    Tuesday’s 6-pack

Six interesting games on this week’s college football schedule:

    — Stanford (-2) @ California

    — Arizona State @ Oregon (-4.5)

    — West Virginia (-5.5) @ Oklahoma State

    — Boston College (-2) @ Florida State

    — Iowa State @ Texas (-3)

    — USC (-3.5) @ UCLA

    Quote of the Day
“I didn’t have to prove anything. I know I can play. I just had to let our team know that these guys (Patriots) are beatable. … I know those guys. I know that you be physical with them and let ’em have it and they’ll fold……Hell yeah, it’s personal. When you go cheap, you get your ass kicked.”
Titans’ RB Dion Lewis, who is from beautiful Albany, NY

    Tuesday’s quiz

in the movie Hoosiers, the climactic basketball scenes were shot in which college’s gym?

    Monday’s quiz
Jim Harbaugh was the 49ers’ coach the last time they played in the playoffs, in 2013.

    Sunday’s quiz
Jimmy Butler played his college basketball at Marquette.

    *********************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) According to people who know such things, Rams-Chiefs’ total of 63.5 Monday night in Mexico City will be the highest total in NFL history.

Of the 14 NFL games that have had totals of 58+, 11 games went over, 3 stayed under- the favorite won 13 of the 14 games SU.

Previous highest total was 62 (Rams-49ers in 2000).

    12) Before this year’s schedule was made, Rams-Chiefs both requested to play in Denver this past week, to get ready for the high altitude in Mexico City; the NFL obviously turned both teams down. Rams are practicing at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs this week, so they’ll be cold but maybe it’ll help on Monday night.

Rams by the way, appear to be playing a preseason game next summer in Hawai’i.

    11) Brook Lopez is a 7-foot center for the Milwaukee Bucks; in his last two games, Lopez is 14-25 outside the arc- he made six treys in the third quarter alone Sunday in Denver.

This is all very strange; in his first eight years in the NBA, Lopez was a combined 3-31 behind the arc, which made sense, the guy is a 7-foot center. But then he worked on his shooting.

In the last three years, here are Lopez’ 3-point numbers, in his 9th-11th years in the NBA:
    2016-17: 134-387, 34.6%
    2017-18: 112-325, 34.5%
    2018-19: 39-93, 41.9%

    10) Sounds the Baltimore Ravens will ask coach John Harbaugh to take a hike after this season; curious to see what direction they’ll go in from here. Would Harbaugh be a good fit at USC, or is former Cal coach Jeff Tedford (Aaron Rodgers’ college coach) the front runner there?

Would the Jets dump Todd Bowles and hire Harbaugh if he was available?

    9) Louisville fired football coach Bobby Petrino Sunday morning; this is the Cardinals’ first losing season since 2009, but it has been a dreadful season. Louisville lost its last seven games, is 2-8- they’re 1-8 vs spread, so they’ve been non-competitive. Petrino will get $14M to go away; the rich boosters that pay the tab for this stuff must be very impatient people.

News of the firing came during Petrino’s TV show Sunday morning and ran on a crawl on the bottom of the screen, which seems a little bit cold-hearted.

Then again, if Rick Pitino wins his legal claim with Louisville they could owe him $44M, which means the school would owe $56M to coaches…..who don’t work there anymore.

    8) First true road game for Duke’s basketball team is on the 8th……..of January. They play five games on neutral courts before then, but zero true road games.

    7) New Jersey Giants cut OL Patrick Omameh, who signed a three-year, $15M contract in the offseason; pretty big blunder, but maybe they think signing Jamon Brown off the scrap heap makes up for it, at least partially.

    6) Jimmer Fredette scored 75 points in a Chinese League game Sunday; his team lost 137-136. He was 7-10 on the arc, 17-24 inside the arc. wonder how many points his guy scored?

    5) Some good news: 48.5% of eligible voters showed up and voted last week, the highest midterm turnout in any election since 1966.

    4) Paul Pierce said on TV the other day that Duke could beat the Cleveland Cavaliers, which is an interesting debate. I would disagree with him on that, but the fact that it is even a debate is sad for Cleveland basketball fans.

    3) Florida voted down greyhound racing earlier this month; I went to the dog races couple of times in Florida, never understood why anyone would wager on them. Fun to watch, it was a decent afternoon out, but horse races are a lot more fun.

