NBA super LeBron James revealed Tuesday on his HBO talk show “The Shop” he was uncomfortable when he had to adjust to being around white people when he first entered high school.

James, who hosts the show which vows to have “spirited, free-flowing discussions," attended St. Vincent-St. Mary Catholic School in Akron, Ohio, as a basketball prodigy. He said upon entering school, he didn’t have any desire of talking to any of his white classmates as he was there to play basketball.

“When I first went to the 9th grade in high school, I was on some ‘I’m not f------ with white people,’” James said. “I was so institutionalized growing up in the 'hood it was like, ‘They don’t f--- with us, they don’t want us to succeed.’”

James said he was only focused on playing basketball.

“So I’m like, ‘I’m going to this school to play ball and that’s it. I don’t want nothing to do with white people,’” he said. “That was my initial thoughts and my initial shock to white America, when I was 14 years old, for the first time in my life. It took me a little while to adjust to it.”

Maverick Carter, James’ best friend and longtime business partner, said in the end it didn’t matter because everyone ended up becoming best friends anyway, according to TMZ.

James added that his white classmates were responsible for teaching him what a pantry was.

“Bread, cereal, chips, doughnuts, all that s--- is on top of the refrigerator,” he said. “When I got to high school was the first time I knew about a pantry.”

James comments came in the same episode where Odell Beckham Jr. revealed he has felt like a “zoo animal” at times during his young career.

I think it's great. A super celebrity being honest. It wasn't insulting to any race or racist at all. I found it interesting he would talk freely about that.

i dont watch the show but based on the article i would take it more as him admitting that he had been given the wrong perception of others based on what he had been told. he shut people off based on stereotypes and learned that they werent true. i dont think its racist. i think its him admitting that he shut others out based on his own ignorance on the subject. the show may say otherwise but it sounds like he admits that what he thought was wrong and likely could be a good lesson to younger people who are influenced on a race based on shit the media says. go meet people and understand them without passing judgement. thats at least how i read it from the article. it doesnt mention anything anyone did wrong except for his own thoughts, which he admits have changed because he didnt know better.

only read the article and quotes, cant see the video so may feel different about it

What if a white celebrity said:

“When I first went to the 9th grade in high school, I was on some ‘I’m not f------ with black people,’” a random white celebrity said. “I was so institutionalized growing up in the 'burbs it was like, ‘They f--- with us, they want to rob us.’”

Cue media and liberal outrage....

Yet they will praise Lebron for being "honest", make excuses for him, and give him the benefit of the doubt... yet if a white person said that, they are labeled "Racist" and ostracized

If McCain had his way with any of his amnesty proposals, we would all be adjusting to living in a 3rd world country and understand exactly how 16 year old LeBron felt as he wandered through a new school. Except we would be wandering through a new country.

And if anyone is excited about that prospect, give it some time, we can still make it happen.

(now back to your regularly scheduled faux-outrage story of the week)

This. The article writers are trying to spin it as race. But what he really meant was that he grew up conditioned to believe certain things that are not true but he realized the truth...Media these days are horrible.

Media these days are horrible. They take things out of context to spin whatever they want to do and the social media will do the rest.

Nonstory. Not racist at all. Anybody who thinks otherwise is way off. Having said that, I think it's blasphemous young punks today think he's better than his Airness Jordan. I can argue he's not even as good as Kobe. Maybe I won't win but it's an argument. At least a better argument than Lebron vs Jordan.

Meh..moving on.

So if it was reversed, and a white person said that about black people on TV, it wouldnt be seen as racist?

So if it was reversed, and a white person said that about black people on TV, it wouldnt be seen as racist?

And I'll try to be civil and answer your question without insults and sarcasm because it's pointless on the internet. There's noway anybody can win or lose or hurt anybody online so why bother with that clowning around.

So to answer your question..if a white person that grew up in a white neighborhood, was sheltered and went to a white school, just by chance never interacted with or even encountered many white people before then all of a sudden had to go live in the ghetto or in the inner city or even just a black neighborhood and then made an innocent comment like Lebron did then NO. It's not racist.

Why would it be? There's a culture shock. A little adjustments to be made. I mean let's face it, all groups of races have their own nuances and attitudes and so on in how they act and how you act around them. I don't care what people say, stereotypes are there because a lot of it's true.

Anyways, no I think it's a nonstory.

Having said that Lebron's an asshole for going to Kobe town/Magic town, Those fans (at least the diehard Laker fans) will never be his. Never. It's Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson town. Those guys were Lakers from beginning to end and fought battles in there. Lebron had no business going there but whatever. That's what really irks me. That offends me more than that comment. It's nothing.

Look dude, that's an honest answer. It's a waste of my time and yours if I give you anything but an honest answer.

But if you ask me if it's the same thing if a white guy says ni g e...well you know the rest compared to a black person calling a white person a cracker or honkey then no. It's not. The N word and the white person is worse. I know I know. I can explain it but you guys won't agree and it's a whole thing and I want to get in a couple games of Madden before bed.

I just don't understand one thing. Therx is a sportsforum, why is every other thread on here about politics or race? It's absurd. It's tired and boring. AND people get so worked up over it! Lol. I swear some of these guys are getting high blood pressure especially the older guys.

I don't know. Whatever I gotta sign off. I spend way too much time on this site.

P.S If somebody wears a whitepride tshirt I see nothing wrong with that. Anybody who has a problem with that is a moron.

Later.
