Nikola Jokic has triple-double, Nuggets beat Clippers
    January 10, 2019
    By The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge scored a career-high 56 points and the San Antonio Spurs overcame Russell Westbrook's triple-double with 24 points, 24 rebounds and 13 assists and outlasted the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 154-147 victory in double-overtime on Thursday night.

Aldridge had seven points in the second overtime and Derrick White added four points, a steal and a block of Jerami Grant at the rim with San Antonio up 148-144 with less than 2 minutes remaining. White finished with 23 points and Marco Belinelli made all five of his 3-point attempts while scoring 19 points for the Spurs, who have won seven straight at home.

San Antonio made its first 14 3-pointers to set a franchise record - but still needed two overtime periods to topple Oklahoma City.

Aldridge surpassed his previous career high of 45 points, which he set against Utah on March 23, 2018.

The Thunder lost their seventh straight in San Antonio despite Westbrook's huge game. Paul George scored 30 points and Grant added 25 points and 12 rebounds, but fouled out with 25 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

Derrick Jones Jr. scored 14 points, and Justise Winslow finished with 13 points and a career-best 11 assists. Miami had 33 assists on 45 field goals.

Kyrie Irving had 22 points. for the Celtics. After scoring a season-high 135 points a night earlier in a home victory over Indiana, they were held under 100 for only the fourth time this season.

    KINGS 112, PISTONS 102

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 18 points, Willie Cauley-Stein had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the Kings beat the Detroit Pistons with Blake Griffin out for rest.

Stanley Johnson had 16 points off the bench, Reggie Bullock added 15 points and Andre Drummond had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost four straight and 9 of 11.

Griffin, Detroit's scoring leader, got the night off after playing 37 minutes Wednesday night in a 113-100 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers. He did not have a rebound in that game, the first time that had happened in his eight-year pro career.

More early over/under baseball totals for 2019:
    — St Louis Cardinals, Washington Nationals 88.5
    — Tampa Bay Rays 85.5
    — Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins 84

    — Colorado Rockies 82

    Quote of the Day
“We’ll look at all the options. We’re not going to release him, that’s not on the table. But I will say all other options are on the table. Whether the situation can be reconciled and [we] have him back on the team next year, we’re a long way from thinking that can happen. We’re not closing the door on anything at this point.”
Steelers’ president Art Rooney II, talking about Antonio Brown

    Friday’s quiz
Where did Kawhi Leonard play his college basketball?

    Thursday’s quiz
In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the Saints played most of their home games in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

    Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, where Kevin Costner plays GM of the Cleveland Browns, Denis Leary plays the Browns’ head coach.

    *************************

Friday’s List of 13: Basketball notes from this week……

    13) Marquette 106, Creighton 104 OT— Bluejays totally butchered game management at end of regulation; they had ball out of bounds with 0:00.8 left, up 3 points- they throw the ball the length of the court, but it goes out of bounds without being touched, then Marquette drains a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to force OT.

All they had to do was flip the ball to a Marquette player inside the arc and the game was over, but thats not what happened.

Marquette’s Markus Howard scored 53 points, most ever in a Big East game; he nailed 10-14 treys, 13-15 on foul line. Horrific home loss for Creighton.

    12) Virginia Tech 52, Georgia Tech 49— Look at this score, then you remember that Markus Howard scored 53 by himself at Creighton. Different styles of play, for sure.

    11) UCLA 87, Oregon 84 OT— Staggering collapse by the Ducks, who led 76-68 with 0:44 left in regulation- it was 72-59 with 2:30 left. Bruins are 3-0 under interim coach Murry Bartow.

    10) Villanova 76, St John’s 71— Red Storm led by 13 early, by 5 with 3:48 left, but faded badly down stretch and lost for second time in four Big East games. Villanova ended the game on a decisive 14-4 run.

Sign of times; there were 67 3-pointers taken in this game, 48 2-pointers, 30 foul shots. Red Storm basically played only six guys (a 7th guy played 5:00). 67 possessions; slow tempo, lot of jump shots late in the shot clock.

    9) Hofstra 93, William & Mary 90, 3OT—Visiting Pride led by 10 at the half, survived in triple OT— four Hofstra kids played 42:00+, with Wright-Foreman playing whole 55:00. Four guys on W&M played 44:00.

Bad beat of the night: Northeastern (-9) won/covered 81-70 at Elon, but in OT. If you have the underdog +9 and the game goes overtime, you’re supposed to win.

    8) ESPN has obviously told his game analysts to hype up Zion Williamson at every chance, the way they did with Trey Young LY and Ben Simmons the year he was at LSU.

Williamson doesn’t need the hype, he is really good, but ESPN has this new thing where they seem to choose one player a year and they hype him up so much that you wind up rooting against him.

    7) Warriors 122, Knicks 95— Klay Thompson scored 43 points for the Warriors Tuesday, on 29 shots. On the 29 touches where he shot, Thompson dribbled a total of four times. Four.

    6) Pitt 89, Louisville 86 OT— Panthers end a 23-game ACC regular season losing streak. Jeff Capel has Pitt heading in the right direction, and he’s done it quickly.

    5) Eastern Michigan 84, Ball State 82, 2OT— Ball’s Trey Moses had 16 points, 10 assists, but he was 4-15 on the foul line in a game the Cardinals led by 3 in the last minute of regulation. Tough way to lose; Ball State was 15-30 on foul line in a 2-point loss.

    4) Ole Miss 82, Auburn 67— Rebels outscored Auburn 27-9 on foul line, never trailed in moving to 12-2 under new coach Kermit Davis, who built a mid-major power at Middle Tennessee the last few years.

    3) Quinnipiac 89, Monmouth 83, 2OT— Bobcats led 63-49 with 1:36 to play, blew the lead, as Monmouth somehow scored 34 points in last 11:36 of this game, but still lost. Quinnipiac was -8 (22-14) in turnovers, but still got the win.

    2) Kansas State 71, West Virginia 69— Wildcats trailed 20-3 early, by 21 with 17:46 left, but rallied to hand the Mountaineers their third straight Big X loss. West Virginia is 0-3 in its conference for first time since an 0-6 start in the ’02 Big East.

    1) There were 32 games in the Las Vegas rotation Wednesday night; in 8 of the 32 games, the team that lost had a lead of 10+ points at some point in the game; five of those teams led by 14+ points at one point. Lot of runs/droughts in college games these days.

    Friday's Essentials
    Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Chicago at Golden State (-15.5, 221.5) at Portland, 10:35 ET

Friday night’s card is filled with matchups where the home team is clearly favored. Of the nine contests, five hosts are laying nine or more points, requiring a double-digit win to pull off a cover. There’s only one game where the spread is inside five points, but that matchup pits last-place teams as the Timberwolves look to get back to .500 against the visiting Mavericks.

I’ll look at all of the night’s matchups below, but wanted to touch on the game expected to be the biggest blowout just to see if there’s any value in taking 15.5 points with the visiting Bulls in their lone visit to Oakland.

The Warriors hung 149 points in a 25-point win when these teams squared off in Chicago back on Oct. 29. Klay Thompson, who comes off a tremendous shooting game against New York, scored 52 points against the Bulls, setting an NBA record with 14 3-pointers.

Last season’s visit to Oracle produced a 143-94 loss. When it came through in February of 2017, Chicago lost 123-92. It has lost six of seven in this series.

Golden State was saddled with its largest spread of the NBA season on Tuesday night and covered the 17 points handily in an 122-95 victory over the Knicks. The Warriors built up a lead that got up to 33 points and won every quarter, riding a 43-point night from Thompson. Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant actually combined to shoot just 5-for-19 from 3-point range while Curry finished 5-for-19 from the field on his own, so the carnage would’ve been even worse had he shot his typical percentage. The 27-point margin of victory was the Warriors’ second-largest of the season, trailing only a 125-97 rout of Portland on Nov. 23 in terms of dominance.

While New York has lost 15 of 17, Chicago has dropped 22 of 28, including five straight. This will be the Bulls’ 29th consecutive game as an underdog. They’re 0-11 straight up as a double-digit ‘dog and have covered only three times in those contests. Their biggest upset came in a 98-93 win in San Antonio, which closed as a 9.5-point ‘chalk’ back on Dec. 15, in a game where they ralled from a 21-point deficit by winning the second half 55-31.

Neither leading scorer Zach LaVine nor top reserve Bobby Portis participated in that game, while Lauri Markkanen, Kris Dunn and Portis were absent in the October clash against the Warriors. Justin Holiday and Cameron Payne started in that loss but have since been moved to different teams. Holiday is now with the Grizzlies and Payne is with the Cavs.

Dunn, the team’s customary point guard and arguably the top backcourt asset due to his effectiveness on both sides of the ball, has dished out seven assists in nine of the last 11 games and has scored in double-figures in 11 of 12 since returning from an MCL sprain that cost him nearly two months. He’ll make Curry and Thompson work far harder than they had to in Chicago. LaVine and reserve guard Antonio Blakeney each scored 21 points in the 25-point loss to the Warriors, shooting a combined 6-for-12 from 3-point range. LaVine is 'probable' after suffering an ankle sprain.

The presence of Markkanen and Portis should afford their guards the luxury of more space to work with, so we should see improvement over the next few weeks if everyone can stay healthy. Dunn, LaVine, Markkanen, Portis and rookie Wendell Carter, Jr. have played in only four contests this season, losing them all. The Bulls are 5-12 under new head coach Jim Boylen, who replaced Fred Hoiberg in early December. Chicago’s current five-game losing streak is its second-largest of the season. The Bulls have lost seven games by at least 25 points.

This grueling five-game Western road swing they’re embarked upon opened with a 124-112 loss in Portland on Wednesday, allowing the Blazers to shoot nearly 57 percent while being outscored off the bench 56-41. Chicago’s trip continues on Saturday night against the Jazz before continuing Tuesday against the Lakers and concluding next Thursday in Denver. The Bulls will be heavy underdogs in each of the contests, though probably not by as many points as they’re getting tonight.

The Warriors will play seven of their next eight games after this one on the road and will visit Dallas on Sunday night. They’re expected to have one more home game before the DeMarcus Cousins experience begin since the All-Star center isn’t expected to make his debut until after Jan. 16 matchup against the Pelicans. Everyone will be asked to make some concessions to get him up to speed by the postseason, so this could be one of the final games where we’re seeing the defending champs as we know them.

The Dubs have only won four of their last eight home games and were 1-9 against the spread at Oracle prior to Wednesday’s rout of the Knicks. Incredibly, they haven’t covered consecutive games at home since Nov. 3. They lost last year’s 42nd game in Oakland against the Clippers last season, falling to 33-9. Their 27-14 record the Warriors’ worst at the halfway point since the 2013-14 season, the team’s last with Mark Jackson at the helm. They open Friday’s action 1.5 games behind the Nuggets for the top record in the Western Conference. Chicago is tied with New York at 10-31 for the third-worst mark in the entire NBA, ranking ahead of only Cleveland (8-34) and Phoenix (10-33).

    Best of the Rest

Milwaukee at Washington, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Bucks approach the halfway point of their season looking for their 30th win as they try to increase the NBA’s highest winning percentage. Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to play despite a hip issue. Milwaukee is the only team in the league with eight wins over its last 10 contests and opened a three-game road trip with an impressive victory in Houston. This will be its first meeting of the season against the Wizards, who won the last encounter between the teams last February. Washington is 4-3 since losing John Wall to heel surgery and come off an upset of the 76ers to improve to 12-7 at home. Otto Porter scored 23 points off the bench and will look to slow down Greek Freak and friends behind Trevor Ariza and Jeff Green, both of whom have played well since Markieff Morris was lost for at least six weeks due to a neck injury. The Wizards shot a season-best 48 percent (13-for-27) from 3-point range with Bradley Beal tying a season-best by shooting 6-for-11. He’s averaging 28.8 points over the last five games.

Atlanta at Philadelphia, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The 76ers had their four-game win streak snapped in D.C. but will look to improve on their NBA-best home record (18-3) in order to bounce back. Philadelphia has only lost back-to-back games twice this season and cruised in its first meeting with the Hawks back on Oct. 29, outrebounding them 64-47 in a 113-92 rout. Kent Bazemore led Atlanta in scoring in that game with 18 points but is out indefinitely due to an ankle injury. The 76ers have been without guard J.J. Redick due to a back injury but may get him back tonight. Rookie shooter Landry Shamet hit eight 3-pointers filling in for Redick earlier this week and is listed as probable.

Indiana at New York, 7:35 p.m. ET, ESPN:
The Pacers have followed up a 5-0 run against the spread with an 0-5 mark after getting blown out 135-108 in Boston on Wednesday. Indiana is looking to close out a five-game road swing with a 3-2 mark by taking care of business at Madison Square Garden. Center Myles Turner has been sidelined with a shoulder injury this week, which has really impacted the Indiana defense throughout his three-game absence. The Pacers have allowed 123.7 points, losing two of three to the Raptors and Celtics. He’s questionable to return tonight. Point guard Darren Collison has been playing though a leg injury and should continue at the controls. New York has dropped nine of 10 and list center Enes Kanter as questionable due to illness. He paced the Knicks with 20 points and 15 boards in their 110-99 Dec. 16 loss in Indiana but may be on the trade block and won’t accompany the team to Europe next week even if he is still on the roster. If he doesn’t play, center Luke Kornet should get additional playing time. The Pacers have seen their last seven games go ‘over’ the posted total.

Brooklyn at Toronto, 7:35 p.m. ET:
The Nets have gotten Joe Harris and DeMarre Carroll back in the lineup and may see shooting guard Allen Crabbe return soon, so they’re in good shape as they attempt to build on a stretch that has seen them win four of five outright to improve to 13-4 since Dec. 7. This run began with a 106-105 OT upset of the Raptors in Brooklyn as an 8.5-point underdog in which they held a 60-41 advantage on the glass and got 29 points from D’Angelo Russell. Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry played together for the first time in 2019 in Tuesday’s 104-101 win over the Hawks that they secured due to a franchise-record 18 steals. Toronto has won six in a row at home against the Nets and prevailed in 12 of the last 13 matchups.