    2) Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford turns 31 in February; he is a good player, but this is his 10th year in the NFL and his career playoff record is 0-3. His regular season record is 63-71. He makes $27M a year.

My question is this; if you’re trying to make the Lions better, do you trade Stafford for draft picks and try to strengthen the rest of the team? Stafford could still bring a pretty good haul in a deal- look around, good QB’s aren’t exactly everywhere, or does Detroit commit to Stafford for the rest of his career and hope that suddenly everyone around him starts playing better?

    1) West Virginia’s basketball team has a freshman guard from Wisconsin named Jordan McCabe; when the kid was 12 years old, his dribbling skills were so advanced that he appeared with the Harlem Globetrotters one night, and also did his dribbling thing on the Ellen TV show.

Not a lot of people can say they worked for Ellen DeGeneres and Bob Huggins.

TOP 25 THIS WEEK: No. 25 Buffalo earns 1st AP ranking
    November 13, 2018
    By The Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Buffalo grabbed headlines for taking down Arizona in last year's NCAA Tournament, then going on the road to hand a ranked West Virginia team its first loss in a home opener in 15 years.

The 25th-ranked Bulls won't surprise anyone now, not with the program's first appearance in the AP Top 25 .

Buffalo's win against the Mountaineers was enough to lift the Mid-American Conference program into the final spot in Monday's latest poll. Hours later, the Bulls (3-0) won their second road game this season by beating Southern Illinois 62-53 .

''I told (the players) congrats, and I just said, listen, if you're going to sit on your phones all day and search your name and Buffalo basketball, it's a negative,''' fourth-year coach Nate Oats told The Associated Press after Monday night's win. ''We can use it for a positive and it should motivate you to play even harder to prove these voters right, that they know what they're talking about, that now more people are going to be watching us.

''So let's make sure that all these accolades we get this year, we use them as positives and they don't turn into negatives for us.''

Unlike teams that fly largely unnoticed until the wins pile up in February, Buffalo needed only a week of the regular season to make its move.

Part of that carries over from one of the biggest March moments in last year's NCAA first round: a blowout win against an Arizona team that featured No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Deandre Ayton. The Bulls lost to Kentucky in the second round to close a 27-win season, which sustained momentum from the program making its first NCAA trip in 2015 - under current Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley - and then going twice more in Oats' first three seasons.

Then, on Friday , Buffalo beat then-No. 13 West Virginia behind 43 points and 14 rebounds from CJ Massinburg.

Buffalo has a couple of notable nonconference games on the schedule in December, including consecutive road games at No. 15 Syracuse and No. 24 Marquette.

In the meantime, the Bulls don't play again until Nov. 21 against Dartmouth, though Oats figures his team can use the break. The Bulls are unbeaten despite shooting less than 40 percent through the first three games, including 26 percent from 3-point range.

Fix that, and Buffalo could be staying in the AP Top 25 a while.

''The way our shooting's gone, it may not be the worst to have nine days off,'' Oats said. ''We can regroup. ... We can kind of concentrate on making ourselves better.''

    STARTING THE WEEK

Buffalo was among four ranked teams to start the week's schedule Monday night. Second-ranked Kansas beat Vermont , No. 7 North Carolina beat Stanford and No. 12 Kansas State beat Denver .

    THE TOP MATCHUP

The headliner this week is No. 8 Villanova hosting No. 18 Michigan on Wednesday in a matchup of last year's national championship game. That one turned out to be the final stop in the Wildcats' romp through the postseason, ending with a second NCAA title in three seasons.

    DUKE ON TOP

Duke's blowout of then-No. 2 Kentucky vaulted the Blue Devils from No. 4 in the preseason to No. 1 on Monday, giving them a record number of appearances atop the AP Top 25.

Duke made the move by claiming the top spot for all 19 voters who had Kentucky as preseason No. 1 while also causing 23 voters to switch from Kansas in the preseason to Duke this week.

The Blue Devils play as the No. 1-ranked team Wednesday at home against Eastern Michigan.

    CONFERENCE WATCH

The Atlantic Coast Conference has a national-best seven ranked teams with Duke, fourth-ranked Virginia, UNC, No. 14 Florida State, Syracuse, No. 16 Virginia Tech and No. 19 Clemson. The Southeastern Conference is next with five ranked teams, led by fifth-ranked Tennessee, ninth-ranked Auburn and 10th-ranked Kentucky.

