Courier services are commonly used by drug dealers to receive or send drugs or money, this is a very common crime in Costa Rica, and therefore, the Drug Control Police (PCD) the Ministry of Public Security, the Costa Rica Postal Service, and the National Customs Service of the Ministry of Treasury are carrying out operations to battle and prevent this type of trafficking.
¨We are aware that Costa Rica is one of the countries used by drug dealers to send money and drugs to different parts of the world as well as internally within national territory through postal packages and courier services.
The coordination between the different institutions has also included the training of key personnel of the Postal Service and Customs, as well as an important investment on high-technology scanners and the occasional collaboration of the K9 unit.
¨One of the commitments we took on when we began our work in Treasury was to battle all illicit acts. When it comes to customs controls, our personnel will continue to work along with other authorities in the country and strengthening all necessary controls in the different points of entry of merchandise to avoid situations like this to continue¨, commented Nogui Acosta, Vice-Minister of Treasury.
¨For drug dealers any wrapper to camouflage drugs is valid, anything from books, to knick-knacks, toys, make up, crafts, soap, coffee, notebooks, bottles, letters, documents (…) In addition to this, money camouflaged in boxes with baby clothes and shoes, cocaine inside frames with religious images, marijuana wrapped like a Christmas gift, are just some of what has been detected by Costa Rican authorities in past revisions¨.
