Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some interesting NFL trends for the week:

— Steelers are 2-8 vs spread in their last ten games.

— Chargers are 2-11 vs spread in last 13 AFC West home games.

— Minnesota is 12-3 vs spread in its last fifteen games.

— Chiefs are 7-2 in last nine games as a home favorite.

— 49ers are 3-10 in their last 13 games as home favorites.

— Washington is 2-8 in game following its last ten byes.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

13) One of the coolest things about coming to Las Vegas is that this is the big leagues of gambling; sometimes I lose sight of that on my visits here. Tuesday, a guy cashed $41,500 worth of baseball futures winnings and used that money on five futures wagers on NBA/NHL teams, and a baseball bet.

Full disclosure: this gentleman likes the Heat/Mavericks in NBA, Sharks/Sabres in NHL, and the Brewers to win the World Series.

12) After scoring a TD with 0:26 left in Sunday’s game and up 31-12, Jacksonville went for two points; why? Does Doug Marrone hate the Jets? Did the Jets get mad? Why is this smart?

Just kick the PAT and go home; whats the point of making an enemy for the future?

11) Patrick Mahomes sat the first 15 games LY and then played the last game; did sitting and watching almost a whole season of games help him this season? Is it fair to throw a rookie into the fray right out of college, especially if he left college early?

These are billion dollar questions that NFL teams have to answer. Answer them wrong, and you’ll be looking for a new job.

10) One person on ESPN who is well worth watching: Scott Van Pelt on the late SportsCenter. He is smart, has a sense of humor and his people work at their jobs- they provide good info.

9) 76ers-Mavericks are playing two games in China this weekend; hopefully no one will steal anything and embarrass our country, the way the UCLA kids did last year.

8) Was fun to flip channels Monday night and find an Orlando-Philly preseason game; I’m a basketball guy, though more of a college hoop guy, but was fun to see an NBA game.

7) Le’Veon Bell will return to the Steelers during their bye week (Week 7) so he’ll miss two more games. Would be interesting to see the greeting he gets from teammates when he returns.

6) Tampa Bay did the expected and named Jameis Winston starting QB for their game next week; Buccaneers have their bye this week.

Did Ryan Fitzpatrick do enough to earn a contract form yet another team next year?

5) Scapegoat: a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.

Arizona fired hitting coach Dave Magadan this week. Yup, it was all his fault; maybe they shouldn’t have put a humidor in the stadium, to deaden the baseballs. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t Magadan who decided to do that.

4) Minnesota Twins surprisingly made the playoffs LY, went 78-84 this year, and then fired Paul Molitor Tuesday after four seasons running the team. Why?

The worst part of the Analystics Era is that the pencil pushers don’t value managers nearly enough, and believe me, I’m a pencil pusher myself. But I know how important a manager is in setting the tone for the team and keeping things positive.

Computers and charts don’t win games; players do, and the human interaction between players and coaches is very important.

3) Backup PG DJ Augustin has finally found a home with the Orlando Magic; this will be his third year in Orlando, after he played for seven different teams in five years, from 2012-16.

2) Last six times Baltimore Ravens beat their rivals the Steelers, they went 4-2 vs spread the next week, so not much post-victory letdown for them.

1) Surprising fact: Over last 23 years, only five times has the team with the best regular season record won the World Series.

Kris Letang scores in OT, Penguins beat Capitals 7-6
October 4, 2018
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) Kris Letang scored his second goal 1:20 into overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 7-6 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night.

Letang beat goalie Braden Holtby with a slap shot from the point on a power play. Letang finished with three points, tying Hall of Famer Paul Coffey for the most by a defenseman in team history with 440.

Jake Guentzel also scored twice, Evgeni Malkin had a goal and two assists, and Derick Brassard and Jamie Oleksiak added goals in Pittsburgh's opener. Matt Murray made 30 saves.

T.J. Oshie scored twice for Stanley Cup champion Washington, coming off a 7-0 home victory over Boston on Wednesday night in the Capitals' opener.

Alex Ovechkin had his second of the season and 609th overall, passing Dino Ciccarelli for 18th on the NHL list. Brooks Orpik, Jakub Vrana and John Carlson also scored.

Malkin scored 2:45 into the third period, putting Pittsburgh ahead by two, but Oshie tied it at 6 with goals 21 seconds apart.

BRUINS 4, SABRES 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jaroslav Halak stopped 32 shots and Boston rebounded from a season-opening shutout to beat Buffalo.