Cleveland at Houston, 8:05 p.m. ET:
The Cavs have the fewest victories in the NBA, but one of their victims were the Rockets, who they took down at the Q as a 6.5-point underdog on Nov. 24. Cleveland won 117-108 behind 29 points from rookie point guard Collin Sexton and a 20-rebound game from Tristan Thompson. James Harden scored 40 points and dished out 13 assists in the loss and will try and avoid a sweep by helping hand Cleveland its 12th consecutive defeat. Although Sexton and Thompson will be in the lineup, top reserve forward Larry Nance, Jr. (knee) remains out and wing scorer Rodney Hood (achilles) is questionable to return to the lineup. Jordan Clarkson has been the primary catalyst for the Cavs of late despite coming off the bench and is his team’s best shot at securing a cover here since the Rockets remain limited on depth. Chris Paul (hamstring) and Eric Gordon (knee) are still out. Cleveland’s last five games have all surpassed the posted total.

Dallas at Minnesota, 8:05 p.m. ET:
Ryan Saunders debuted as Timberwolves’ interim head coach with an upset victory over Oklahoma City. If Andrew Wiggins can continue to play well, Minnesota has a chance of overcoming all the drama caused by the now-traded Jimmy Butler and now-fired Tom Thibodeau to make consecutive playoff appearances. He scored 40 against the Thunder. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old son of late Minnesota favorite Flip Saunders will make his home debut with everyone on the roster firmly in his corner, so this could be an emotional night at Target Center. Derrick Rose is scheduled to return from an ankle injury to try and help the Timberwolves match a season-best with a fourth straight win to climb back to .500. Dallas is an NBA-worst 3-18 on the road but beat the Timberwolves140-136 back on Oct. 20 thanks to 26 points from rookie Luka Doncic. Mavs point guard Dennis Smith, Jr. has already been ruled out due to a back issue, so J.J. Barea will likely get more minutes and rookie Jalen Brunson is likely to start. The ‘over’ is on an 11-1 run in Minnesota games. Meanwhile, the under is 7-0-1 in Dallas’ last eight contests.

L.A. Lakers at Utah, 10:05 p.m. ET, ESPN:
LeBron James didn’t make the trip to Salt Lake City, so Kyle Kuzma will be in the spotlight as he returns to his old college stomping grounds. Jae Crowder will likely be assigned to slow down the second-year forward as he looks to follow up scoring 41 points in just three quarters to help L.A. crush the Pistons on Wednesday night. With Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball enjoying productive weeks, this could be a big week in the development of the Lakers’ young supporting cast. Currently, the Lakers reside in the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference, two games up on the Kings and these Jazz. Utah will be without point guards Ricky Rubio (thigh) and Dante Exum (ankle), so Brazilian Raul Neto is likely to start and play a major role alongside Donovan Mitchell, who should be the primary ball handler. After a dreadful start to his sophomore season in the pros, Mitchell is averaging 24.4 points and 4.2 assists this month and is shooting 16-for-34 from 3-point range, a marked improvement. Utah swept L.A. last season and will be looking to get back on track in the series after suffering a 90-83 loss at Staples in the only meeting of the season back on Nov. 23.

Charlotte at Portland, 10:05 p.m. ET:
Keep an eye on Damian Lillard's availabilty here. He was holding his elbow during a blowout win over Chicago last time out and has been diagnosed with an elbow strain that the team may choose to be cautious with since they visit Denver for a more important game on Sunday. Portland has won 10 of 14, including three straight contests and would likely rely on C.J. McCollum to serve as primary playmaker if Lillard sits. Shooters Nik Stauskas and Seth Curry would be in for a bump in playing time as well. The Hornets are on their fourth stop of a six-game roadie and haven't been good outside of Charlotte, winning just five of 18 games. The Hornets are trying to get away with playing small due to the absence of starting center Cody Zeller, which may hurt them against a surging Jusuf Nurkic. Portland has won 14 of 18 matchups between these teams since '09, including 10 in a row at home.

James Harden, Rockets overwhelm lowly Cavaliers, 114-113
    January 11, 2019
    By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden had 43 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in three quarters to lead the Houston Rockets to a 141-113 rout of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night.

After the Cavaliers won the first meeting with Houston this season, the Rockets were determined to take care of business this time. They did that, racing to a 28-point lead after scoring a season-high 77 points in the first half behind 24 points from Harden. The Rockets led 113-81 after three quarters.

Harden had his 15th straight game with at least 30 points, his franchise-record 13th game with 40 points this season and the seventh in the last nine games.

Harden needed less than 2 1/2 quarters to reach 30 points, hitting a 3 with 7:41 left in the third to give him 32 points and push Houston's lead 91-58. He joins Kobe Bryant (16 games in 2003) as the only players to score 30 points in at least 15 games in a row since the 1972-73 season.

About three minutes later, he pushed his total to 40 after he was left wide open to drive into the lane for an easy layup to make it 99-68. Harden grabbed his 10th rebound with about 90 seconds left in the third quarter to give him his sixth triple-double this season and the 41st of his career. He made eight 3-pointers to extend his NBA-record to 12 games in a row with at least five.

Ante Zizic led Cleveland with 18 points. They have lost 12 straight.

    WARRIORS 146, BULLS 109

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Klay Thompson picked up where he left off on his record-setting night in Chicago earlier this season, making seven more 3-pointers and scoring 30 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a victory over the Bulls.

