When Stations Casino bought the Palms it had a few scratching their heads questioning the purchase. Now the rumor all over town is that the Rio will be torn down so a new MLB stadium can be built on the land. The Palms is in very close proximity. Stations knew what they were doing. If the rumor holds true then the next question would be who would on the radar of possibly moving to Vegas. If not an expansion team then one would have to be suspicious of the recent move by the LA Angels to not renew their lease with Angels Stadium in Anaheim. Although it would be an unlikely move away from the LA market and one Las Vegas can’t match, but it still raises an eyebrow and fuels the Las Vegas MLB rumor even more.

It’s to the point that many in Vegas don’t accept it as a rumor anymore but rather a done deal a team is coming.

The Rio is a huge complex. Main hotel and a 2nd tower along with convention space and the high roller Palazzo suites. Shame to tear all that out.

The Gold Coast would be the closest hotel to the ballpark then. Hope it stays in business

The Tampa franchise is going to be moved there and be re-named the Vegas Ex-Rays.

I have not heard any more of this rumor for some time now.

Maybe Trends can chime in if he’s heard anything.

Most likely scenario at present - with an eye towards 2024 launch - appears to be a two team MLB expansion with Vegas and Montreal currently demonstrating the most potential investment

If so, it could also result in MLB shifting to two 16team leagues employing four divisions (NFL-style) each

Scheduling would be 18 gms vs division opponents (54); 7 each vs other 12 teams in league (84) and 24 total games vs opposite league, w rotating divisions each year again ala NFL

Two WC per league; two Bye teams, WC round 3gm series followed by 7gm DS, CS and WS

The TB Rays are in fact at risk of being sold&moved if attendance does not rise back to the levels they enjoyed from 2008-2013 when they made playoffs in four of six years. There has even been seeming serious yak yak about a "Sister City" concept wherein they play 81 games as Tampa Bay and 81 as Montreal but that is certainly absurd when truly considered

Best shot for them is that the team which won 90 games in 2018 and 96 in 2019 remains fully stocked with both the best pitching staff in American League and the Number 1 MiL system in all of pro baseball. If they can stay at 90+ wins and make playoffs in at least four years 2020-24, attendance will surge back towards the 2mil mark and a new stayjum for 2028 (current lease with Tropicana Field ends after 2027) becomes quite realistic

Better be a dome, no one is going to want to sit through three hours of a baseball game on a getaway day in 110 heat. (I lived in Tucson for 6 years and I don't by that 'it's a dry heat' nonsense!)