Brad Marchand set up all four goals, scored by captain Zdeno Chara, rookie Ryan Donato, David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron on an empty-netter. A night after a 7-0 loss at Washington, the Bruins had an easier time against the NHL's worst team last year.

The new-look Sabres, featuring rookie No. 1 draft pick Rasmus Dahlin and Jack Eichel as captain, more resembled the team that finished last in the standings for the third time in five years. After receiving rousing cheers upon being introduced before the opening faceoff in their season opener, the Sabres were booed off the ice following the first and second periods.

PREDATORS 3, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - P.K. Subban broke a tie early in the third period and Nashville beat New York to spoil Rangers coach David Quinn's regular-season debut

Subban fired a one-timer from beyond the inside edge of the right circle in front of the blue line at 3:28. Filip Forsberg and Colton Sissons also scored and Pekka Rinne stopped 34 shots for the Predators.

Jesper Fast and Pavel Buchnevich scored and Henrik Lundqvist had 30 saves for the rebuilding Rangers. They missed the playoffs last spring for the first time in eight years.

The Rangers turned up the intensity in the closing minutes before Sissons' empty-netter with 1:24 left pushed Nashville's lead to 3-1. Buchnevich scored with 35 seconds remaining.

ISLANDERS 2, HURRICANES 1, OT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Josh Bailey scored a power-play goal 43 seconds into overtime, and New York opened the season by beating Carolina.

Valtteri Filppula also scored as the Islanders began the post-John Tavares era by giving Barry Trotz a victory in his debut with the team and spoiling Rod Brind'Amour's first game behind the Carolina bench.

Trotz took over shortly after leading Washington to its first Stanley Cup, taking over after Doug Weight was fired. Brind'Amour, the captain of Carolina's Cup-winning team in 2006, replaced Bill Peters after he left for Calgary.

Jordan Staal sent it to OT by scoring a deflected goal with 1:35 remaining in regulation for Carolina, but the Islanders started overtime with a 4-on-3 advantage after Micheal Ferland was called for tripping Mathew Barzal with 3.2 seconds left.

BLUE JACKETS 3, RED WINGS 2, OT

DETROIT (AP) - Artemi Panarin scored midway through overtime, lifting Columbus past Detroit in the opener for both teams.

Cam Atkinson and Josh Anderson gave Columbus the lead over the first two periods. Rookie Dennis Cholowski and Tyler Bertuzzi tied it for the Red Wings in the second period.

Joonas Korpisalo stopped 18 shots for the Blue Jackets. Detroit's Jimmy Howard made 36 saves.

Detroit honored Henrik Zetterberg, whose career is over because of a back ailment, before the game.

BLACKHAWKS 4, SENATORS 3, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Patrick Kane scored 38 seconds into overtime to push Chicago past Ottawa in the opener for both teams.

Alex DeBrincat, Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook also scored, and Cam Ward stopped 22 shots. Seabrook tied it midway through the third period, with Kane find the defenseman alone in front for a one-timer.

Maxime Lajoie scored for Ottawa in his NHL debut, Colin White and Zack Smith added goals, and Craig Anderson made 37 saves.

AVALANCHE 4, WILD 1

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon had a tap-in goal off a nifty pass from Mikko Rantanen, Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 shots and Colorado beat Minnesota in the opener for both teams.

Carl Soderberg scored, while Rantanen and J.T. Compher added empty-net goals. Varlamov returned to net after missing the playoffs last season with a knee injury he suffered late in the regular season.

The Avalanche are 15-5-3 in home openers since moving to town from Quebec.

Zach Parise scored for the Wild.

STARS 3, COYOTES 0

DALLAS (AP) - Devin Shore, Alexander Radulov and John Klingberg scored less than two minutes apart in the second period and Dallas made Jim Montgomery a winner in his NHL coaching debut, beating Arizona.

Ben Bishop stopped all 30 shots for his first season-opening shutout and the 25th of his career.

Montgomery, who played his final game with Dallas in 2002, made his debut less than two years after winning an NCAA championship at Denver.

JETS 5, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler and Kyle Connor each had a goal and an assist to help Winnipeg beat St. Louis.

Adam Lowry and Brandon Tanev also scored and Mark Scheifele had two assists as the Jets won their fifth season opener in six years. Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves.

Vince Dunn scored for St. Louis.

FLYERS 5, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Wayne Simmonds scored two goals to lead Philadelphia over Vegas.