Thompson set an NBA mark in the first meeting between the teams on Oct. 29 by hitting 14 3-pointers as part of a 52-point night while playing only the first three quarters. He made three from long range in the first 70 seconds of the rematch and the rout was on in the most lopsided win of the season for Golden State.

Stephen Curry made back-to-back 3-pointers early in the third quarter to move past Jason Terry into third place all-time in made 3-pointers. He made five overall and finished with 28 points. His 2,285 career 3s trail only Reggie Miller (2,560) and Ray Allen (2,973) in NBA history.

Zach LaVine scored 29 points to lead the Bulls, who have lost six straight games.

    WIZARDS 113, BUCKS 106

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 32 points, and Tomas Satoransky had 18 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double to help Washington beat Milwaukee.

With Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined by hip and quad injuries, Washington came out aggressively and never trailed after the opening two minutes. The Wizards finished with 18 3-pointers, matching the franchise record. Khris Middleton scored 25 points for the Bucks.

    RAPTORS 122, NETS 105

TORONTO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Pascal Siakam scored 16 points and Toronto beat Brooklyn for its second seven-game home winning streak of the season.

Serge Ibaka added 14 points, OG Anunoby and Norman Powell each had 13, Delon Wright had 12 to help Toronto improve to 18-4 at home. They last lost at home Dec. 9 to Milwaukee. The Raptors have won four straight overall and six of seven. The only loss in that span was Jan. 3 at San Antonio.

Toronto has won 13 of the past 14 meetings with the Nets, including seven straight north of the border. D'Angelo Russell led Brooklyn with 24 points.

    HAWKS 123, 76ERS 121

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - John Collins hit a fadeaway jumper with 25 seconds left and Atlanta hung on when Philadelphia flopped on its final plays.

Jimmy Butler was fouled on a drive and had a chance to tie it with 2.4 seconds left. Butler, an 86 percent free-throw shooter, clanged both shots to waste the chance at the tie. Wilson Chandler slipped under the basket on the second miss and missed a gimmie tip-in at the horn.

Collins scored 25 points, and Kevin Huerter hit five 3s and led the Hawks with 29 points.

Butler led the Sixers with 30 points and Ben Simmons had 23 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds.

    MAVERICKS 119, TIMBERWOLVES 115

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Luka Doncic scored 29 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer to lead Dallas poast Minnesota, spoiling rookie coach Ryan Saunders' home debut.

Doncic also had 12 assists and eight rebounds. He scored seven of Dallas' final nine points.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 30 points and 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves in their first home game since Saunders was named interim coach. Saunders, the son of last coacg Flip Saunders, took over as coach after Tom Thibodeau was fired Sunday.

    PACERS 121, KNICKS 106

NEW YORK (AP) - Domantas Sabonis had 22 points and 15 rebounds to cap his sizzling season at Madison Square Garden, and Indiana beat New York.

Sabonis shot 9 for 14 from the field to finish 21 of 26 this season in two games in New York. He made all 12 shots and tied his career high with 30 points when the Pacers won here on Halloween.

Victor Oladipo added 19 points for the Pacers, coming off a blowout loss in Boston on Wednesday night.

Emmanuel Mudiay scored 21 points for the Knicks.

    TRAIL BLAZERS 127, HORNETS 96

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - CJ McCollum had 30 points and Damian Lillard scored 20 before resting in the fourth quarter, and the Portland Trail Blazers routed the Charlotte Hornets.

Portland has won four straight and six of seven overall. It improved to 17-7 at home, tied for best in the Western Conference.

The victory also extended the Blazers' winning streak over the Hornets in Portland to 11 straight games. Charlotte hasn't won in Portland since 2008.

Kemba Walker had 18 points for the Hornets, who fell to 5-14 on the road this season in the fourth of a five-game trip.

    JAZZ 113, LAKERS 95

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell had 33 points and a career-high nine assists, helping the Utah Jazz beat the Los Angeles Lakers.

Utah (22-21) made 15 3-pointers in its fourth win in five games. Rudy Gobert had 12 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. Joe Ingles had 14 points and a career-high 12 boards, and Derrick Favors finished with 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

The Jazz also got a solid performance from Royce O'Neale, who went 5 for 12 from 3-point range on his to a season-high 17 points.

Michael Beasley scored 17 points for the Lakers. Brandom Ingram added 15 points and Kyle Kuzma had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Los Angeles (23-20) lost for the sixth time in nine games without LeBron James in the lineup. James is out with a groin injury.

    Saturday’s 6-pack

More early over/under baseball totals for 2019:

    — Miami Dolphins want Patriots’ DC Brian Flores to be their new head coach.

    — Scottie Pippen Jr committed to play basketball at Vanderbilt next year. He is a 6-foot tall PG.

    — Astros’ 3B Alex Bregman had elbow surgery, should be ready for Opening Day.

    — Mets signed Jacob deGrom to a 1-year, $17M contract.

