“It would be wrong of me to be concerned of my popularity when Costa Rica is living such a complex context, I am here to resolve the problems that Costa Rica has, and that’s what I’m doing”.
With those words, the President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado referred to the results of a recent survey carried out by the Center for Political Studies and Investigation of the University of Costa Rica (CIEP-UCR) which indicate that 52% of Costa Ricans see as negative the work of the president.
“I have the conviction that we will get past this difficult situation in a positive way and that with the bases of our economy firm the country will advance. This is what I am determined in doing”, continued Alvarado.
The President has maintained in the past days’ conversations with the different congress parties and independent deputies, but is still awaiting the resolution of the Constitutional Chamber which will directly influence the legislative procedure.
The fiscal plan still requires approval on second debate in Congress. “It will mean a great relief for our economy and we would take on a month of December with a lot more calmness for everyone”.
Alvarado also mentioned that this was the right time to be brave “not just in the country, but in the region and the entire planet”, referring to the reactions of the Venezuelan and Nicaraguan Governments to his speech regarding respect of human rights and freedom of speech.
Finally the president also talked about the tragic rafting accident where 4 tourists and 1 Costa Rican tour guide died back in October 20.
“As a country we are hurt, we are full of concern and anger for what happened”, he assured, and continued “from the Executive branch we are working on responding o this situation, through the Ministry of Security and in coordination with the Costa Rican Tourism Board and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We must understand that establishing responsibilities is the job of the Judiciary Branch. We will be alongside the victims to facilitate the process and help clarify what happened”, he concluded.
