I have a question on college eligibility.

Lets say a high school senior just committed to his school in Dec 2018 (full ride).

He early enrolls to his his new school in Jan 2019 and is taking spring classes. Is that player currently still on scholarship in Jan 2019? Is this spring semester considered a red shirt or a green shirt year?

Now can this player still redshirt the upcomming 2019 college football season?

So can this player now play the 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 football season under full scholarship?

My main question is that can a player actually get a 4 year football scholarship but have 5.5 years of school paid for?

Thx

First of all, Schollys are actually on a year-by-year basis.. Schools can yank then at any time foray reason. New coaches sometimes combine and say sorry, you don't fit my system... Sad but true. Old ball Coach did this when he came back to coach S. Carolina. Dick move. Yes... Actually its possible to get a "4" year football scholarship and have 6.5 years paid for.. In rare cases, players have gotten Medical Waivers for 2 separate years. Those are rarely granted, but possible. So, if you're early enrollee and get 2 Medical wavers that would be 6.5 yrs of school.

Thx for the response!!

So if you are an early enrollee right now, is considered your "red shirt" year? Or can you red shirt in the 2019 season and play in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023?

If you are an EE right now, you are a greenshirt. But you can redshirt in the fall and save a year of eligibility. To answer your original question, that would be 5.5 years of school paid for.

Here’s a good article explaining the different shirts:
