According to data by the Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce, the labor strike that began on September 10 and is still ongoing today affecting the education sector, caused economic losses to 76% of the businesses in Costa Rica.
“The Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce considered since the beginning that this strike was unnecessary and even when protesting is a right, promoting chaos and paralyzing essential services is a crime. Unfortunately, the road blocks and the paralyzing of essential services did have a real impact. In average, sales decreased by 25%”, explained Yolanda Fernández, president of the Chamber of Commerce.

The biggest effects were felt by the commerce sector during the month of September, at the end of the fiscal year, month during which 9 out of 10 businesses reported losses, while 18% also had to let go of personnel.
Businesses were also forced in many cases to find ways to diminish the impact of the strike by changing schedules, changing delivery routes, working extra hours, working from home and increasing inventories, among others.
Even though the majority of the public institutions are now working normally, over half of public schools remain closed which also causes an important impact on families and their routine and economy.
