MNF - Seahawks at Bears
Kevin Rogers

LAST WEEK

The Seahawks (0-1 SU, 0-0-1 ATS) entered the season opener by losing six consecutive road games in September as Seattle visited Denver. In spite of a grabbing a fourth quarter lead on a Russell Wilson 51-yard touchdown connection with Tyler Lockett, the Seahawks fell short in a 27-24 defeat to the Broncos. Seattle’s defense intercepted Case Keenum three times, but the Broncos outgained the Seahawks from a yardage standpoint, 470-306, while racking up 25 first downs compared to 13 by Seattle.

Seattle also committed three turnovers in the loss as Wilson was picked off twice, while running back Chris Carson lost a fumble in the third quarter. The second Wilson interception came on the final drive deep in Seattle territory, but the Seahawks’ quarterback also threw three touchdown passes, including one to former Broncos’ standout Brandon Marshall. The game sailed OVER the total of 42 ½, while Seattle pushed as a three-point underdog as the Seahawks last won a game in Week 16 of last season following an 0-4 preseason.

The Bears (0-1 SU, 1-0 ATS) were on their way to an impressive road upset of the Packers last Sunday night by jumping out to a seemingly commanding 20-0 lead at Lambeau Field. It helped Chicago’s cause that Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers exited the game in the second quarter with a knee injury as newly acquired linebacker Khalil Mack returned an interception for a touchdown.

However, Rodgers returned in the third quarter and led Green Bay to an incredible 24-23 comeback victory, capped off by a 75-yard touchdown strike to Randall Cobb late in the fourth quarter. The Bears managed a cover as seven-point underdogs, but left Green Bay with a division loss as quarterback Mitchell Trubisky threw for 171 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Chicago has dropped 10 straight division contests dating back to December 2016, while last winning a road game against an NFC North opponent in 2015 at Green Bay.

SEATTLE DUE?

The task for Pete Carroll’s team on Monday night is try to not only pick up their first win of the season, but also halt this seven-game road losing streak in September. The Seahawks started 0-2 on the road last season (and 0-2 overall), but managed to win five of their next six games away from CenturyLink Field, while going 8-4 overall before a late meltdown prevented Seattle from the postseason.

Since Carroll arrived in Seattle back in 2010, the Seahawks have gone 0-2 through two road games twice (2011 and 2015), while the Seahawks are riding an 0-4 ATS streak in the last four Week 2’s dating back to 2014.

LAY THE POINTS AND RUN

In Trubisky’s rookie season, the Bears covered in all four opportunities as a home underdog, including outright victories over the Steelers and Panthers. However, Chicago struggled when laying points by posting a 1-2 SU/ATS record with the only victory coming against the winless Browns in Week 16. Dating back to the start of 2015, the Bears own a dreadful 1-7 SU/ATS mark as a favorite, including six outright losses at Soldier Field.

SERIES HISTORY

These two teams are meeting for the first time since 2015 when the Seahawks crushed the Bears, 26-0 as 16 ½-point favorites at CenturyLink Field. Seattle had started the season 0-2 before picking up that shutout, while limiting Chicago to 146 yards of offense. Wilson hooked up with Jimmy Graham for the only offensive touchdown, while Lockett returned the second half kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown.

Seattle has captured four of the past five matchups with Chicago since 2010, while making its first trip to Soldier Field since 2012. The Seahawks held off the Bears in overtime, 23-17 as three-point underdogs in December 2012, as the last four meetings in Chicago have sailed OVER the total.

MONDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

The Seahawks have appeared on Monday night football once in each of the past seven seasons. Seattle has compiled a 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS mark in this stretch, while making its first road appearance on a Monday night since 2014 in a 10-point victory at Washington.

The Bears have split their last six Monday night contests since 2014, but interestingly enough have gone 1-3 at home in this stretch. Chicago was squeezed by Minnesota in the final seconds last season, 20-17 at Soldier Field in Trubisky’s first start, but the Bears barely covered as 3 ½-point underdogs.

