A band will once again take the stage at the Super Bowl halftime show.

The pop group Maroon 5 is scheduled to headline the annual 13-minute extravaganza this February at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga., according to two sources familiar with the plan who were not authorized to speak on the record.

The N.F.L. said in a statement: “It’s a Super Bowl tradition to speculate about the performers for the Pepsi Halftime Show. We are continuing to work with Pepsi on our plans but do not have any announcements to make on what will be another epic show.”

Super Bowl LIII (or 53) will be played on Feb. 3, 2019, and broadcast by CBS.

Maroon 5, led by the singer Adam Levine, who moonlights as a coach on NBC’s reality singing competition “The Voice,” currently has the No. 2 song on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Girls Like Us,” featuring the rapper Cardi B. Since 2002, the Los Angeles band has released six albums, each of which has gone platinum, including “Red Pill Blues” last year. The group’s best known singles include “She Will Be Loved,” “This Love,” “Payphone,” “Moves Like Jagger” and “Don’t Wanna Know,” featuring Kendrick Lamar.

In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Mr. Levine said that the band was on a “short list” to play the halftime show, adding, “we very actively want to play the Super Bowl.”

This year’s show was headlined by Justin Timberlake, who had previously been a part of Janet Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” in 2004. A critic for The New York Times called his return to the stage “heavy on dance spectacle, light on vocal authority” and noted that it “sounded as if Mr. Timberlake were merely providing accent riffs to his own songs.” He was preceded in 2017 by Lady Gaga, who also performed solo, and in 2016 by Coldplay, the last band to appear, with spotlight-stealing cameos from Beyoncé and Bruno Mars.

Mr. Timberlake’s halftime show had ratings down 9 percent from the year prior. The most-watched halftime show featured Katy Perry and her dancing sharks in 2015, with an audience of 120.7 million.

I think its going to be a very good halftime show.

I know that many disinterested people who are watching the super bowl will be happy to watch the halftime show

Let's hope for another malfunction...this time of the microphones. This makes alot of little girls happy with their version of upbeat pop and, after all, that is what the south and the city of Atlanta is known for right? Choice obvously driven by Pepsi and is, "The Choice of the Dumbfounded Generation." Expect a guest appearance by Colin Kapernick as Nike rolls out the new "F the Police," line of shoe wear as the theme will be snowflakes matter.

The NFL tried to force bands to pay for play but haven't done so. They are getting big money from Pepsi for that halftime show. Bands don't get paid and the NFL pays for their production costs.

I like them,I guess I am the only one :ohno:

I like them too. Never bought any of their music. They are the most popular band of the last 30 years or so other then solo acts this is about as good as it gets.

I suppose some of the old timers here expect the SB to get 80 year old former members or rock bands like the Stones and The Who.

A band from Atlanta like Outkast...nooooo. Could Usher put on a show being from the ATL...noooo.

The "most popular bad in the last 30 years?" Maybe in your junior high. I don't really care enough to ask where you got that stat, but I do know that Coldplay (and I hate Coldplay) rates above them in every popularity category and that is just one example.

Actually Maroon 5 has been around for 24 years and has only been charted for 16 years, Coldplay has been charted for 19 years

Money wise, Coldplay has sold $100 million vs. Maroon 5's $75 Million
But, Maroon 5 has sold more units, 99.4 Mil vs. 84.6 mil

as far as your picks to play halftime, Yeah they could have gone with either one of them
Think Usher would have been a better show than Outkast.

I don't think the NFL wants any Hip Hop groups right now because they are not looking for anyone to send a " Message " at Halftime

Yeah...definitely understand Pepsi and the NFL are not going to go for an all-Atlanta show with a variety of artists from that city or from GA. M5 is the safe choice and they probably will drag in a few special guests. They are from LV and when they play here, they are always pulling in local celebs including Wayne Newton. On the other hand if the NFL did want to "get down with hip-hop," they probably would be calling Vanilla Ice. At least this HT show will not be country.

Great choice! Adam Levine is pretty much a household name since "The Voice" came out. If you don't know who he is, you should get out more often.
