State police arrested a New Jersey woman after they reportedly uncovered 44 dead dogs in her home and 130 others living in "deplorable" conditions on her property.

Investigators were inspecting the Shamong Township home of Donna Roberts, 65, Tuesday when they said they made the gruesome discovery.

Detectives found "evidence of animal cruelty inflicted upon various breeds of dogs on the property," New Jersey State Police wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday. "The odor of animal feces and ammonia permeated the inside of the residence, which caused several of the responders to experience dizziness and nausea."

Police found dead dogs "packaged in plastic bags and stored in freezers throughout" Roberts' property, New Jersey State Police Col. Patrick Callahan said.

Four of the living dogs were found to be in critical condition and were transported to an emergency clinic.

"Although the circumstances surrounding the demise of the 44 dogs that were discovered inside plastic bags in freezers remain under investigation, the deplorable and inhumane living conditions the rescued dogs were forced to endure is tragic," Callahan said. "Troopers take an oath to protect and safeguard life, including the lives and well-being of pets, which can be vulnerable to abuse."

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said his office is "appalled by the horrendous conditions these dogs were subjected to."

The prosecutor charged Roberts with animal cruelty. She is out of jail as she waits for a court date, police said.

I wondered the same. I mean, animals are animals. Humans are people.

Animal in 99% of situations. Obviously really close friends, family and little kids I would save first. Other than that....if I could the animals. Though they might be harder to save as they panic and bite, claw or run away.

I get it...I love my dog. But come on...you're saving a pet over a person 99 percent of the time. That's actually more sick then what this lady was doing...and she is sick.

Let's argue and abase those who disagree about scenarios that have a .0002% chance of happening. Fun.

Something is out of whack in today's society......all this political correctness, people putting animals above humans is insane.

I like dogs, horses, etc.....but I'm not gonna put them above a human being. We humans eat animals, where do you think ground beef & steak comes from.......well most do, some are vegetarians.

If you ever get hungry enough like the people in Venezuela, you won't think twice about eating all kinds of animals, that's what they're doing down there right now.

Like I said, dogs can be a mans best friend, & we humans do get attached to them because they give us loyalty & obedience, but don't lose your mind over what's right & wrong when trying to pick between human or animal......

Now this lady in this story above is one crazy & sick individual......absolutely no reason to be in that situation.

So this lady is right around the corner from my office. A coworker lives in the neighborhood. He told me this has been going on for a long time. Everyone in the area knew of her and reported it countless times. No idea why it took so long. He told me the smell would carry blocks away and the smell would shift with the wind.

I know its a mental health issue but god damn!

The police that initially went couldnt be inside more than a few minutes at a time bc of the smell. Ammonia
