As a Navy football fan, CPJ is a legend. Many pixels have been spilled on his genius at running the option but there is nothing more painful than listening to people mischaracterize it during games. “It’s not designed to come back from large deficits.” Well, ya, neither is any offense ever designed. “It can’t score quickly.” No, it’s not a passing offense, but that doesn’t mean it can’t score “quickly”, it’s that it is designed to keep the ball and overcome athletic discrepancies, not score quickly. What many people fail to realize about CPJ’s offense (and the one he left behind at Navy) is that they actually throw the ball much more than people think. Taquon Marshall missed some time at the beginning of the year and still passed for 800+ yards with five TDs (4 interceptions but all 4 came in the first three games), averages almost 8 you, and a 128 passer rating. What can make this offense so devastating at times, is the threat of the pass.
Minny fired their DC back in November and put Joe Rossi who used to be at Rutgers. While he was DC there he beat Army twice (who sucked) but also beat Navy when they had Keenan Reynolds and finished 7-5. Rutgers held Navy to 171 yards rushing and here’s what coaches do when they stop the option: they use the same defense next time and while it’s been a few years, you can bet that Rossi is going to try to use the same defense he did vs. Navy. CPJ knows that and whenever he knows which defense is coming he comes out on top more often than not.
Minnesota may have the better defense, but as we’ve seen they’re going to be missing their best LB - that is huge vs. an option team. Let’s call the defensive side of the ball a wash. GT offense is much better than Minnesota’s and might not punt today - if they do, they’ve got one of the best in CFB. Paid -125 for the line.
