Starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Rivers Casino will permit sports betting, making it the first licensed sports book in Pittsburgh.

According to a press release from the casino, a ribbon cutting will be held at the top of the hour to officially open the temporary sports betting area, located next to the High Limits Area on the gaming floor.

Sports betting on Thursday will be permitted between 2 p.m. and midnight. On Friday, sports betting hours will run between noon and 10 p.m. Regular operations will begin on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 8 a.m., pending approval from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Prior to this year, Nevada was the only state to permit betting on a wide variety of sports due to a law passed by Congress in the 1980s banning it in the other 49 states. A challenge to that law by New Jersey went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the justices ruled 6-3 to overturn the betting ban in May.

Delaware became the second state to legalize sports betting on June 5; New Jersey legalized it a few days later. Pennsylvania became the seventh state to allow sports betting, with the first bet cast at the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in mid-November. Currently, sports betting is legal in eight states, with an additional 23 states moving toward legalization, according to a report by ESPN.

What ended up being the agreed upon tax/licensing fee?

I remember the first proposal was 10m/33% or something that seemed exhorbitant. But I said I had it, I'd pay it. They're gonna print.

that is a hefty tax. Wonder if will effect the odds or prices

It doesn't affect the odds on the odds boards at all, in fact, Hollywood sometimes has better numbers than books in Vegas, you just gotta be able to bet them before Sunday.

There's no extra juice, or anything else people on here were freaking out about.

David Eldridge is a lifelong Steelers fan who says he has been on the team’s season ticket waiting list for nearly two decades. But when the 38-year-old was asked to place the first sports bet in Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, which opened its sportsbook Thursday, Eldridge surprised many.
That’s because Eldridge bet $11,000 on the New England Patriots to cover the 2.5 point spread against his underdog Steelers on Sunday.
“Over the last 15 years, I’ve gotten burned too many times,” Eldridge told The Action Network. “I just hope it’s not one of the three games a year they show up for.”

Eldridge said he has gone to many Steelers games over the years, including Super Bowl XL (2006), XLIII (2009) and XLV (2011), but has dialed back in recent years due to worrying about his fantasy teams and the appeal of the Red Zone channel.
Plus, his relationship with the Steelers is one of love-hate.
“Put it this way: If I managed my companies the way Mike Tomlin coaches this team, I wouldn’t have $11,000 to put down on this type of bet.”

One of Eldridge’s companies is cellhelmet, a cell phone protector that guarantees the phone won’t crack. He invested in it after he saw it on “Shark Tank.”
Eldridge said he will be at one of his company’s holiday parties during the game on Sunday, but he will be rooting for his money and not the Steelers.
“I’ll root quietly,” Eldridge said. “I mean it’s the Patriots, the team I most despise.”
Eldridge is good at the poker face because he’s good at poker. He’s a VIP of the casino because of his frequency at the poker table. He has won more than $1.2 million over the years, according to various poker sites.

How confident is Eldridge on his bet, which will net $10,010 if the Patriots cover?
“I wanted to bet $20,000, but they weren’t prepared for that much,” he said.
Rush Street Interactive opened two sportsbooks in Pennsylvania on Thursday — The Rivers Casino and the Sugarhouse Casino near Philadelphia — which brings the total number of brick-and-mortar sports-books in the state to three.
Pennsylvania is one of eight states to have legal sports betting. The state began to approve betting operator licenses in October.

Went there yesterday afternoon with a couple of friends. The sports book was pretty crowded and had to wait about 20 mins to put in a wager.
They moved the Colts to 2.5 and +110 ML while I was in line so we jumped on that.

They are moving it to a bigger area of the casino in the spring which is a good thing. The wait is too long and they don't have enough people working the counter.

They added 6 more self serve terminals Last week so it was even worse before. They need to get some kinda mobile system up like in WV and jersey

went there on Tuesday and stopped back in yesterday to see the NFL lines. The terminal line was nearly back to the pretzel vendor (25ish minutes) and the teller line was nearly to the Spiral Bar.

Since i was using winnings from Tuesday game (they had OSU under at 56, online only had 55) to place a bet i needed to stand in the teller line and it was 31 minutes. That is ridiculous

On Tuesday I got in line to bet 1H Kentucky. It was 12:48 for a 1pm kickoff. at 12:57 I was just into the first rung of the zig-zag TSA setup and ended up putting bet in at 5dimes and getting out of the line. There was no chance I could get to teller in time to bet the game.