Oskar Lindblom, Robert Hagg and Scott Laughton also scored for the Flyers, who won their third straight season opener. Philadelphia has at least a point in each of its last four season openers (3-0-1). Brian Elliott stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced in front of an announced crowd of 18,555.

Vegas' Marc-Andre Fleury allowed five goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Malcolm Subban with 9:49 left in the second period. Jonathan Marchessault and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored for the Golden Knights.

Friday’s six-pack

Six highest-paid coaches in college football:

6) Kirby Smart, Georgia, $6.6M

5) Gus Malzahn, Auburn, $6.7M

T3) Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M, $7.5M

T3) Jim Harbaugh, Michigan, $7.5M

2) Urban Meyer, Ohio State, $7.6M

1) Nick Saban, Alabama, $8.3M

Quote of the Day
“Alex (Smith) was being Alex. He left the door open for Patrick (Mahomes) to join him. He said I’m gonna be here at the same time, lifting, eating dinner, watching tape, watching more tape, studying the pictures of the game plan versus all the coverages and doing your own little doodles to figure it out. He (Smith) gave that freely to Patrick, and that doesn’t always happen. That’s a big ego position. The QB room can be a little snitty at times. But Patrick came into a great situation. Alex didn’t make any demands of him, but he didn’t close the door on him in any way. Patrick can’t pay him enough for that opportunity.”
Andy Reid, talking to SI.com

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

13) Took a walk on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas this afternoon; there were three guys who appeared to be close to my age (in my 50’s) who were naked except for a thong, and they were posing for pictures, in exchange for money. Ummm, no thanks.

Can’t help but be curious, though, how much cash they make in a day.

12) Brewers 3, Rockies 2 (10)— Mike Moustakas got the game-winning hit (should Colorado have walked him and pitched to Manny Pina?) after the Brewers blew a 2-0 ninth-inning lead. Rockies were playing in their 4th city in five days; Game 2 is Friday, also in Milwaukee.

11) Colorado Buffaloes have a WR named Laviska Shenault who I think will be an NFL player, but the reason he plays football is unusual, and a little sad.

When Shenault was 10 years old, his dad was hit by a car and killed, with Laviska watching; from that point on, the young man starting growing his hair out in dreadlocks and vowed never to cut his hair, to honor his late father.

When he got to high school and was a hotshot basketball player, Shenault was told he couldn’t play on the school’s team unless he cut his hair, but Shenault declined, started concentrating instead on playing football. Not really sure what the basketball coach was thinking about, but this young man is two years away from playing football on Sundays.

10) Was nice to read an Andy Reid quote today about how much Alex Smith helped Patrick Mahomes LY, when Mahomes was Smith’s backup with the Chiefs. Not all QB’s are helpful to their backups, seeing how backups have sometimes taken the starter’s job. Lot of $$$ at stake.

9) 24 college football coaches are making $4M+ this season, led by Nick Saban’s $8.3M.

8) 58% of NFL plays last season were passes; so far this year, that number is up to 61%.

7) In 63 NFL games this season, there have been 72 games where a receiver gained 100+ yards.

All of last season, in 256 games, there were 140 receiving games of 100+ yards.

6) Houston 41, Tulsa 26— Golden Hurricane led 23-17 after three quarters, but Cougars stormed back and now they’re 4-1, while Tulsa is 0-4 vs I-A opponents.

5) Games scoring zero or one run this season: Orioles 40, Cubs 39. Surprising.

4) Top college football teams at going over the total:

Rice 5-0; South Alabama, Utah State 4-0; Appalachian State, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico, Ohio U, Toledo, all 3-0. Missouri 3-0-1

3) Former major league pitcher Mark Mulder is playing in the PGA’s Safeway Open this week, on a sponsor’s exemption. Mulder shot +3 Thursday, and actually beat five pro golfers.

2) Patriots 38, Colts 24— Julian Edelman was back and New England scored 38 points, which is no huge surprise. Andrew Luck threw for 365 yards and didn’t have all that much help from his receivers, who dropped several passes.

1) Dodgers 6, Braves 0— Hyun-Jin Ryu allowed four hits in seven scoreless IP for LA.

Aho, Ferland power Hurricanes over Blue Jackets 3-1
October 5, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) When the week began, Curtis McElhinney didn't expect to be starting an NHL game Friday night, let alone emerging as the winning goalie in a game in Columbus, where he played as a backup for five seasons.

