A report by the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) shows that the Tourism Industry contributes a 6.3% to the country’s GDP.
“To put into perspective the size of the tourism industry in the country, it can be compared to other economic activities. In this way, for example, the IT industry represented a 2.2% of the GDP, the production of electricity contributed a 2.1%, the manufacturing of medical devices contributes 1.8% and a traditional activity such as the production of banana represents 1.1% of the GDP”, explains the press release.
The number went from a 4.4% in 2012 to a 6.3% in 2016.

This statistic also allows the comparison on an international level. The tourism industry in Mexico represented 8.7% of the GDP, in Canada this number is of 1.9% and in Colombia its of 1.8%.
Within the industry, lodging services are the biggest contributors, followed by food and beverage services, ground transportation and medical services.
The study concludes that the tourism industry employs over 211 thousand work