HANDICAPPER’S CORNER

NFL expert Joe Nelson checks in with his thoughts on Seattle’s performance at Denver, “There were some positives for a Seahawks team with perhaps the most grounded expectations entering Carroll’s ninth season. Earl Thomas returned in time for the game and made an impact with an interception as a veteran leader on a defense that has lost many key players the past two years. Wilson nearly willed Seattle to a win by himself as the Seahawks had three late possessions down three late in the game and lost by just three despite running 17 fewer offensive plays.”

On the flip side, Nelson looks at Chicago’s late meltdown at Green Bay, “Trubisky took four sacks and gained just 4.9 yards per pass, but he had only one turnover and that was in a desperation fourth down play at the end of the game. The running game produced 5.1 yards per carry as the offense could be improved for Chicago after scoring just 16.5 points per game last season as Matt Nagy’s offensive background could pay dividends over time now in his second game as head coach.”

LINE MOVEMENT

This line stayed pretty steady through most of the week since the Bears opened up as three-point favorites last Sunday night. However, Chicago is currently a 4 ½-point favorite at most books, while other books that have the Bears at -5. The total opened at 43 ½, but has slightly moved to 43 at many outlets.

Seattle Seahawks at Chicago Bears (-3.5, 42.5)

The Bears defense looked amazing in the first half, but then they melted down in the second half as Aaron Rodgers did his thing. Can Chicago recover at home on Monday night against a wounded, yet still dangerous Seattle team?

The biggest question will be whether or not QB Russell Wilson has WR Doug Baldwin (knee) at his disposal. He was injured (again), and is a question mark. Also a question, can the Bears play a full 60 minutes with the kind of defensive fervor they showed in the first half at Lambeau? Seattle pushed on a three-point number last week in the loss in the Mile High City against a Broncos team which might be worse than these Bears.

Reports Monday say that Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin has a Grade 2 partial MCL tear and is in danger of missing Week 2 at Chicago and that’s bad news for an already-thin Seattle receiving corps. If Baldwin can’t go, it’ll leave Brandon Marshall and Tyler Lockett to soak up targets from Russell Wilson.

The Bears opened as a 3-point favorite after their crushing second-half letdown that resulted in a loss to the Packers. But really, that loss was just Aaron Rodgers being Aaron Rodgers (and a terrible blown coverage by the secondary on Randall Cobb’s winner). The takeaway for bettors from that game should be that the Bears looked good. They showed creativity and spark in Matt Nagy’s new offense and Khalil Mack proved his worth in limited snaps. We’ll dig into this game more throughout the week but grab the Bears -3 before the line grows.

SEAHAWKS AT BEARS (-3, 43.5)

THE LEGION OF BOOM IS DEAD

We talked earlier this week about Doug Baldwin’s injury and how the Bears at -3 over Seattle might be a smart play. The spread has since grown to Chicago -3.5 so let’s look at another way bettors can profit off of this game. The total is set at 43, a relatively low number. On paper, the general consensus would be that both teams have great defenses: Seattle is known for its Legion of Boom and the Bears are always tough at home and just got Khalil Mack.

But let’s look at what happened last week. Seattle got torched for 470 offensive yards by Case Keenum and two rookie running backs in Denver last week. This is not the same Seattle defense. But the offense still looked solid with 309 yards and 24 points and Russell Wilson is still one of the best QBs in the league. Chicago’s offense looked incredible in the first half as coach Matt Nagy’s creativity had Mitch Trubisky throwing to wide-open receivers early. In the second half, the offense sputtered but the defense couldn’t stop a one-legged Aaron Rodgers. There could be some points in this one and the Over 43 looks sharp.

LOOK TO LOCKETT

Already this week we’ve talked about how Chicago at -3 over Seattle looked solid (the spread has since moved to -3.5) and how the Over 43 could also be a good play. Let’s look to the Monday nighter once more for a prop that looks like a winner: Tyler Lockett Over 60 receiving yards.

Chicago’s defense looked great for the first half last week. Then it couldn’t stop a one-legged Aaron Rodgers, who led the Packers to three fourth-quarter touchdowns and the comeback win. But what’s most important here was how Packers slot receiver Randall Cobb gashed the Bears for nine receptions and 142 yards. Sure, 75 of those yards came on one play, but Cobb still had a solid day if you take that one play away. Lockett is going to line up in the slot against the Bears and is going to get a ton of targets with Doug Baldwin sitting out. Let’s take the Over 60 on Lockett’s receiving yards total.

