Two members of the Public Police Force suspected of bribing two Canadian tourists were arrested by the Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ) in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste.
The men of last names Gutiérrez Matarrita, 48 years old, and Diaz Cabalceta, age 31, apparently stopped the car of the Canadian tourists during a routine operation in a road control post, back November 14 in the area of Santa Ana de Belén in Carrillo, Guanacaste.

When the officers requested the tourists their passports they didn’t have them; the officers then proceeded to inform the foreigners that in Costa Rica all tourists must carry their passport, and not having it with them was grounds for an arrest.
The officers then proceeded to tell them they could reach an agreement, in order to let them go, they asked for $600.00; the tourists did not carry that cash with them, and therefore one of the suspects decided to go with the tourists to a cashier close by, where they had to withdraw the funds and handed them over to the officers.
A couple of days later the Canadian tourists commented the situation to a Costa Rican and he advised them to file the report to OIJ.
After conducting an investigation, OIJ was able to identify the officers involved, the two were arrested under charges of extortion and could face prison time of between 2 to 8 years.
