Over 10,000 local operations have been recorded in the six months following the inauguration of the San Jose Domestic Terminal, representing a total of 50,000 passengers arriving and departing from the terminal between May 14 to October 31 of this year.
Starting in early November, the supply of regular local flights was strengthened by the launch of Costa Rica Green Airways, a Costa Rican-owned airline that is flying to Tambor, Puntarenas.
“Ever since we began this work, our conviction has been to provide a more responsive service with airline operations in a modern, comfortable and secure space. The arrival of a new airline reconfirms the commitment AERIS has to Costa Rica in terms of improving the relationship with our users and serving operators with airport infrastructure that the country deserves. Furthermore, it is a signal of trust and the opportunity that exists to increase a service that stimulates the economy and promotes visits to different parts of the country”, said Rafael Mencía, Executive Director of AERIS Costa Rica.
Growing domestic traffic at Juan Santamaría International Airport fits perfectly with the efforts made by the government to improve the quality of the tourist experience, as well as well-being and productive linkages throughout the country’s territories.
“We are delighted by the news that a new airline will be serving the country’s domestic transportation needs. With domestic and international tourism on the rise, Costa Rica needs more actors to transport tourists from one region to another, which will broaden the benefits that our tourist industry can provide”, said Maria Amalia Revelo, Minister of Tourism.

Costa Rica Green Airways operates three flights in each direction with a fleet made up exclusively of twin-engine aircraft that specialize in taking off and landing on short runways, noted Everardo Carmona, the company’s CEO.
“Our first destination will be Tambor, with three flights per day and prices starting at $98. We will soon offer additional destinations, beginning with Quepos and Nosara, with expansions to the rest of the country following suit. We will also be expanding our fleet and offering charter flights”, he added.
The airline has been planning its launch for over two years as a sister company to Carmonair Charter. It recently received the Air Operator Certificate (COA), which grants it official status and allows it to run regular flights.
Connectivity is a key factor for the development of communities. It opens up enormous commercial and tourism opportunities: the more choice travelers have, the more they will be attracted to the country. There is no doubt that this new and modern Domestic Terminal will show results in the very near term, with local airlines such as Costa Rica Green Airways and a greater influx of tourists, including domestic and international travelers”, said Guillermo Hoppe, Director-General of Civil Aviation.
The SJO Domestic Terminal can move over 200,000 passengers per year on regular and private flights, which represents a total of around 20,000 operations.
An increase of scheduled domestic air traffic operations is expected in 2019, with a further flight from Skyway coming in December, and TAC Airlines beginning operations next year.