    WATCH LIST

West Virginia leads the list of teams receiving votes after falling out of the poll following the Buffalo loss, so the Mountaineers could play their way back in with a good showing in the eight-team Myrtle Beach Invitational in Conway, South Carolina.

Indiana has a game that could help its chances with Wednesday's visit from Marquette, which is ranked for the first time in five years. Archie Miller's Hoosiers also go on the road to play at Arkansas on Sunday.

    — Wisconsin @ Purdue (-4.5)

    — Northwestern (-2.5) @ Minnesota

    — Missouri (-6) @ Tennessee

    Quote of the Day
“It cancelled out the weed smell we usually get in Oakland.”
Chargers DL Corey Liuget, talking about the smoky smell in Oakland Sunday

    Wednesday’s quiz
LSU’s basketball arena is named after which former LSU great?

    Tuesday’s quiz
in the movie Hoosiers, the climactic basketball scenes were shot in Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse.

    Monday’s quiz
Jim Harbaugh was the 49ers’ coach the last time they played in the playoffs, in 2013.

    *****************

    Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

    13) Monday night’s Rams-Chiefs game was moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles, after the NFL determined the field in Mexico City wasn’t up to NFL quality. Player safety took precedence over the almighty buck, which is the way it should be.

    12) Random fact that doesn’t matter for Monday night’s game anymore; the altitude in Mexico City is 7,350 feet. Denver’s altitude is 5,280 feet, which is why the Broncos play in Mile High Stadium, at least thats what it was called before corporate sponsorship was invented.

    11) Congrats to the great Bob Melvin, who was named AL Manager of the Year Tuesday night. I watch the A’s play every night; you have no idea how great a job he did, leading the team with the lowest payroll in baseball to the playoffs this past summer. Well deserved award!!!

That said, Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash was also awesome this season, winning 90 games with a Rays’ squad that doesn’t exactly spend a lot of money either.

    10) Eli Manning’s career W-L record in regular season games is 113-110; he is the only NFL QB ever with 100+ wins and 100+ losses for the same team.

Question for Giants’ fans out there: Who do you think was a better Giant, Eli Manning or Phil Simms? I’m curious what you think- e-mail me at ffib13@gmail.com

    9) If you’re debating whether Manning is a Hall of Famer, keep in mind that Joe Namath (62-63-4) is only Hall of Fame QB with a losing record- he won only two playoff games, one Super Bowl, albeit the Super Bowl that forced the AFL/NFL merger. By way of reference, Jim Plunkett was 72-72 and also won two Super Bowls- he isn’t in the HOF.

    8) Brooklyn Nets’ star Caris LeVert hurt his foot in Minnesota Monday night; the injury was so gruesome, there were teammates in tears on the Brooklyn bench, but it turned out relatively well. LeVert dislocated his foot, won’t need surgery and could return later this season.

    7) That didn’t take long; former Browns’ coach Hue Jackson is going to join the Cincinnati Bengals‘ coaching staff immediately; his title on the Bengals’ staff is unknown right now, but he joined the team Tuesday.

Bengals have a bye this week; they play the Browns play a week from Sunday, and then again in Week 16- those games figure to be very interesting.

    6) Penny Hardaway is going to create a monster program at Memphis; not only is he a legend at Memphis he has two former NBA players (Sam Mitchell, Mike Miller) on his coaching staff, as well as another former Memphis Tiger (Tony Madlock). Memphis is a hotbed of high school talent; hard to believe Hardaway isn’t going to dominate the recruiting there.

Memphis-LSU game on SEC Network Tuesday night was great fun.

    5) Golden State Warriors have dissension? Apparently, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant got into it late in Monday night’s loss to the Clippers, and the dispute spilled over into the locker room after the game. Green was then suspended for Tuesday night’s game.

I’ve said this before, but seems like in a league where most everyone is really rich, the NBA has an awful lot of angry people. If the Warriors can’t get along, who can?

Durant wasn’t happy on the Thunder, who were a very good team; now he’s not happy on the Warriors, who are a stacked team. Maybe he can go to China and score 50 a game like Jimmer Fredette and make all the decisions- maybe he’d be happy then.

    4) Sacramento Kings beat the Spurs 104-99 Monday night, ending a 14-game losing streak against San Antonio. Kings are 8-6 and appear to be vastly improved, and they also seem to be enjoying the experience. Good for them.

