This time frame of almost a month between when the last scheduled game was played and the whistle is blown to begin the long awaited football games that will determine who the 2018 National Cham[ions of College Football will be is challenging for their coaches. The media hype alone will be distracting producing eager anticipation and anxiety for us hardcore football fans who can hardly wait not to mention how it will affect those that might want to place a wager or two on the outcome of the games. Back to the long lay-off:

One might think that this 4 week period would allow teams to heal-up (which it does) and catch their breath as they prepare for the big games ahead, a sort of, physical and mental renewal leading up to the 3rd phase of the college football season, the play-offs and all the Bowl Games. In some was it could be viewed as a welcome relief from a 13 game schedule for the players and coaches.

I am certain these are some concerns coaches have during the Month of December, here are a few:

1. Home for Christmas when players can and often do get into trouble.........a little party time with the "old gang" ad they let their guard down.

2. Girl friends trying to "re-kindle" old flames that were put on hold during the season. Rocky's trainer, quote: "girlfriends make for weak legs"

3 Accidents when traveling during this hectic time of the year (Heaven forbid) but it can happen.

4. Staying clear of the authorities, we've seen far too many incidents over the years that involve football players that had to be bailed out of jail when away from school (it can even happen while at school).

5. The "rust factor": Good coaches won't let this happen while on campus but when there is "time-off" (away from the Spartan environment) strange things can happen, perhaps a few extra brews.................to maintain body weight. (never under estimate the intelligence of college under-classman and their ability to rationalize when it comes to matters like this). LOL.

There are so many distractions in today's world but most savvy coaches know how to deal with all these distractions and potential pitfalls and they take measures to guard against them from happening.

With all this said, I would bet they still "whistle in the dark" (and the day light) until their flock is back in the fold.....safe and sound..............They know all too well how 19 to 21 year old minds think and operate.

Be assured that Las Vegas keeps a close watch on all this as well.

Several players (10 so far) opted out of playing in their teams bowl games (none are on the rosters of the four play-off teams). Apparently coaches have no control over these decisions. ?