BALDWIN OUT?

Three teams are playing on the road for the second straight week to open the season (Texans, Chiefs, and Seahawks). Kansas City was the lone team to win while Houston and Seattle came up. Why is this important? Teams don’t normally start 2-0 when both games are on the highway as only three squads have conquered this gauntlet since 2008 (2009 Vikings, 2010 Dolphins, and 2013 Dolphins). Under Pete Carroll, the Seahawks have gone 0-2 twice with both games on the road, as Seattle tries to buck that trend on Monday at Chicago.

MNF - Seattle at Chicago: I expect this total (43) to hold steady or drop by kickoff as most bettors will point to the Bears stout defense and inconsistent offense. That attack might be able to get going against Seattle, who gave up 470 yards to Denver in Week 1. The Seahawks have watched the ‘under’ go 6-0 in their last six road games versus NFC opponents and playing back-to-back games away from home could keep that trend intact. Chicago posted a 6-2 ‘under’ mark at Soldier Field last season and only one game managed to go over this week’s number.

Preview: Seahawks at Bears
Gracenote
Sep 14, 2018

The Chicago Bears were shaping up to become the toast of the town halfway through their season opener - until Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers crashed their party. Khalil Mack will make his Soldier Field debut as the Bears look to rebound from a crushing defeat in Week 1 when they face the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener on Monday night.

Chicago built a 20-point lead and Mack was looking every bit like the dominant force for which the team had hoped before Rodgers returned from injury and threw three fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 24-23 victory. “Things happen for a reason - I’m a firm believer in that,” Chicago's Matt Nagy told reporters regarding his head-coaching debut. “And when things happen for a reason and you stay positive, then in the end, we’re going to use this thing." The Seahawks also absorbed a narrow loss in their opener, taking the lead early in the fourth quarter before dropping a 27-24 decision to Denver. "It's a big matchup (between) two hungry teams getting ready to go on Monday night," Seattle coach Pete Carroll told reporters. "The Bears had a terrific game going and then, as we all know, Aaron Rodgers kind of stole the show."

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Bears -3.5. O/U: 43

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (0-1): Russell Wilson was under relentless pressure against Denver's defense and finished 19-of-33 for 298 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Seattle's passing game received a jolt, however, when No. 1 wideout Doug Baldwin suffered a sprained MCL in the contest - leaving them to go forward with veteran Brandon Marshall and speedster Tyler Lockett, who each had a touchdown reception. The Seahawks raised some eyebrows around the league by signing linebacker Mychal Kendricks, who pleaded guilty last week to charges of inside trading. Seattle is thin at linebacker, with K.J. Wright (knee) and Bobby Wagner (groin) both sitting out practice on Friday.

ABOUT THE BEARS (0-1): Mack, who was acquired from Oakland and signed to a record six-year, $141 million contract prior to the season opener, was a wrecking ball against Green Bay in the first half with a sack, forced fumble and interception return for a touchdown. Mack and the defense recorded four sacks and will set their sights on a Seattle offensive line that surrendered six sacks versus Denver - three by linebacker Von Miller. Running back Jordan Howard looked comfortable in Nagy's new-look offense, rushing for 82 yards on 15 carries and adding five receptions for 25 yards. Second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky (22-of-35) threw for only 171 yards, hooking up with wide receiver Allen Robinson four times for 61 yards.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Mack has registered eight sacks, four forced fumbles and two interceptions in his last seven games versus NFC opponents.

2. Wilson has thrown at least two touchdown passes in each of his last six road contests.

3. Trubisky has recorded three TD passes, zero interceptions and a 95.6 passer rating in his last four home games.

PREDICTION: Bears 23, Seahawks 22

Ballpark Figures - Week 25

Streaky Teams (entering Monday)

Wins and Losses Streak
Baltimore 3-12 past 15 games overall
Houston 12-2 past 14 games overall
Philadelphia 2-6 past eight games overall
Pittsburgh 8-3 past 11 games overall
San Francisco 2-12 past 14 games overall

Over/Under Streak
Colorado Under 5-1 past six games
L.A. Dodgers Under 11-6-1 past 18 games
N.Y. Mets Under 4-0-1 past five games
Pittsburgh Under 12-4-1 past 17 games
San Francisco Under 17-2-1 past 20 games

Giant Fade

The San Francisco Giants have been a great parlay fade lately, betting against their futility while taking the 'under'. Over the past 14 games, the Giants have won just twice while the 'under' is 12-2 during the stretch, too. The Giants have lost AND the 'under' on 10 separate occasions during the 14-game streak.

