Referee: Bill Vinovich

Saints are 8-4 with Bill Vinovich officiating when Brees is the QB for the Saints.

The Rams are 0-8 in last 12 years when he is officiating.

He does not call alot of penalties which apparently doesn't bode well for the Rams on the Road in New Orleans.

Sounds bad but whatever record is in the past two years is all that matters. And I'm guessing it isn't that bad. Unless you believe he hates the Rams for some reason it is a non issue even if all 8 were in the past two years.

Vinovich has never assessed a Rams opponent more penalty yardage than the Rams in any Rams game he's been a part of.

Just an observation and the team records are accurate from my research.

He officiated 2 Rams games this year and they lost both.

I wish there was more extensive data on refs and the key issues are, how often they call:

  • OL holding
  • defensive PI
  • defensive holding.
Those can change a game dramatically, the Super Bowl last year they did not call OL holding and it was a track meet, QBs in the pocket stood there safely.
All 4 teams this weekend are top passing squads but if there is no OL holding calls it obviously favors a passing team.
At a bar this year over a month ago, all the early games were on and a few guys were yelling out how the Pats NEVER were called for OL holding, it was true, I started to watch and it was ridiculous.
I am sure there are some that know this kind of thing... I realize it is not that simple, but there is something there.

wish they used such trends to exclude refs from the game

We need more replay options. Any play that shows a wrong call, should be reversed. Even if the whistle was blown. There should be no dead play. If there was a turnover and the guy with the ball was on his way to a score, the score should be allowed.
Refs get too much control.

Needless to say NFL ain’t changing refs over stupid shit like this. They don’t give 2 fucks what ppl think. The Jets fan outraged over Patriots stealing signal calls? He was a lawyer trying to go up against a juggernaut. FAILED!

You want to know how the ref calls things on pass plays like holding on tackles, roughing passer, grounding and his definition of fwd progress on runs. Those are his calls.
Vinovich was ref in 1st matchup of saints/rams. 6 accepted penalties combined for less than 65 yds. Road teams have been called for more penalties 8-6-2 when he was ref this season. His crew calls less than league average as you said. The only games his crew has called a lot of yds this season was giants vs wash shit show and the saints wk 17 exhibiton vs car.
