BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield said Wednesday that he has no regrets about calling former coach Hue Jackson "fake," and he snapped back at those who questioned his maturity.

"People get maturity confused with me being 100 percent comfortable in my own skin," Mayfield said. "So that's absolutely how I am. I've always been that way. It's not immature. It's me being exactly who I am every day, being that same guy for our team, and I think that's very important right now."

Mayfield acknowledged that he referred to Jackson as "fake," but he declined to explain why.

"There were just things that happened inside the building that I'm not going to get into detail with," Mayfield said Wednesday. "It's in-house information."

Jackson has not been available to the media since Mayfield said Sunday that he took it personally that Jackson had joined the Cincinnati Bengals' coaching staff after being fired by the Browns. Cleveland defeated Cincinnati 35-20 on Sunday.

After ESPN's Damien Woody criticized Mayfield on First Take, Mayfield shot back with a comment on First Take's Instagram post.

Baker Mayfield acknowledged that he understands it's tough to put the word "fake" in the public realm without elaborating, but he still declined to say more.

"I get it," he said, "but I don't have to go into details. That's how it works."

Mayfield said he's going to state his opinion, that he always has, and that nobody should be surprised when he does.

"People took it as me personally attacking Hue," he said. "That's not it. It's the fact that I get to have my own opinion on how [the move to Cincinnati] transpired, and he gets to do what he wants. That's how it is.

"Although I'm an athlete, I'm not a cookie-cutter quarterback. Never have been, never will be. I speak my mind. That's how I am. I didn't like the move and people don't have to care.

"I'm not looking for anybody's approval. I don't regret any of it."

Interim coach Gregg Williams would only say that the Bengals game was over and "we are on to the Texans," referring to the Browns' next opponent.

Mayfield has played extremely well since Jackson was fired, completing 74 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns, one interception and a rating of 129.5. The Browns have won two of three games since Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley were fired.

The team's most impressive win came in Cincinnati, where the Browns built a 28-0 lead in the first half. After the game, Jackson went to greet Mayfield, who gave his former coach a quick -- some called it abrupt -- handshake. Mayfield then said after the game that he did not appreciate Jackson joining a rival, which led to criticism from analysts.

Mayfield especially bristled at Woody comparing Jackson joining the Bengals with Mayfield transferring to Oklahoma from Texas Tech. That led Mayfield to answer via social media.

He did not deny his actions are calculated to galvanize his team.

"I do everything with a purpose," Mayfield said. "So when somebody comments on my story when they really don't know anything about it, I get to voice my opinion just like he's on a talk show voicing his. So like I said, I'm entitled to that and there's certain things about me being myself which, yeah, I think helps this team.

"But in no way am I trying to create a distraction. And I think everybody in this locker room knows that. I think people on the outside can say what they want. Inside this locker room we have each other."

Mayfield said his brother's post was "protective."

"That's what you want family for," he said. "I expect some of these guys in this locker room to go to war with me too. That's just how it is."

Mayfield said he does not feel that Jackson was holding him back and that his improved recent play is not because Jackson was fired.

"I mean, obviously the easiest answer is to look on that and say, 'Yeah, I've played a lot better since then,'" he said. "But that's not it. It's just been about me doing my job at a high level. It's not about that [the firings]."

He dismissed comparisons to other NFL quarterbacks -- Drew Brees and Peyton Manning were mentioned specifically -- who are not as blunt.

"Yeah, quarterback is a little different from some of the guys to have a voice, but that's just how I've always been," Mayfield said. "I'm not going to change for anybody."

"If you look at Baker's body of work since he's been here, I think he's shown that he's a confident, sometimes cocky player," guard Joel Bitonio said. "But you need to be that to be a quarterback in this league. People go about it differently. And he plays the game the right way. He works the right way. He does things the right way. And I'm happy he's our quarterback."

Asked about the "fake" comment, Bitonio demurred, saying, "You guys can ask Baker about those things."

