“I watched him and I was surprised at how vocal he was about the fact that he likes beer. He’s had a little bit of difficulty. He talked about things that happened when he drank,” Trump told reporters during a press conference outside the White House.
“This is not a man that said alcohol was — he was perfect with respect to alcohol.”
The president made the remark when asked if he had concerns that Kavanaugh “lied or mischaracterized” his youthful boozing during the hearing.
When pressed again on whether he would pull the nomination if the new week-long FBI investigation into Kavanaugh found he’d lied about his drinking, Trump said only that he doesn’t think the judge did lie — and made some quips about his own teetotaling ways.
“I don’t think he did. I’m not a drinker and I can honestly say I never had a beer in my life. One of my only good traits. I don’t drink,” he said.
“Can you imagine if I had? What a mess I would be. I would be the world’s worst. I never drank, okay?”
“I can tell you I watched that hearing and I watched a man saying that he did have difficulty as a young man with a drink,” he continued.
Kavanaugh’s consumption of beer came up multiple times during his testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, where he denied drunkenly assaulting a teenage girl while in high school.
“I drank beer with my friends. Almost everyone did. Sometimes I had too many beers. Sometimes others did,” he said in his opening statements.
“I liked beer. I still like beer. But I did not drink beer to the point of blacking out, and I never sexually assaulted anyone.”
Kavanaugh mentioned beer so much — around 30 times, according to BuzzFeed — that it was lampooned on Saturday’s episode of “Saturday Night Live,” where Matt Damon portrayed the judge as a brewski-guzzling bro who described himself as a “keg-is-half-full kind of guy.”
