Costa Rica Closes 2018 With a 990 Kilogram Seizure of Cocaine

An operation carried out by Costa Rican authorities of the Ministry of Public Security during the last day of 2018 managed a substantial 990 kilograms Seizure of cocaine.
Authorities received the alert of a suspicious vessel in the South Pacific of Costa Rica, southwest of the Panama boarder. The Costa Rican Coast Guard Service with the assistance of the United States Coast Guard Service, air surveillance and the Drug Control Police immediately coordinated actions to intercept the vessel.

When the vessel realized they had been spotted they changed their direction and began throwing bags into the ocean, 89 nautical miles from Golfito and 137 nautical miles from Quepos, Puntarenas, the National Coast Guard Service was able to recover 50 packages; the Drug Control Police confirmed a total of 990 kilograms of cocaine.
With this seizure, the total amount of cocaine confiscated this year by all Costa Rican police bodies comes up tot a total 33 tons 580.98 kilograms of cocaine.
In Costa Rica a kilogram of cocaine has a price of approximately $8,000.00 USD, while in the United States the same quantity can sell for approximately $35,000.00 USD and in Europe for $60,000 USD, according to estimations by the Organism of Judicial Investigation (OIJ) and the Drug Control Police, which means that this year over $1 billion USD in drugs have been confiscated, a record number.
