...once it got there. I assumed the early bettors were looking to get the Rams at 3 and possibly middle.

I'm not sure how telling it is. None of these are key numbers. It's just appears the Rams bettors that were hoping for a 3 basically came to the conclusion it wasn't going to get there and put their bets in.

Why would you go to 3 and potentially have a ton of money that ends up with a push?

Well, if it was predominately Patriots money coming in, then you're putting yourself in a vulnerable position. I can only assume that is wasn't that one sided. If the Pats win by 3, it wouldn't be like you did any damage to yourself and if they won by more you get the Pats money covered. The push isn't going to hurt the books if the Pats money was that one sided (the result would simply be the same). Most books I know, don't want to take a side if they can prevent it.