    — Dodgers acquired Russell Martin from Toronto for two minor leaguers.

    — If Chargers host AFC title game, NFL is looking to move the game to LA Coliseum, because of, well, you know……..money. Chargers’ home stadium holds only 26,000 people.

    Quote of the Day
“Most quarterbacks are overrated. People think they’re great if they win even if there are a lot of other factors.”
    An anonymous NFL defensive player

    Saturday’s quiz
Who did the Knicks play the last time they played in the NBA Finals?

    Friday’s quiz

Saturday’s Den: Notes on Las Vegas hotels where I’ve stayed……..

Places where I’ve stayed the most:

    — Westgate— Best sportsbook in Las Vegas, by far; on NFL Sundays they open the theater to watch all the games, with food/betting right there. Sid’s Cafe is solid dining option and they have fancier eating options also. Rooms are pretty good but not great, but this is a good place.

International Bar in front of the casino is very good, and the snack bar has superior cherry danish.

    — SouthPoint— Rooms are bigger, pretty nice. Outstanding 24-hour cafe. Also a very good sportsbook, with a hot dog stand right near it during the day and a good bar, snack bar nearby. There is a radio studio in middle of casino, where Brent Musburger has a daily radio show. Bowling alley, movie theater upstairs; away from the Strip, but a very good place.

    — Elara— Behind Planet Hollywood, Elara used to be my go-to place until Hilton bought it and doubled the room prices. Attached to Miracle Mile shops, so in summer can do just about anything you like as far as eating/shopping and never go outside. Excellent place, but out of my price range now, and their rates don’t go down Christmas week.

Places I like to stay Christmas week, when room rates are lower:

    — Vdara— No casino, but a short walk from the Aria. Great rooms, good bar by the front door, decent Market Cafe with pretty good light food (open till midnight). You can walk to Bellagio without going outside.

    — Aria— Really good sportsbook, and I changed my mind about the pizza place right near there, it is solid pizza. There is a Starbucks upstairs near the buffet. Problem is, Aria is way too nice for me. You play video poker at the bar, has to be at least $1.25 a hand, which can be expensive if you go on an extended cold streak. Just like Vdara, great rooms; their gift shop is much better, with a wider assortment of junk food available.

    — Mandalay Bay— Great room, with good layout for desk and an odd-shaped couch to relax on. Hot tub in the bathroom never hurts. Pretty good snack bar right near the sportsbook, but the book could use bigger TV screens.

    — Luxor— Room I stayed in was so spacious you could’ve played floor hockey in kitchen area; there was an excellent 24-hour deli in the casino, and the bar area was……how can I say this, full of friendly people. Sportsbook was small but good enough.

Places I’ve only stayed once or twice…….

    — Planet Hollywood— Smallish rooms, good sportsbook, excellent coffee shops (Planet Dailies); the Dueces Wild game at the machines right near Planet Dailies can be generous. Easy access to Miracle Mile shops, which are good to walk around.

    — Golden Nugget— My only downtown visit; room was kind of average, but rest of hotel was top-flight, with 24-hour coffee shop that is excellent. Pool is tremendous, sports book is small but must be great in summer to watch baseball.

Downtown Las Vegas has to be seen to be believed; lot of unique sights, just stay on the beaten path after dark. Enjoyed my ten days here.

    — Bally’s— If you go in spring or fall, Bally’s has a great pool area, trust me on this. I didn’t like the layout of their sportsbook that much, but lot of food areas close by, and it is across the street from Battista’s, one of my favorite restaurants. Didn’t spend much time in the casino while I was there, since the sportsbook is off by itself.

    — Mirage— I am almost 60 years old, but was on the young side of guests there— think it was my 4th day there before I was in an elevator without someone else using a cane or a walker.

I am told the pool there is excellent, but didn’t see it myself; I can attest to fact that The Mirage has great food options— Carnegie Deli (HUGE sandwiches, Dr Brown’s soda), a really good hamburger place and a California Pizza Kitchen. Sportsbook is also pretty good.

    — MGM— Sportsbook area is small but good; very big hotel. My walk from the elevator to my room was pretty long. Food options are solid; my room was smallish, and about 25% of the TV channels were Asian channels. Very close to the adidas outlet store, which cost me more $$$ than video poker. Nice place, just not my thing that much. Not sure the West Wing bar is there anymore, but I liked the West Wing bar.

    — SLS— The old Sahara has the smallest rooms ever; there was a mirror on the ceiling in my room, and mirrors on shower door and bathroom door, to make room look bigger. Last thing I want to see while I’m laying in bed is…….me.

Room did have a good seating area at foot of the bed; I enjoyed my stay there, but there is only a counter to place sports bets, no real sportsbook. Hamburger place was pretty good, but I’m still waiting to win one hand of video poker— got completely crushed there, to point where I’m not sure those machines ever pay out.

