After years of conservation efforts and coordinated work between the Ministry of Environment (MINAE), the park rangers of the National System of Areas of Conservation (SINAC) and the neighbors of Tortuguero, the results are not visible, the population of sea turtles and jaguars in the area has increased.

Tortuguero National Park was created in 1970 and it was one of the first areas of conservation in the country, which had the objective of protecting the nesting site of the green turtle, this has contributed to the growing stability of the ecology in the area.

“Tortuguero is sending a powerful message to the world, it is a success case of an important work by the community to preserve the biodiversity of the area they live in”, commented Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, Minister of Environment in a recent visit to the National Park.

According to Rodriguez, these efforts had contributed with an increase in the fauna of the area. This Saturday while the Minister and a park ranger were patrolling the area they were able to see four jaguars in the beach of the Park.

“This is wonderful”, exclaimed Rodríguez, after witnessing a female jaguar with its cub feeding off a turtle. “This confirms the observations of Costa Rican scientists that the population of this felines is also on the rise”.

Rodriguez emphasized that Costa Rica is the only country in the region where the population of jaguars has grown, “This is an endangered animal, for instance, in El Salvador, they have disappeared”.

“The raise in the number of turtles and the sighting of jaguars in the Tortuguero National Park are clear and great indicators that the ecosystem is restoring”, added the Minister.

The Minister also highlighted the importance this has for Costa Rica’s reputation as a country that carries out important conservation efforts and that works with the communities to generate economic opportunities and jobs through the conservation of biodiversity.