"I have an opinion; I'm entitled to that," Mayfield said. "But the most important thing is me doing my job, and I can manage both."

His mindset is that Hue left Oklahoma to go to Oklahoma St, that's a pretty immature way to look at it. It's the NFL, coaches switch jobs all the time. It's stupid for him to speak out against Hue because there's no guarantee that Mayfield will always play for the Browns and Hue could someday be on the coaching staff of a different team Baker plays for, how awkward would that be. It's like Jalen Ramsey running his mouth calling all these QB's trash and garbage, someday those guys could be your teammate idiot, keep your mouth shut and let your play do the talking.

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens has Baker Mayfield's back.
In a big way.
Kitchens said Thursday he has no problem with any of Mayfield's recent statements about former coach Hue Jackson, including an Instagram response when Mayfield called Jackson "fake."
"I promise you this: Baker's not going to blow smoke up anybody's ass," Kitchens said Thursday as the Browns prepared to face the Texans in Houston on Sunday. "So if he said it, that's what he feels. And I'm standing behind Baker Mayfield."
Mayfield did not detail what he meant except to say there were things that happened in the building that led him to use the word.
Kitchens was just as adamant about Mayfield's postgame comments in Cincinnati when Mayfield said he did not appreciate his former coach taking a job with a rival so soon after being fired by Cleveland.
"I don't have a problem with Baker saying anything like that," Kitchens said. "The guy spoke what he felt to be true. I don't know when it became big news to speak the truth, OK? And if that's what he feels then he should voice it.
"Hard Knocks is in here and everybody is looking for a story. Well, he's giving you a story. He's telling you the truth. Everybody wants an inside look and the truth. Well hell, that's the truth.
"We go down to Cincinnati and one of the biggest wins ... I know there's people in that locker room that have never gotten on a plane to come back here on a road game with a victory. So they didn't know that feeling until then.
"Suddenly it's big news if we don't want to turn it into a Kumbaya after the game and turn it into fist bumps and hugs. I don't think Baker disrespected anybody in what he said. He spoke what he felt."
Kitchens said he can see the Browns coming together, and that words are irrelevant.
"At some point, everybody's going to realize it doesn't matter what anybody else says," Kitchens said. "It doesn't matter what anybody says in Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, nowhere. It's about what's said in here. And more importantly it's about our fans, our organization and our locker room most important.
"It's about what those guys in there feel, and when they start believing that, which they do, then you have something."
Mayfield's teammates did not want to be drawn into a discussion about Mayfield's words. To Kitchens, it's fundamental.
<article></article>"Ultimately it's about winning," Kitchens said. "When you start winning people want to find other stories. I've told you guys this in the spring: Players chase stats and media chases controversy, because both of them equal money. It's about how many hits you get on the internet; it's about how many viewers you have.
"Ultimately if we can stay together in the locker room or not let anything like (stats) divide us or any Instagrams or anything like that divide us, we're going to be fine."
Kitchens also said that he told running back Nick Chubb he could call the plays in Houston if Georgia beats Alabama in the SEC championship game. Chubb played at Georgia, Kitchens at Alabama, and Wednesday Chubb told the NFL Network about the fun arrangement.
"That's because he (Kitchens) has no belief we'll win," Chubb said.
"I changed a play today to Roll Tide; he wouldn't even run the play, so I don't know," Kitchens said of Chubb. "I had to come up with something; he wouldn't even bet me anything."

Hue Jackson was fired, he didn't leave on his own. What's wrong with him accepting another job when he was out of work. Didn't Mayfield bale on Texas Tech to go to Oklahoma?

After watching the Browns on Hard Knocks this season, Hue was not a leader and was a poor judge of talent, especiallyat QB- tyrod vs mayfield decision, come on!!!. He was a real arragant prick in those coach meetings. Glad he was fired.

Didn't say anything wrong, just weird how this shit gets so much play. The media pushing buttons, because they're incompetent and lazy, and they know somebody will be offended and another non story will have legs