    — Sun Coast— Quietest casino ever; located up in Summerlin, pretty close to where Snoop Dawg lived in the reality show he was in a few years ago. Most of time there were more security guys than customers in Sun Coast. Was told they had an incident just before my stay, which is why the security was enhanced.

I remember there was group of Toronto Maple Leaf fans there gloating about a playoff win over the Bruins, only Toronto blew the lead late in game and those people wound up drowning their sorrows while I played video poker.

This place looks just like South Point, just no 24-hour coffee shop; there is a good bar near the sportsbook, and the movie theater serves Orville Redenbacher popcorn, which is important if you’re watching games in the sportsbook.

    — Excalibur— Been long time since I stayed there, am assuming it is lot different now than way back then. If you like watching guys dressed up in medieval outfits juggling or playing a bugle, this is your place. Great spot on the Strip, close to MGM, Luxor and T-Mobile Arena.

    — Rio— Stayed there one night in July 2010, but their Internet wouldn’t support posting my website stuff so I left, which is how I wound up staying at the Elara. This was during the World Series of Poker, which was great fun to walk thru for 20-30 minutes, until I realized that I didn’t come 2,300 miles to watch other people play cards.

    — Stratosphere— Never stayed there, but have to recommend the Italian restaurant downstairs in the casino, Fellini’s; really good place. Old school Italian restaurant.

Blake Griffin scores 44 points against former team
    January 12, 2019
    By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Blake Griffin scored 44 points in his return to Staples Center for the first time against his old team and the Detroit Pistons beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-104 on Saturday to snap a four-game skid.

Griffin was greeted with cheers during pregame introductions and received a standing ovation after a first-quarter video tribute from the team that drafted him first overall in 2009.

He stuck his right arm in the air and then brought his raised hands together in a thankful gesture without smiling. He clearly wanted to beat the team that stunningly traded him last January after he had signed a $171 million, five-year extension.

Griffin scored 15 points in the opening quarter when he got razzed by superfan Clipper Darrell during free throw attempts. He had 26 points in the first half to help Detroit to a 65-54 lead.

His 3-pointer to start the third and a basket by Andre Drummond pushed Detroit to a 16-point lead. Griffin had a one-hand slam reminiscent of his old Lob City days.

Andre Drummond had 20 points and 21 rebounds for the Pistons. Danilo Gallinari led the Clippers with 23 points.

    SUNS 102, NUGGETS 93

PHOENIX (AP) - Kelly Oubre Jr. matched his career high with 26 points for the second time in three games and Phoenix beat Denver, a victory for the team with the worst record in the Western Conference over the team with the best.

Oubre also tied his career best with 11 rebounds. Deandre Ayton added 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Suns. They have won two of three with Devin Booker sidelined with back spasms.

Nikola Jokic had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets. Denver fell to just a half-game ahead of Golden State for best record in the West.

    TIMBERWOLVES 110, PELICANS 106

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns had 27 points and a career-high 27 rebounds to help the Minnesota Timberwolves hold off Anthony Davis and New Orleans.

Towns swished a 3-pointer to make it 106-103 with 2:55 left, giving the Timberwolves the lead for good. Then he blocked a 3-point try by Davis on the other end, triggering a fast break that Tyus Jones finished with a layup.

Davis had 30 points and 14 rebounds for his 13th consecutive double-double. Jrue Holiday added 25 points and seven assists for the Pelicans.

    MAGIC 105, CELTICS 103

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Aaron Gordon had 28 points and 12 rebounds and Orlando held off Boston.

Jayson Tatum missed a jumper at the buzzer that would have tied it for the Celtics. They charged back from a nine-point deficit in the final 1:43 before losing to the Magic for the second time this season.

Kyrie Irving scored 25 points for the Celtics, 10 of them from the foul line in the final 4:31.

Nikola Vucevic added 16 points and 13 rebounds for Orlando.

    THUNDER 122, SPURS 112

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Dennis Schroder scored all of his 19 points in the second half to help Oklahoma City beat San Antonio.

Russell Westbrook had 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Oklahoma City. The Thunder bounced back from a 154-147 loss in double-overtime loss to the Spurs on Thursday night.

Marco Belinelli scored 24 points, and DeMar DeRozan added 18 points for the Spurs. LaMarcus Aldridge had 17 after scoring a career-high 56 points Thursday.

    HEAT 112, GRIZZLIES 108

MIAMI (AP) - Justise Winslow scored 26 points, Dwyane Wade had a huge blocked shot in the final seconds and Miami beat Memphis.

Wade blocked a potential tying layup by Shelvin Mack, then won a jump ball to help the Heat escape. Wade scored 10 points to help Miami reached the midpoint of the season at 21-20.

JaMychal Green had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies.

    JAZZ 110, BULLS 102

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 34 points, his third straight game with more than 30, to help Utah pull away from Chicago.

The Bulls trailed only 97-92 before Royce O'Neale and Joe Ingles hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 105-92 with 2:23 remaining.

Ingles, who had 16 points, then waved goodbye as he backpedaled down the court, clinching Utah's fifth win in its last six games.