That streak will be put to the test, as the Giants take it on the road to face the last-place San Diego Padres. LHP Andrew Suarez will take the ball for San Francisco, while RHP Bryan Mitchell works for the Fathers. The Giants have won just twice over their past 14 games on the road, and they're a dismal 1-8 across the past nine outings vs. RHP. The Giants haven't had a lot of luck inside the division, either, going just 2-5 in their past seven against NL West foes. The only good thing going for the Giants lately has been Suarez, and San Francicso has won four of the past five when the lefty kicks off a new series. The 'under' is 25-7-2 in the past 34 for the Giants against NL West clubs, too, while going 3-0-1 in Suarez's past four outings. The under is also 6-1-1 in his past eight assignments against divisional opponents.

For the Padres, they're just 16-35 across the past 51 against left-handed starting pitchers, while winning just 16 times over their past 53 divisional games. They haven't had a lot of luck at Petco vs. lefties, too, winning just once in their past eight at home against southpaws. While they're also a dismal 1-4 in Mitchell's past five starts at home, they have won four of his past five outings overall, so that might be the way to go against Suarez and the skidding Giants.

The 'under has cashed in five of the past six inside the division for the Padres, while going 6-0 in their past six games to kick off a new series. However, the 'over' is 6-2 in their past eight games, 20-6-1 in the past 27 at home vs. LHP and 4-1 in Mitchell's past five outings in San Diego.

Looking Ahead

Monday, Sept. 17

The Rockies and Dodgers square off in an important National League West Division battle at Chavez Ravine on Monday night. RHP Jon Gray will take the ball for the Rox, while the Dodgers counter with LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu. Gray is 0-0 with a .308 opponent batting average across just 9 2/3 innings over two starts against the Dodgers this season. However, he has really picked up the pace since the All-Star break, going 3-0 with a 3.77 ERA across 10 starts with 49 strikeouts over 62 innings and a .215 opponent batting average during the span.

For L.A., Ryu has been a tale of two pitchers. On the road, he is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in five road assignments, but at home he is 3-2 with a minuscule 1.51 ERA with 47 strikeouts and just six walks over 41 2/3 innings with a .223 opponent batting average. This will be his first meeting against Colorado this season, and that might be a good thing based on his history. Ryu is a terrible 0-4 with an 8.64 ERA across four starts against the Rockies since the start of the 2015 season. It's his highest ERA against any team in the league during the span.

Mariners LHP Wade LeBlanc takes the ball on Monday at Minute Maid Park against the Astros. He has cooled off lately, and the Astros might cool him off more. He is 1-1 with an 8.31 ERA across three starts and two relief appearnaces over 17 1/3 innings with a .347 opponent batting average against Houston this season.

Phillies RHP Jake Arrieta will work against the Mets on Monday at 'The Vault'. He is 0-1 in two outings against the Mets, but he has a 0.68 ERA over 13 1/2 innings with 11 strikeouts and a .188 opponent batting average against New York. Mets RHP Zack Wheeler has faced the Phillies just once this season, allowing three earned runs and seven hits over just 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision back on July 9.

Weather Report

There is a 40 percent chance of rain for the Blue Jays-Orioles battle at Camden Yards, so beware. The Royals and Pirates will be dodging plenty of rain drops in the Steel City, and there is a 60 percent chance of precipitation forecast for first pitch thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Florence moving up through the Keystone state.

They needn't worry about rain in Philadelphia, but the Mets and Phillies will face a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing from right to left field. Four other games will be played under a dome, so the weather concerns during the early part of the week are going to be confined to the east.

