Everyone calls him 2 hit whit here. Lead the league in steals batted over .300, plays about every position besides catcher and is only hoing to make 1 million this season.

Good for him. Good for any ballplayer to get that ridiculous cash.

Work 9 months a year doing nothing and get the summers off. Paid millions. Free, elite healthcare. Stay in 4-star hotels.

Less than 1000 men on the planet can perform at ML level so Doing Nothing is clearly a niche job role....Guess he's just lucky

thing everyone overlooks is that out of high school he wasn't offered any money .. after 3 years at south Carolina was drafted in rd 9 for 100k , peanuts compared to
some players that he was just as good as that got 500k and better. then all those years in minors he had to overcome every single obstacle including
outperforming players the royals org made a much laregr investment in that got the push....

what im saying is this kid and many like him deserve exactly what they are getting when the time comes

Yep. And there are less a couple dozen of the best ping pong players in the world whacking that little ball around with a paddle. The very best make over a million a year. Ping pong players should be paid millions.

Of course he's lucky.

Every professional should thank his lucky stars. DeMarcus Wiley had a famous saying about this that's pretty funny.

But I support all of them getting paid. Be young, get paid ridiculous money for doing nothing and live the dream.

Good move for both teams. He'll get paid more now and it will delay his free agency/arbitration

Whit Merrifield earned a place in Kansas City Royals history when he extended his hitting streak Wednesday to a club-record 31 games. Yes

I never even heard of this guy before being in such a small market area. Just a quick glance at his stats is impressive. Even before the 31 game streak.

High batting average , better than .290

Hits 15+ homeruns a year, excellent from the 2B position

Lots of runs driven in

Has to be an excellent baserunner since he can steal 45 bases in a season

Most likely is an excellent defensive player since he's quick, has to be no worse than average

Can play multiple positions if needed

Seems to be injury free, plays a lot of games every year

There is nothing not to like about this player. A total bargain at 4/16. Probably about the best 2B guy around, top 5 easily.

The one thing working against him is he's a tad old at 30 to get the big money, he didn't break into the majors until 27, under team control for several more years, probably not a free agent until about 34, then nobody will want to pay you big-time.

Looks like negotiation isn't his strength, he should have got better than 4/16 with his solid credentials in 3 years. Ask for say 4/30, settle at maybe 4/24, this is your big payday opportunity, if he doesn't care much about money , even better , a ballplayer that isn't greedy a refreshing concept, most want every last dollar they can get. I hope his streak continues.

Whits the face of the team here with salvy hurt. Bullpen is a dumpster fire, so they will be lucky to win 60 games. But tickets are hella cheap. Went to the game on monday 3 rows from the field right past 3rd base and paid $23

If he was a free agent now he'd easily get a 4/85 type of contract but he at least has the 16M secured and is set for life now

Great that you can go to a game and get a nice seat for $23.

As much as it sucks i expect them to flip whit next yr for prospects. Whit will be to old by the time the royals are relevant again. They will build around mondesi, keller, and maybe dozier. All their big prospects are in A ball. Attendence was like 4k at the game I went to, mind u they had lost like 7 straight at that time.

No point in keeping a guy like this if the team has no hope of being relevant anytime soon, the team is better off with prospects , the player better off elsewhere while the team rebuilds, it's tough for a small market team to compete with the big boys

A win-win for both sides

unfortunately, you are spot on here.

I wish they made some type of salary cap...as these small market teams need a perfect storm to make a world series run.

KANSAS CITY -- Whit Merrifield might not have made a big deal publicly about the franchise record he broke on Saturday night, but his teammates and others were sure not to let it go unnoticed.
When Merrifield took the field to begin Saturday’s game against the Cardinals, he was playing in his 422nd consecutive game, setting a new Royals record after tying Alcides Escobar on Friday night.
“To play 422 games in a row is insane,” shortstop Nicky Lopez said. “A lot of people take it for granted. But when you look at it and break it down, it’s like, ‘Wow.’”

Thanks for the update...didn't realize Kansas City still had a team. Glad we got the Nicky Lopez perspective in the note.
