, 66, remains employed by the MLB Network and is open to hosting a talk show if the right opportunity comes along.
“If I do anything else, it will be a hybrid of my HBO show and ‘Later,’” Costas told the Post, referring to his NBC talk show that aired from 1988-1993 and his HBO show program that followed.
While the move was quietly announced and received little attention, it’s hardly a surprise to passionate sports fans who have seen Costas less and less.
The broadcasting icon was largely absent from NBC in recent memory after being the face of the Peacock Network for nearly four decades. Industry watchdogs have predicted that Costas' exit from NBC would come sooner than later after his roles on several prominent events were reduced.
MEGYN KELLY, NBC OFFICIALLY SPLIT
He stepped down from his role as prime-time host of NBC's Olympics coverage and was replaced by Mike Tirico in South Korea. Costas had been the on-air curator to NBC's Olympics 11 times, starting in 1992. He also served as the late-night host in Seoul in 1988.
Last summer, Costas essentially informed fans that he would not return to NBC when asked by Post reporter Andrew Marchand whether or not he is in discussions to end his relationship with his longtime network.
“Sometimes you get to a point where it is not a fit anymore,” Costas said.
Costas was removed from the network’s Super Bowl LII pre-show after making comments linking to concussions to football — but Costas said at the time the decision was actually made because of his lack of enthusiasm for the sport.
"The decision was mutually agreeable, and not only do I not have a problem with it, I am actually happy about it. I have long had ambivalent feelings about football, so at this point, it’s better to leave the hosting to those who are more enthusiastic about it," Costas said in an email to Sports Business Daily in early 2018.

I remember the interview he did with Vince Mcmahon was so irritating to watch. That's all I think about when I think about him.

Met Jimmy at Laurel back in the day at the DC International - what a great guy! To this day don’t know what he said that was not true. May not be what some want to hear, but thought he was telling the truth! I miss him and Blackie’s House Of Beef!
