Former NFL RB Trent Richardson signs with upstart football league

Former NFL running back Trent Richardson has signed with the Birmingham, Ala., franchise of the Alliance for American Football, the league announced Wednesday.


"Excited about this," Richardson said, via al.com. "Another opportunity for my professional career. Happy to be doing something that I really love doing, especially in Alabama and in Birmingham, which is a home away from home for me."

[FONT=&quot]The 28-year-old [/FONT][FONT=&quot]running[/FONT][FONT=&quot] back was released from the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL earlier this month, allowing him to join the AAF, [/FONT]ESPN notes[FONT=&quot].

[FONT=&quot]Richardson, who hasn't played in the NFL since the 2014 season with the Colts, was selected by the Browns with the third overall pick in the 2012 draft. He rushed for 2,032 yards and 17 touchdowns over three seasons, including 950 yards during his rookie season in 2012.

[FONT=&quot]Before entering the NFL, Richardson starred at Alabama and finished third in the 2011 Heisman Trophy voting.[/FONT]
