There are some around the NFL wondering if the NFC Championship problem was not the officials’ eyes, brain or judgment, but their past or present addresses.

In actual NFL whispers that sound closer to inane commentary from the bleachers, ESPN reported Sunday there is concern around the league that four officials with Southern California ties worked the Saints-Rams game that ended in controversy and New Orleans fury.

The piece cautions that the NFL does not actually believe the game was fixed and that these Angelenos skillfully directed a close game into overtime and ensured a Rams victory. However, there are some around the league concerned with the peripherals of the refs’ backgrounds, especially because those most responsible for blowing the Nickell Robey-Coleman-Tommylee Lewis pass-interference call near the end of regulation are from or live in California.

Lead official Bill Vinovich is from Newport Beach. According to ESPN, down judge Patrick Turner — who was supposed to follow Lewis on the play — is from Lakewood. The report states side judge Gary Cavaletto, whose eyes were on Lewis as Drew Brees passed to him, lives in Santa Barbara. And back judge Todd Prukop, essentially the safety on the play, lives in Mission Viejo.

“The NFL put [itself] in a bad situation,” one officiating source told ESPN. “This is stuff that has to be taken care of prior to game. It’s just guys not thinking of what’s going on, nobody doing their checks and balances. The league is usually pretty much on top of it. This is one that slipped through the cracks.”

They missed a PI call at the end of the 4th quarter and there is ZERO dispute.

However, did they make any other "strange" calls that went in the rams favor? I do recall the rams driving in the 4th quarter at the goal line and the refs missed a CLEAR facemask call that would have given the Rams a first down.

I know these refs live in Southern California but i'm sure they are not even rams fans.

Heading into the NFC championship game:

Referee: Bill Vinovich

Saints are 8-4 with Bill Vinovich officiating when Brees is the QB for the Saints.

The Rams are 0-8 in last 12 years when he is officiating.

Vinovich had never assessed a Rams opponent more penalty yardage than the Rams in any Rams game he'd been a part of.

Oh, and:

[h=1]Rams Fan Petitions to Remove Bill Vinovich from NFC Title Game vs. Saints[/h]

Now saying he should have never been a part of the game is pretty damn funny.

As long as I don't have to Drew Brees' whiny, self-important bitch ass drone on in interviews.... I'm all good.

Then NFL media would run stories about how he saved 5 children, 3 cats and a turtle from drowning in a well.

This is hilarious. These guys grind for years, working HS and JUCO games, making $100 a game, in hopes of one day becoming a referee in the NFL and then decide to risk their dream job to help the Rams get to the Super Bowl solely because they're from Southern California. Makes sense.

Vinovich's regular-season crew -- which features two of the other three officials from Southern California -- also officiated the Rams' regular-season losses this season to the Saints and Eagles, which contributed to New Orleans earning the No. 1 seed and getting home-field advantage in last Sunday's game. In the first Los Angeles-New Orleans game this season, a 45-35 Saints victory, the crew missed a fake field goal spot, and it contributed to costing the Rams the game.

It makes sense when you show them the bag

Cam Jordan, a defensive end for the Saints who's never had a problem expressing his opinion, showed that the wound from the game has hardly healed with a shirt he wore delivering his message in the Pro Bowl.

Upon the shirt it read, "Blow whistles not games," with smaller print below that read, "make calls not apologies," with a confused referee in the middle of the statement.