Zach LaVine scored 21 points and Lauri Markkanen added 16 for the Bulls, who dropped their seventh straight.

    KINGS 104, HORNETS 97

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 22 points, Willie Cauley-Stein had his second straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Sacramento beat road-weary Charlotte.

De'Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield each scored 21 points for the Kings, who improved to 10-3 against Eastern Conference teams this season. The Hornets fell to 2-11 against teams from the West.

Kemba Walker had 31 points despite going 3 for 12 on 3-pointers for the Hornets, who have lost three straight and five of six. Charlotte is 5-15 away from home this season, and is 1-4 on a trip that ends Monday at San Antonio.

    Sunday’s 6-pack

NFL head coaching records of the Bill Belichick coaching tree:

    — Bill O’Brien 42-38
    — Al Groh 9-7
    — Nick Saban 15-17
    — Josh McDaniels 11-17
    — Eric Mangini 33-47
    — Jim Schwartz 29-51
    — Matt Patricia 6-10
    — Romeo Crennel 28-55

    Quote of the Day
“I just don’t think we’re physical enough. I think defensively, we’re not taking it personal enough when guys score on us. It should be a pride thing when somebody scores; you should be frustrated every time.”
    Ben Simmons

    Sunday’s quiz

Which two NFL teams has Bill Belichick been head coach of?
(NY Jets for one day doesn’t count)

    Saturday’s quiz
Knicks lost to San Antonio the last time they played in the NBA Finals, in 1999.

    Friday’s quiz
Kawhi Leonard played his college basketball at San Diego State.

    ****************************

    Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…..

    13) Rams 30, Dallas 22— First playoff win in 14 years; it was a happy night in Armadillo World HQ. Rams ran ball for 273 yards behind an offensive line led by 13-year vet Andrew Whitworth, who won the first playoff game of his outstanding career.

Gurley/Anderson both ran ball for 100+ yards, first RB’s/teammates to run for 100+ in the same playoff game since the 1997 Broncos (Terrell Davis/Derek Loville)

    12) Chiefs 31, Colts 13— Terrible game; Indy went 3/out on its first four drives, running dozen plays for 21 yards on a snowy day at Arrowhead, which will now host its first AFC title game in its 47-year history. Who do you think they would rather play, Chargers or Patriots?

Colts won 10 of their last 12 games after a 1-5 start; this was a rough end to a good season.

    11) Duke 80, Florida State 78
    — Zion Williamson got poked in the eye, sat out the entire second half.
    — If you’re FSU and can’t beat Duke at home with Williamson missing half the game, thats not a good omen for the rest of the season, especially March.
    — Reddish made game-winning 3-pointer; no one guarded him on the OB under.

    10) Louisville 83, North Carolina 62— Someone asked Roy Williams after this game if there was one glaring concern for his team. Williams answered, “Basketball”

    Alrighty then.

    9) Georgetown 96, Providence 90 2OT— Hoyas banked in a 3-pointer to tie game at end of regulation, then hit another 3-pointer to tie game with 0:03.4 left in OT.

Just a thought, but maybe Providence should practice fouling in last 0:10 when they’re up by three points. Very difficult loss for the Friars, and for those who had Providence, +2.

    8) Oklahoma State’s 6-10 freshman Yor Anei has only eight fingers; he lost two fingers on his right hand in an accident with a blender when he was a little kid. TV guys were saying that it doesn’t really hamper his basketball very much.

    7) Upsets of the Day:
    — Louisville (+12) 83, North Carolina 62
    — Ohio U (+11.5) 70, Ball State 52
    — Kansas State (+10) 58, Iowa State 57
    — Youngstown St (+10) 82, IUPUI 76
    — Georgia Tech (+10) 73, Syracuse 59
    — Western Carolina (+9) 94, Citadel 82
    — Troy (+7.5) 87, Georgia Southern 85

    6) Virginia 63, Clemson 43— Cavaliers won their last 12 ACC road games, and that includes a win at Duke last season.

    5) Baylor loses 6-9 sophomore Tristan Clark for the season with an injury; he was scoring 14.6 ppg, big blow for the Bears.

    4) Texas A&M 81, Alabama 80— Rough week in Tuscaloosa ends with the Aggies’ TJ Starks going length of the court and hitting a running 3-pointer at the buzzer.

    3) Detroit 93, Milwaukee 84— Titans went 10-26 in Horizon League last two years, so they hired Mike Davis, the old Indiana coach, who brought his son Antoine with him. Detroit is 5-1 in Horizon this year, and Antoine is shooting 42.1% on the arc— he had 48 points in a game earlier this month, had 32 points in this game.

    2) Gonzaga 96, San Francisco 83— Very misleading final score; this was a close game until the last TV timeout. USF has a very good team; they’re second-best team in WCC.

    1) Tennessee 78, Florida 67— Vols had lost last three visits to Gainesville, by 26-17-13 points, so this is a very solid win for them.
