Flags, I love watching the refs take over games, you have to admire how hard they must work to perfect that skill set

I'm especially impressed by their "presence of mind" to call a borderline penalty away from the ball that had absolutely no impact on the play, that takes mad talent baby

You’re right Willie. Would love to see these same referees officiate a good honest game of horseshoe.

My dad tells me that baseball was all he ever thought about when he was growing up. I played every sport growing up but stayed with baseball even though football was my favorite sport but my mom taught high school and really discouraged me from playing because of the players she saw were beaten up so badly. Probably not a smart thing to say on a sports wagering site but that's the way it was.

I think part of the reason we like it is the same reason my mom hated it. It is a rough and tough sport and action packed. Factor in a 4 month regular season in the NFL and 3 1/2 for college and the anticipation builds up. I tried NBA fantasy once and with games every night almost, it made it hard to stay motivated. Less product, more demand.

Sum it up for me:
Shorter season, more interest. A little more than 2 games a week for 4 months. Other major sports go on for 8 months with daily games.
$, pure and simple. Network and advertising dollars flow freely
wagering and fantasy football.
The physical nature of busting heads. Something innate and hard to explain.

Only two reasons
Betting
16 game seasons mean every game has importance. And a one(only one of the 4 majors) off in the playoffs make it great. Same reason March Madness is good

Football is great for the reasons stated above, rough and tough, fewness of games making each one very important setting up seeding for home field come playoff time, the skill of the players - we can all run but we can't run like "that" or catch like "that" or throw like "that".

But the biggest reason is that there is a pause between every play, allowing the fans to define what the next play should be. The play calling is as important as the skills to execute. And we love anticipating that next play. And screaming at the TV when coaches and / or players do dumb things. They always do.

In Europe, unfortunately, love for this sport is absent, as preference is given to soccer.