    3) Le’Veon Bell didn’t report to the Steelers by 4pm Tuesday, cannot play in the NFL this season; he forfeits all of his $15M salary, hoping to clean up as a free agent this winter. We’ll see how that works out for him.

    2) Alabama is playing The Citadel in football this weekend; this is pathetic, that a team as good as Alabama is playing a I-AA team. Play a Sun Belt team, play a MAC team. Have some guts and play someone who can challenge you. This is embarrassing.

    1) Nathan Peterman’s NFL career has mercifully come to an end, after the Bills cut him. Not sure what took them so long, but Josh Allen is almost ready to play again, so Peterman was released.

Villanova beat Michigan 79-62 in national title game seven months ago; Wildcats hammered a couple of stiffs to start this season, winning by 23-33 points. Villanova starts two sophs, three seniors- they took 32 3’s, 36 2’s in their last game, vs Quinnipiac. Michigan allowed 40.5 ppg in winning its first two games, by 19 points each. Wolverines start only one senior- they made 20% of their 3’s in first two games. Last 3+ years, Big 14 teams are 28-26-1 vs spread when playing Big East teams, 15-11-1 when an underdog.

Road team won both Toledo-Wright State games last two years; Rockets won 82-78 here in 2016, lost 77-69 at home LY. Toledo won its opener 87-86 at Oakland after trailing by 14 in first half; Rockets forced only three turnovers (-10) but outscored the hosts 21-13 on foul line. Toledo starts two juniors, two seniors- they whacked a stiff in their 2nd game. WSU split its first two games, losing by 19 at Murray State in last game Saturday. Raiders start two sophs, two juniors. Last 3+ years, Horizon teams are 27-39 vs spread when playing MAC opponents.

Boston College is 2-0 but didn’t lead either game at halftime; they were +30/+5 in second half of those games. Eagles played four starters 36:00+ in Sunday’s 74-69 win over St Francis, which is a red flag- not much depth. Six of their 10 guys are frosh/sophs. IUPUI lost by 13 at Xavier (was only 37-34 at half) in its opener, before beating Eastern Illinois last game; Jaguars start two juniors, two seniors. Last 3+ years, ACC teams are 10-6 vs spread when playing a Horizon team.

Florida split couple of routs to open season; they lost by 21 at Florida State, then beat Charleston Southern by by 30- hard to tell much that way. Gators three seniors, one junior- they’ve forced turnovers on 24.4% of possessions in two games, which is good. LaSalle allowed 76 ppg in losing its first two games, losing 77-76 at home to Lafayette in its last game, a bad loss. Explorers start three sophs and a junior; they took 31 3’s, 30 2’s vs Lafayette. Last 3+ years, A-14 teams are 14-12-1 vs spread when playing SEC opponents.

Seton Hall beat a stiff by 40 in its opener; Pirates start two sophs, two juniors after going 22-12 LY and winning game in NCAA’s. Nebraska absolutely crushed couple stiffs to open their year, holding both teams under 40 points, but now that they’re playing a team that can compete with them, how do they react? Huskers start three seniors, one junior- they went 22-11 LY and made NIT. Last three years, Big 14 teams are 28-26-1 vs spread when playing Big East teams, 13-15 when favored.

Oklahoma State lost its opener by hoop in Charlotte after leading by 24 with 12:16 left, not the best way to start your season; Cowboys start two frosh, three juniors- thats a tough loss to bounce back from. Tex-San Antonio lost its opener to an NAIA team, then lost by 20 at home to Oklahoma; Roadrunners start three juniors and a senior- they’ve turned ball over 25.1% of the time so far, which is bad. Last three years, Big X teams are 9-7 vs spread when playing C-USA squads.

Crosstown rivals Houston/Rice are playing for first time in four years; Cougars won last four meetings, by 22-5-2-11 points. Rice split couple of D-I games so far this season; they lost by 16 at Penn, beat Alabama State by 14 at home. Owls start only one senior; 5 of their 10 guys are frosh. Houston beat a stiff by 47 to start the season; Cougars start three seniors- they made 15-30 on arc in the opener. Houston has three starters back from a 27-8 team; their front court is the ??? Last 3+ years, AAC teams are 10-11 vs spread when playing a C-USA opponent.