The 35-year-old McElhinney was waived by Toronto on Monday and scooped up by Carolina on Tuesday as a backup after starter Scott Darling was injured over the weekend. He started in the second leg of a back-to-back on Friday night, stopping 31 shots as the Hurricanes beat the Blue Jackets 3-1.

McElhinney was the primary backup to Sergei Bobrovsky in Columbus from 2013-17. Playing for the Maple Leafs last season, he lost to the Blue Jackets on three separate occasions.

''It's a nice way to get a win,'' he said. ''I think they got the best of me when I was playing against them on Toronto, so it's nice to come out here and make a good first impression with the club.''

Sebastian Aho and Micheal Ferland each had a goal and an assist, and Jordan Martinook also scored to help give Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour his first NHL win and ruin the home opener for the Blue Jackets.

McElhinney grabbed the puck after the final horn and handed it over to the rookie coach.

''He deserved it a lot more than I did,'' said Brind'Amour, a former Carolina player who's been an assistant coach for the past seven seasons. ''I stood back there and yelled, and he was making all the saves. It was great that we were able to get him and he contributes like that.''

Columbus looked discombobulated at times against Carolina's tough neutral-zone defense but made an aggressive push in the second period, only to have shot after shot turned away by McElhinney.

Brandon Dubinsky scored and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 shots for the Blue Jackets.

''I think we were a little bit sloppy tonight, we just weren't executing,'' Columbus coach John Tortorella said. ''But I'm also going to give Carolina a little bit of credit, how they checked.''

Martinook got it started 1:43 into the game when he rifled a shot over Bobrovsky's glove from the slot off a nice feed from 18-year-old Andrei Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick in the June draft who picked up his first NHL point with the assist. Dubinsky tied it later in the first when he tipped in a rebound off McElhinney's skate.

Aho chipped a shot up over Bobrovsky to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead 6 1/2 minutes into the second period. Later in the second, McElhinney made a critical save, swallowing up a point-blank shot from Josh Anderson on a breakaway.

Just after the Blue Jackets came up empty on their third power play of the night, Ferland found the back of the net with a one-timer from the slot 4 1/2 minutes into the third period. McElhinney shut down Columbus the rest of the way.

''It's one of those things,'' McElhinney said. ''I'm always grateful for an opportunity to play any time in this league. For Carolina to give me that right now, it feels tremendous.''

NOTES: A quick whistle kept the Blue Jackets from tying the game in the second period. A referee whistled the play dead after a McElhinney stop, but the puck immediately popped out and Dubinsky put back the rebound. ... The Blue Jackets are now 7-8-3 in home openers. ... The Blue Jackets and Hurricanes are two of the youngest clubs in the NHL. The average age for both teams is 25. ... Svechnikov got his first point after hitting the post twice in Carolina's opening night overtime loss to the New York Islanders.

UP NEXT:

Carolina: Hosts the New York Rangers on Sunday.

Columbus: Hosts Colorado on Tuesday night.

Quote of the Day
“It’s a different place. The energy isn’t like where I say we come from. It isn’t that savage mentality. It’s partly the NFL. It’s different than college. When we left practice in college, we were going to eat University Seafood or Canes. We’re going to chill in the room. We chill together.

When everybody leaves (in the NFL), they’ve got a family, they’ve got a wife, they’ve got kids to go home to. I don’t have that. So I try to build that relationship with my teammates because I want to know who am I going to war with every day. When the heat is on, who is this person outside of just being at work and saying what’s up?”

By The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) Jonathan Toews scored his third goal of the game 2:20 into overtime and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the St. Louis Blues 5-4 on Saturday night.

Toews tied it at 4 at 6:59 of the third period when he corralled the rebound of Alex DeBrincat's slap shot and pushed it past goalie Jake Allen. Toews scored the winner on a breakaway to give the Blackhawks their second consecutive overtime victory.

Chris Butler put the Blues ahead 4-3 in the third just 22 seconds after Vladimir Tarasenko's second goal. The goal was Butler's first in the NHL since March 7, 2015, at Toronto.

Cam Ward stopped 26 shots to improve to 2-0. Allen made 25 saves.

Tarasenko's second goal initially was not called a goal on the ice, but off-ice officials signaled to the referees to stop play for a video review 27 seconds after the puck entered the net.

3) Titans -3.5 (811)

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Texas 48, Oklahoma 45— Sooners were -3 in turnovers, trailed 45-24 with 9:00 left in game, but rallied to tie game before Texas won it with 40-yard FG with 0:09 left. Total yardage was 532-501 Oklahoma, but the there turnovers sunk them.

