I remember back in the day when bowl games meant something. I couldn't wait
to watch the Orange, Sugar, Cotton and Rose bowl games. They meant something
and usually had strong matchups for fans to enjoy. Nowadays, we have bowls with
sorry matchups, empty seats, lack of interest by players and coaches and just plain
boring games. The average score in bowl games this year was 38-16. Twenty two
games were decided by double digits, with 14 by 20 points or more. Just too many
damn games!

My opinion and welcome yours...………………………..

Disagree. If you bet games this is great. Why do people who bet games want less opportunities? BTW....if you want to go back to the way it use to be and have no playoffs you still only have like 2-3 meaningful games. Nostalgia is a bitch

I agree with Clover, way too many bowl games. I can care less about more betting opportunities. I never have bet as few games in a bowl season as I have this year. My first plays were in the playoffs!

These games are filled with a bunch of average at best teams & you throw in people sitting out to protect themselves and the lack of showing up by many, it is a complete crap shoot to wager on them now.

Agree Clover. I remember when I grew as a fan of college football in the early 90's. Bowl games were DAMN COMPETITIVE!!! Now they just seem pretty damn meaningless to the coaches, players, & fans. Kinda sad.

The Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, & Rose Bowls were like no other.

Something needs to change, ASAP!!!

I'm sure bettors who actually play to win can find better wagering opportunities with the NBA, CBB and NHL than crap shoot bowl
games. Books love your attitude though.

My attitude of taking advantage of game I win at more often than lose? I still don't understand what you mean by games that mean something. None of them did except for two maybe three...... ever

Totally agree, number should be cut, about in half

  • 6-6 & 7-5 teams, both sides not motivated, game means nothing, proves nothing

  • kids prefer the holidays off, instead they practice for 3-4 weeks to play in the Cheeze-It Bowl against another 6-6, 7-5 team, will they tell their grandchildren they played in the Cheeze-It Bow1?

  • some locations are not attractive, kids and fans go to shitty locations, used to be exciting to go to warm beach type locations in December & January

  • no crowds for most of the games until the last dozen or so, fans do not want to travel for lower level games, it is a joke

Has anyone bothered to look at all the empty seats at these early bowl games. there are H.S programs that draw more fans on any given Friday night through out the country than half of these meaningless games scheduled with teams that have 6-6 records.

The Rose, Orange, Sugar, Cotton, yes, along with the Peach, Gator, Citrus and the Outback because of their long traditions), but even the Outback in Tampa and Citrus Bowl (Orlando Fl) and Gator bowl in Jacksonville were at about 50 % capacity (Some Outback Bowl tickets were being "scalped" at $10.00 a pair or even given away after the noon kick-off. The Peach bowl was full because of the two teams playing (Florida & Michigan).

Tradition: When college football loses that the game as we knew it is gone.

Betting: i knew a few guys years back who would bet on most anything including which of the two birds sitting on a telephone wire would shit first....... I would like to think most of our savvy Rx posters haven't reached that stage of addiction. Any of you guys remember when a discussion between two or more people would get a little heated and then some one would say, "oh yeah, you want to bet"........I do.

One thing I think could help is to do away with "tie-ins" and let the bowl committees pick the teams they want (picking order determined by payoff) and I bet we would have better matcups.

Back when there were only 28 bowls (incl cherry bowl) the power conferences needed these tie-ins ,espc sec , so the fat cats on the bowl committees wouldn't bypass them for more sexy teams. .....but nowadays with 40 plus bowl games everybody elligable gets a spot. Vandy and Indiana and Iowa states don't get left out anymore. If you got 6 wins you'll go. .....so maybe bowl committees could get better match ups than Purdue/Auburn.

Also....players sitting out. Just have a playoff system and be done with it.

How long will it be before kids start sitting out 50% of the year? Nick Bosa did it last year. Time to pay these kids and put them under contract.

I want to see Tua or someone sit out in a NC or playoff game that’s going pro

Why not? Risk of getting hurt in those games as any

You bitch and moan about it but you watch every one. Also, the ratings on these historically beat any other cable competition so it is a showcase for the talent on the field. I would actually keep it the same except I would do a group of 5 championship pitting the 2 best teams. Put it on X Mas or X mas eve and you would do ratings bonanza.

100%. I personally feel that the CFB Playoffs have been a disaster. I just cannot get into them. Almost all of the semi final games have been complete blowouts and completely boring games. The whole CFB playoff feels manufactured and forced, rather than a true playoff atmosphere. The bowls in the past did mean something and were a REWARD for a good season. Now with all the 6-6 and 7-5 teams in it, there is not really a reward for a good season but a reward for doing the bare minimum. I know I am in the minority with my next statement but I would just as assume see them go back to two teams and get rid of the playoff. The regular season is a bit more watered down now and we have the same arguments about who should be in and who shouldn't. For those that want to open the playoff from 4 teams to 8, all you will do then is assure that the programs like Alabama, Ohio State and now Clemscum always make the playoffs. For instance, if Alabama or the same power programs are on the edge, they will almost always be in the top 8. The games and "playoff" just seem anti climatic to me and just have not turned out as expected.

Yeah there seems to be too many. I think the FCS with 24 team playoff is the way to go, unless you want to go back to the old system.

I do not think so.
Kids that are NFL bound will not play 4 more games and the logistics are prohibitive for the power conference D-1 type schools. For the 4 team playoffs players will stay, think of how many NFL types would sit from Clemson, Bama, ND, Sooners if they had to play 4 games. If I was their dad or agent I would demand they sit.
The key is just eliminate 1/2 the bowls so crowds follow the teams because they are good games, of interest, no more 6-6 vs 6-6 teams.
I think an 8 team playoff is possible but 18, 24 is never, ever gonna happen, players are too banged up to go that long, NFL or not.

Agree with one issue. The playoff system has had the 2 best teams playing in the championship since it has been created. The old system was not as accurate

Exactly. The playoff system has indeed led to better title games. The undefeated or 1 loss pretender gets eliminated in the semis now. Unfortunately, most of the semis have been blowouts.

Before, under the BCS system, an undefeated or 1 loss pretender would get placed in the title game. Which was why we would see so many lopsided blowouts in the title games.

The problem with the 4 team playoff, is the best 4 teams aren't getting in every year. Sometimes, a 2 loss team is actually one of the top 4 teams, but gets left out in this format because there just aren't enough spots.

When they go to an 8 team playoff, and they will because of money, it will ensure that the best 4 teams are in. Most of the lopsided blowouts will then occur in the quarterfinal round, and we will see better semis and title games as a result.

Play the quarterfinal round on or near New Year's Day. Play the semis about 8-10 days later. The title game should be played on the Saturday before the AFC/NFC championship games.

Having the same teams make the playoffs every year is something different entirely, college football and the NFL are completely different in that regard.