Marquette lost nine of its last 11 games vs Big 14 teams, with 7 of 9 losses by 11+ points- both wins were vs in-state Wisconsin. Eagles allowed 50.5 ppg in winning first two games this year by 25-33 points over couple stiffs. Marquette made 14-27 on arc last game; they start three juniors- their three seniors are all subs. Indiana crushed couple of stiffs to start the season; Hoosiers start two frosh and a soph. Last three years, Big 14 teams are 28-26-1 vs spread when playing Big East teams, 13-15 when favored.

Arizona won its first two games this year by 30-21 points; they’ve got lot of new guys after the recent NCAA issues. Wildcats are off to Maui Classic after this game. UTEP lost its first D-I game by 27 at New Mexico State and two starters played whole 40:00, which is a bad sign. Miners have new coach; they started two frosh, two sophs- none of their subs played 10+ minutes. Last 3+ years, Pac-12 teams are 5-5 vs spread when playing C-USA teams.

Still hard to believe Loyola IL was in Final Four LY; Ramblers split their first two games this year, losing at home at buzzer to Furman in last game, after blowing 13-point lead with 13:08 left to play. Loyola starts three starters, two seniors- they were 3-20 on arc, 15-25 on line in loss to Furman. Niagara upset rival St Bonaventure 80-72 in its opener; Purple Eagles outscored Bonnies 19-2 on foul line- they start a junior and three seniors. Last 3+ years, MAAC teams are 4-2-1 vs spread when playing MVC teams.

Northern Arizona split its first two games, beating Jacksonville, then pushing spread in 90-74 loss at South Dakota; Lumberjacks are 20-78 the last 3+ years- they don’t play any seniors, starting two sophs, two juniors. Omaha lost its opener by 26 at Minnesota, then hammered a stiff last game; start two juniors, two seniors, are picked to finish near bottom of Summit League despite having four starters back from LY’s 9-22 team. Last 3+ years, Big Sky teams are 19-19-1 vs spread when playing a Summit opponent.

Bradley won its first D-I game by 11 over SE Missouri State, in brickfest where teams combined to make 12-46 on arc; Braves have four starters back from LY, when they won 20+ games for first time in eight years- they start three juniors, one senior, are picked to finish 4th in MVC. Jacksonville State lost its first two games by 20-15 points; they lost by 15 at Penn State, in a game where PSU pulled away in last 10:00. Gamecocks start four seniors and a junior, so their 0-2 start is disappointing. Last 3+ years, OVC teams are 19-16 vs spread when playing MVC foes.

Colorado State has a new coach after lot of drama LY; Rams lost three starters from LY’s 11-21 team- they start three juniors and a senior. CSU made 12-23 on arc in 92-67 win over a stiff in their first D-I game. Montana State lost its first two games by 30-45 points to Indiana/Utah State, then beat up on an NAIA team last game; Bobcats start two juniors, two seniors- they’re picked to finish in middle of Big Sky pack. Last 3+ years, Mountain West teams are 22-23 vs spread when playing Big Sky teams.

    Thursday’s 6-pack

Odds to make the NFL playoffs this season:

    Chicago Bears -350 (75.2%)

    Carolina Panthers -260 (68.4%)

    Baltimore Ravens +200 (31.6%)

    Cincinnati Bengals +200 (31.6%)

    Dallas Cowboys +200 (31.6%)

    Atlanta Falcons +300 (23.8%)

    Quote of the Day
“Nobody ever talks about Kevin’s free agency. It doesn’t bother any of us. This is the NBA. There are guys that are either under contract or are upcoming free agents. It’s the business. We are focused on this year. I didn’t think anybody in our locker room or anyone on our coaching staff thinks twice about Kevin’s free agency this summer. That’s next summer. We are coaching this year and we are playing this year.”
    Steve Kerr

    Thursday’s quiz
Portland Trailblazers have excellent guards, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum; where did they play their college basketball?

    Wednesday’s quiz
LSU’s basketball arena is named after the late Pete Maravich.

    Tuesday’s quiz
In the movie Hoosiers, the climactic basketball scenes were shot in Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse.

    **********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

    13) Lot of college basketball games in November are awful; mismatches and teams just scheduling easy wins, but Tuesday I was highly entertained by two excellent games.

Memphis-LSU was great entertainment; Penny Hardaway will build a power with the Tigers, and LSU has a strong young team, also. Both teams played fast and played well.

Georgetown-Illinois was fun to watch; Illini PG got a concussion during the afternoon walk-thru and didn’t play, which brings up a pet peeve of mine.