My question is this: Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray can also play next year for the Sooners, but he’s signed to play minor league ball for the Oakland A’s. As good a football player as Murray is, why would he give up his last year of college and a potential pro career? To me, Murray is a lot like Michael Vick as a QB— I’m an A’s fan, I hope he gives up football, but…….

12) Miami 28, Florida State 27— Seminoles led 27-7 with 5:00 left in third quarter, but Miami scored two TD’s within 0:42 late in third quarter and pulled out a dramatic win, dropping FSU to 3-3 this season, 1-3 in ACC games.

Neither team completed more than half their passes- they combined to convert only 10-34 on third down. Total yardage was 306-200, Miami; FSU is 8-9 in its last 17 games overall.

11) Iowa State 48, Oklahoma State 42— Loudest people in the Golden Nugget sportsbook this afternoon were three Cyclone fans who were very….enthusiastic. Freshman QB Brock Purdy was 18-23 passing for 315 yards and four TD’s. Iowa State had 30 points at halftime.

10) Florida 27, LSU 19— Wonder how many SEC head coaches went to HS in New Hampshire and went to college at D-III Ursinus. Dan Mullen is a good coach; his teams play sound football and Florida is lucky to have him. Mullen was Alex Smith’s QB coach at Utah, under Urban Meyer.

9) Pitt 44, Syracuse 37 OT— Kicker for Syracuse made a 54-yard FG on a wet field at Heinz Field (NFL kickers have trouble kicking there) to give the Orange a 37-34 lead, but Pitt tied it on a 45-yard FG with 0:09 left, then won in OT. There was a 75-minute rain delay in this game.

Pitt’s kicker made 54 and 55-yard FG’s, too. Second straight brutal loss for Syracuse, which got beat by Clemson’s 3rd-string QB 27-23 last week.

8) Colorado 28, Arizona State 21— Buffaloes are 5-0 for first time since 1998. Colorado was 8-16 on third down, 2-2 on fourth down.

Early in 4th quarter, with score 28-21, ASU had 4th-and-goal from the 3-yard line, but instead of kicking the easy FG and getting closer, Sun Devils went for it, failed and never came close to scoring again. Herm Edwards isn’t a great game manager.

7) Upsets of the Day:
— San Diego State (+14) 19, Boise State 13
— Northwestern (+10) 29, Michigan State 19
— New Mexico (+9) 50, UNLV 14
— Iowa State (+9) 48, Oklahoma State 42
— UAB (+8.5) 28, Louisiana Tech 7

6) NC State 28, Boston College 23— Bad beat if you had the Wolfpack, -5.5. NC State led 28-3 with 2:00 left in third quarter- BC covered spread on a blocked punt with 3:33 left in the game.

Yardage was 533-318, NC State; Wolfpack was 10-15 on third down, BC was 1-10.

5) Baylor 37, Kansas State 34— Bears kicked FG with 0:08 left for the win; game was 20-14 after third quarter, but teams combined for 37 points in 4th quarter to put game over total.

Charlie Brewer is Baylor’s QB; both his dad and grandfather played QB for Texas. Think he’ll be fired up when Baylor plays the Longhorns?

4) Western Michigan 27, Eastern Michigan 24— Eagles lose by three points for third week in a row; they’re 14-2-1 vs spread in last 17 games as road underdogs. 16 of EMU’s last 31 games were decided by 5 or fewer points; Eagles are 7-9 SU in those games.

3) San Diego State 19, Boise State 13— Boise is now 3-15 vs spread in last 18 games as a home favorites. Aztecs won despite gaining only 267 yards with only nine first downs.

2) South Carolina 37, Missouri 35— Tigers had gone ahead on a 57-yard FG with 1:18 left, but Gamecocks got walk-off winner, a 33-yard FG with 0:02 left. Mizzou ran ball for 286 yards on a rainy day in South Carolina; there was a 76-minute lightning delay with only 2:42 left in the game- the 57-yard FG was kicked after the delay.

Carolina backup QB, senior Michael Scarnecchia threw for 249 yards, three TD’s in his first college start. Gamecocks were down 23-14 at halftime.

1) Texas A&M 20, Kentucky 14 OT— Wildcats missed a 43-yard FG short in OT— ball hit the crossbar, then Aggies scored TD to hand Kentucky its first loss of season- Kentucky had tied game with a defensive TD with 4:21 left.

A&M outgained Kentucky 390-178, held Wildcats to only 8 first downs.
