Security Finds Abandoned Suitcase with $1.3 Million in Cocaine at NYC Airport

Security officials working at a New York City airport discovered an unclaimed piece of luggage that contained an estimated $1.3 million worth of cocaine inside.

According to the New York Daily News, United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents working at John F. Kennedy International Airport found the suitcase on November 21 after it went unclaimed following a flight from Quito, Ecuador, to New York City.

Officers discovered 38 bricks of cocaine inside the bag totaling over 100 pounds, which police said had a street value of around $1.3 million. Authorities are trying to find the passenger who placed the luggage on the international flight.

While Colombia and Peru are the world's two largest cocaine producers, Ecuador can be found between the nations, making it a popular location to transport the drugs to the U.S., where around 33 percent of the world’s cocaine is consumed.

A report from the White House released in 2017 revealed Ecuador was ranked No. 2 on the list of South American countries with the most-seized cocaine.

Just think, if you were a petty thief ( and there has been plenty of reports of Stealing suitcases from Airports )

You walk over and grab the suitcase , thinking you just scored a bag of clothes, maybe a designer handbag, something of value

get home and open it and find that !!

Probably was over 50 pounds and didn't want to pay the extra fee for overweight bag.

yeah but they usually get you when you check it in, not when picking it up

plus since it was a 100lbs of coke, yeah they already paid for the extra weight

you would think if the bag was that heavy it would have been flagged before nobody claimed it....

Wouldn't the camera see you, but they would have never known what was inside

yeah but they do it all the time.
guys would stand by the baggage claim waiting like they just got off that plane. could even have an old ticket, maybe picked it out of the garbage or off the floor
anyway they just stand there to grab a bag or two.
there's nobody checking to see if they are your bags or not

I remember back in the day they had a guy checking before you left the area. those days are over at a lot of airports

Me and my wife were talking about that just last week when landing in Vegas. It's an honor system, and the Vegas baggage claim can be a cluster F

and like I said it happens a lot. you just don't hear about much. but in a local paper that I get once in a while I have read some stories about it when they catch them

one story was about a whole family that goes around and will walk out with 6-8 bags. they finally caught them leaving LGA with 8 bags
of course they weren't on the flight or ANY flight. they just walk in go to the baggage claim area and walk out with bags.

I have a few friends who work at customs there. They were dying laughing about this suitcase & told me about it before it came out in the news. Their biggest issue of laughter was the authorities expecting someone dumb enough to come forward & claim it.

Troy, Troy, Troy. Vigilant? The suitcase made it all the way and went unclaimed and only then was the blow discovered. Not something you should be bragging about

could one claim just the suitcase, as it looks decent, but tell
the authorities that the coke wasn't theirs?
