The eruptions of the Turrialba Volcano the morning of this Wednesday caused the delay of almost two hours of five flights that were departing from the Juan Santamaria Airport.
The flights affected included two flights from Copa Airlines to Panama, another two from American Airlines to Florida, and the fifth flight was from Avianca with destination to Guatemala.
In addition to this, a flight from Copa that was supposed to land at the Juan Santamaria Airport had to be deflected to Liberia, Guanacaste.

The airport continued its normal operations throughout the day since, according to Aeris Holding the decision on flight delays or suspensions due to volcanic ash is the decision of each airline.
The Turrialba Volcano has maintained constant activity in the past weeks with column of ash reaching anywhere between 500 to 800 meters above the crater, close to 3,840 meters above sea level (12595.2 ft) and 4.140 meters above sea level (13579.2 ft), spitting ash over several locations in the great metropolitan area.
¨Since November 22, the Turrialba Volcano registers a continuous eruption (…) the emission of ash continues during the mornings and evenings with pulses that reach 500 meters above the crater¨, states the report of the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI).
The strong winds present this time a year also contributes with the propagation of ash.
