McCain is one of the worst people ever (was). Trump is no bargain, but at least Trump does it his way. Trump did it all....women, money, big business, president. Just goes to show that you you must stick to who you are, and then find a way to fit that into society. Trump did it. However, I would really like to see him put to the test in life...face some real adversity where there are serious consequences. I wonder if he could ever change gears if he was under extreme pressure? He is one of the few on earth who never had to make an adjustment. He just went with his natural flow. He pulled it off, which is amazing. He has dodged all of the bullets. Plus, he crated Ivanka Trump.
Democrats didn't care about him being a "war hero" in 2008. The NYT even used the playbook Democrats love to break out every election cycle. They printed a front page above the fold story about McCain having an affair, without one reasonable citation and the story never had legs. Conversely, the NYT buried the story about Democrat John Edwards having an affair while his wife was terminally ill, there was even a baby involved. When they were axed why they didn't publish the Edwards story, which was real (unlike McCain's), the publisher said because there were NO CREDIBLE SOURCES

Why cant they just try and run a decent candidate against him against Trumps policies, instead of personal attacks and identity politics"

Most people who served love him because he has their back.
There are exceptions to every rule. I guess you and McCain are two of them.
You may not know it but it was McCain that refused to put Trump on his prepared funeral invitation list. He also excluded the woman he took on to give life to his sinking, stinking Presidential bid in 2008. Sorry, but John McCain was as small a man as you will ever meet. Don't blame your President for this one.