Preview: Blue Jays at Orioles
Gracenote
Sep 16, 2018

The rest of the American League East ran away and left the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles behind months ago, but the two teams are still doing their best to disrupt things. Fresh off a series win over the New York Yankees, the Blue Jays will try to finish off the road trip strong when they visit the Orioles for the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

Toronto began the road trip by dropping three straight at first-place Boston and lost the opener against the Yankees before recovering to earn a pair of one-run wins. The Orioles own the worst record in baseball and are looking for any sign that the future might be better, and the organization's minor league player of the year, Cedric Mullins, is creating some excitement. Mullins enjoyed a four-hit day in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Chicago White Sox and is 8-for-16 over the last four contests. Baltimore, which enjoyed its lone three-game sweep of the season over the Blue Jays at home Aug. 27-29, has yet to announce a starter for Monday's game while the Blue Jays will hand the ball to rookie lefty Ryan Borucki.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, TVA (Toronto), MASN 2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Ryan Borucki (3-4, 4.26 ERA) vs. Orioles TBD

Borucki is suffering through a three-start winless streak but turned in quality starts in each of his last two outings. The 24-year-old yielded two runs and three hits over 6 1/3 innings against the major league-best Boston Red Sox on Tuesday but was left out of the decision in a game Toronto ended up losing 7-2. Borucki was not as sharp at Baltimore on Aug. 29, when he was lit up for five runs on eight hits - two homers - over 4 2/3 innings.

The Orioles are scrambling to find a starter for Monday after right-hander Andrew Cashner was ruled out due to a knee injury. The veteran Texan received a cortisone shot on Thursday but was still not able to make it through his bullpen session on Saturday and is pushed back indefinitely. Baltimore could instead give the start to left-hander Sean Gilmartin, who worked three innings in relief of Cashner on Wednesday at Oakland and has not pitched since, before turning things over to the rest of an expanded September bullpen.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays OF Randal Grichuk is 4-for-9 with four extra-base hits and three RBIs in the last two games.

2. Baltimore C Chance Sisco left Sunday's game after taking a foul tip off the mask and is day-to-day.

3. Toronto rookie OF Billy McKinney is 0-for-14 with six strikeouts over his last five contests.

Preview: Royals at Pirates
Gracenote
Sep 16, 2018

The Pittsburgh Pirates inserted themselves into the National League postseason race over the weekend, but only as spoilers. The Pirates will try to carry the momentum gained from a series win at Milwaukee back home when they host the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game interleague series on Monday.

Pittsburgh, which will get more chances to impact the NL Central race with three games against the Brewers next weekend followed by a four-game set at the Chicago Cubs, is finishing the season strong and reached .500 at 74-74 with a 3-2 win over the Brewers on Sunday - its eighth victory in the last 11 contests. The Pirates pitching staff surrendered three or fewer runs in each of those eight wins as young starters like Trevor Williams and Jameson Taillon asserted themselves. Pittsburgh will turn things over to another promising young arm on Monday, when right-hander Joe Musgrove takes the mound opposite Royals rookie righty Brad Keller. Kansas City is enjoying its own surge down the stretch and earned the win in each of its last two series, taking a combined five of seven from the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins while averaging six runs.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS Kansas City, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Brad Keller (8-6, 3.04 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Joe Musgrove (6-9, 3.87)

Keller is earning himself a spot in the Kansas City rotation of the future with a strong finish to the season and will look to allow two earned runs or fewer in his seventh straight outing on Monday. The 23-year-old is coming off a win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, in which he allowed one run and four hits over seven innings while striking out six - his third straight outing of seven or more frames. The last time Keller allowed more than two earned runs came in his last interleague start on Aug. 7, when he was knocked around for four runs and seven hits over six frames by the Chicago Cubs.

Musgrove struck out eight over six innings at St. Louis on Tuesday but was reached for four runs on as many hits and suffered the loss. The 25-year-old managed to keep the ball in the ballpark against the Cardinals after surrendering a total of six homers over his previous four turns. Musgrove's lone interleague start this season came at Cleveland on July 24, when he held the Indians to two runs and five hits over seven innings to pick up a win.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates 1B Josh Bell reached base safely in each of his last eight games.

2. Kansas City INF Adalberto Mondesi is 13-for-28 with seven RBIs over the last six contests.

3. Pittsburgh rookie 2B-SS Kevin Newman has hit safely in five straight and owns four RBIs in that span.

PREDICTION: Pirates 6, Royals 5
