Using the slogan “taking care of one another is in our nature”, the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) launched a new tourist safety campaign on Wednesday, to coincide with Costa Rica’s main tourist period, with high numbers of visitors from abroad as well as local tourists.
The publicity components were shown in the opening ceremonies of the XX Tourism Safety Congress, an event held by the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) and ICT.
The first phase will be underway through December 22nd.
Maria Amalia Revelo, the Minister of Tourism, noted that “this campaign is the result of joint efforts that we have been bringing forward with various public institutions to strengthen tourist safety by calling for people to take care of one another as well as those who come to visit us”.
“A sustainable destination must also be a safe destination”, Revelo emphasized.

In addition, training events with local and international experts were held on Wednesday for over 700 business leaders from the tourism sector.
While taking part in the opening ceremonies of the Congress, the Minister of Public Safety, Michael Soto, highlighted the importance of training representatives of the various sectors involved in tourism activities. In addition, he stressed that the partnerships being developed between different ministries and the private sector serve to strengthen wider issues of security across the country.
ICT has led joint efforts alongside the National Committee for Tourist Safety (CONSETUR), which is comprised of the Public Safety Ministry, the Judicial Investigation Organization, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Republic and representatives from the Embassy of the United States, the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) and the Guanacaste Chamber of Tourism (CATURGA) to adopt measures to strengthen tourist safety.
Rafael Quesada, ICT’s Head of Promotions, explained that the campaign is making an appeal to the natural tendency for ticos to take care of one another, show solidarity and respect others.
The Juan Santamaría and Daniel Oduber international airports will be showing safety videos produced by the ICT’s Tourist Service, which will include messages regarding rip tides, preventive measures to take when renting a vehicle and taking care of personal belongings in public areas, including on buses.