    12) Some coaches are insane; they have these “walk-thrus” on game day but there are guys who turn them into practices— put it this way, you can’t get a concussion while walking. Having a practice on game day takes energy away from the game, which is all that matters. Getting your point guard hurt during a practice on game day is bleeping stupid.

Patrick Ewing’s team has upgraded its talent in his second year on the job, but they got a gift here when the other team’s point guard got hurt.

    11) Draymond Green’s one-game suspension cost him $120,000, which is pocket change to Green, but the public nature of it makes it way more significant than that. Green has been the heart of this Warrior dynasty; the most important player isn’t always the best player.

    10) Chiefs-Rams line is now 3.5, moving up from 2 or 2.5 when game was scheduled to be played in Mexico City. Total doesn’t seem to have moved, staying at 63.5, the highest NFL total ever.

    9) Michigan 73, Villanova 46— Some alum gave Villanova so much money they named their gym after him, then they had FS1 interview him during the game. Too bad he couldn’t play; Michigan avenged (somewhat) their loss to Villanova in the national title game last April.

This game was 44-17 at halftime. Wow.

    8) SEC decided to make Nashville the permanent home of its conference basketball tourney, signing a deal to keep the event in Music City thru 2035.

    7) IUPUI 76, Boston College 69— Jaguars from the Horizon League were 16-point underdogs; a 6-3 guard named Camron Justice torched the Eagles for 29 points.

    6) Magic 111, 76ers 106— Philly led by 16 early in 4th quarter, losing Jimmy Butler’s debut with the 76ers. Orlando is 7-8 and appears to be an improved team- their last winning season was seven years ago.

    5) Timberwolves 107, Pelicans 100— Minnesota’s first game with Saric/Covington; from this point on, their record will be measured against Philly, because of the big trade.

    4) Pistons 106, Raptors 104— Reggie Bullock scored on an out-of-bounds play at the buzzer as Dwane Casey won his return to Toronto after the Raptors fired him last spring, despite a regular season record of 320-238 (21-30 in playoffs).

    3) Radford 63, Notre Dame 60— Not as big an upset as we’d think; Radford won the Big South LY, won a play-in game, then lost to Villanova in NCAA’s. Highlanders were only a 12.5-point underdog; they’re in top 20 nationally in experience, top 50 in minutes continuity and they play a slow tempo, so they’re hard to guard.

    2) Singer Billy Idol became a US citizen this week; good to see people who are so happy when they become citizens. This country was built by immigrants, something we shouldn’t forget.

    1) NFL flexed the Steelers-Raiders game out of the Sunday night slot on December 9 (Week 14) and instead will show Rams-Bears on NBC. Should be nice and balmy in Chicago for a night game on December 9th. Do they think of the fans in Chicago who pay to go to these games?

Cal-Irvine won its last two games with Santa Clara by 18-3 points; teams didn’t play last season. Anteaters are 3-0 this season, with an impressive win at Texas A&M. Irvine starts four juniors and a senior; they’re in top 40 in country in experience, have made 41.5% of their 3’s so far this season. Santa Clara lost its home opener by 17 to Prairie View, a bad loss; Broncos start three seniors, which makes it worse. Last three years, Big West teams are 31-28 vs spread when facing a WCC opponent.

Gonzaga scored 112 ppg in winning its first two games, against a couple stiffs; they move up in class here, vs Texas A&M squad that made only 21.2% of its 3’s in splitting its first two games, losing at home to Cal-Irvine after Aggies led by 14 early in second half. Aggies start three sophs, two seniors- they lost 3 starters from LY’s 22-13 team that made Sweet 16. Gonzaga is missing one of its best players, 6-10 PF Tillie; they’ve got three starters back from 32-5 team that also made Sweet 16. Zags are off to the Maui Classic after this game.

    Charleston tournament
Virginia Tech has four starters back from a 21-12 team that made NCAAs LY; Hokies start three seniors, one junior- they haven’t done much yey, beating a stiff by 28 in their only game. Ball State split its first two games, beating Indiana State, losing by 9 at Purdue when Cardinals made 11-23 on arc to cover spread; Ball has four starters back from a 19-13 team team that went 10-8 in MAC. Cardinals are a top 75 nationally in experience. Last three years, MAC teams are 10-3 vs spread when playing an ACC opponent.

Alabama has three starters back from 20-16 team that won a game in NCAAs LY but they’re still young, starting a frosh, three sophs; Crimson Tide won their first two games, getting to line 43 times (26-43) in 81-73 home win over Appalachian St Sunday. Northeastern lost finals of CAA tournament here LY; Huskies have all five starters back from that 23-10 team. Northeastern split their first two games this year, losing by 3 to Boston U, then winning by 10 at Harvard. Last three years, SEC teams are 5-3 vs spread when playing an SEC opponent.

Wichita State split its first two games, winning by 3 at Providence after losing home opener to Louisiana Tech; Shockers lost four starters from LY’s 25-8 team that got upset in first round of NCAAs- they’re starting two freshman this season. Davidson has to replace a 2,000-point scorer who graduated LY; Wildcats have three starters back from a 21-12 team, are picked to finish near top of the A-14. Davidson scored 81 ppg in winning its first two games, but 79-76 win vs Dartmouth was bit of a red flag. Of Wildcats’ top 10 guys, only one sub in a senior.

    Myrtle Beach tournament
Wake Forest has 7 new guys this year; 5 underclassmen left after LY, an 11-20 disaster (4-14 in ACC). Deacons were 26-33 on line in their opener, a 90-78 win over a stiff. Wake is starting two frosh, two sophs; they’re in bottom 20 in country in experience. St Joe’s won its first two games, beating Old Dominion/Monmouth by 15 points each. Hawks have 3 starters back from 16-16 team that won 7 of its last 9 games. St Joe’s is starting three sophs and a frosh, are picked to finish 4th in A-14. ACC teams are 26-13-1 vs spread in their last 40 games vs A-14 teams.

Long trip east for Cal State-Fullerton squad that lost in double OT at Arizona State in its only D-I game so far; Titans made NCAAs LY, are top 30 experience team- they start three juniors, one senior, with four starters back from LY. Central Florida lost 80-79 at home to FAU in its last game Sunday, blowing an early 20-point lead. Knights start two juniors, two seniors;, are a top 40 experience team they’ve got three starters back from 19-13 team that went 9-9 in AAC. Last three years, AAC teams covered two of three games against Big West teams.

Western Kentucky has recruited well but is young, starting a frosh, three sophs; Hilltoppers split their first two games, losing by 18 at Washington (WKU led by 9 at half). WKU has two starters back from a 27-11 team that lost in NIT semifinals. Valparaiso missed postseason LY for first time in 8 years; Crusaders were 3-6 in games decided by 6 or fewer points- Valpo has three starters back this year, but still has only one senior- they whacked a stiff in their opener, which tells us nothing. Last three years, C-USA teams are 12-5 vs spread vs MVC opponents.

2K Classic, Madison Square Garden, NYC
Syracuse won its first two games by 32-14 points, allowing 52 ppg; Orange has all five starters back from a 23-14 team that lost in Elite 8 LY. Syracuse beat UConn two of last three years, as old Big East rivals continue their series. Only one of eight guys Orange played in last game is a senior, but playing UConn here is a big step up in competition. Huskies won first two games of Dan Hurley era by 10-28 points; UConn has three starters back from 14-18 team that cost Kevin Ollie has job. Last three years, ACC teams are 12-8 vs spread when playing an AAC opponent.

Oregon allowed 52 ppg in also beating couple of stiffs to start season; Ducks lost three starters from a 23-13 team that was in NIT- they’re starting two seniors and made 14-32 on arc in first two games- their best player might be 7-2 freshman Bol. Last three years, Pac-12 team are 6-5 vs spread when playing a Big 14 team.

No. 16 Virginia Tech, No. 23 Purdue lead Charleston Classic
    November 15, 2018
    By The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) No. 16 Virginia Tech and No. 23 Purdue will get their strongest tests of the early season when they play in the Charleston Classic this weekend.

The eight-team field features five teams that played in the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

The Hokies (1-0) of the Atlantic Coast Conference open play Thursday against Ball State (1-1). The Boilermakers (2-0) of the Big Ten Conference begin action later in the day against Appalachian State (1-1).

Other games in the first round include Alabama (2-0) of the Southeastern Conference against Northeastern (1-1) and Wichita State (1-1) against Davidson (2-0).

Virginia Tech is expected to continue to be without suspended senior forward Chris Clarke. He was suspended indefinitely by the school last month.

Purdue leans heavily on Carsen Edwards, the junior guard who was first-team All-Big Ten selection a season ago. He's picked up where he left off this season as he's scored 30 and 23 points in the Boilermakers' two victories.
